Designed by ~Sapphire~ Intro
There are legends that haunt the Tribe of Pine Shadows, of a creature that snatches and eats those who wander out too far from the shelter of the Tribe. A reckless young she-cat will soon face the source of this legend as she ventures beyond everything she's ever known and goes on a journey that may very well end in her early demise. Accompanied by two vastly different companions, will she find out the truth, or die trying?
This story includes horror, slightly graphic violence, and death

Theme
An Old Man's Winter Night
All out of doors looked darkly in at him Through the thin frost, almost in separate stars, That gathers on the pane in empty rooms.
What kept his eyes from giving back the gaze Was the lamp tilted near them in his hand.
What kept him from remembering what it was That brought him to that creaking room was age.
He stood with barrels round him—at a loss.
And having scared the cellar under him In clomping there, he scared it once again In clomping off;—and scared the outer night, Which has its sounds, familiar, like the roar Of trees and crack of branches, common things, But nothing so like beating on a box.
A light he was to no one but himself Where now he sat, concerned with he knew what, A quiet light, and then not even that.
He consigned to the moon,—such as she was, So late-arising,—to the broken moon As better than the sun in any case For such a charge, his snow upon the roof, His icicles along the wall to keep; And slept.
The log that shifted with a jolt Once in the stove, disturbed him and he shifted, And eased his heavy breathing, but still slept.
One aged man—one man—can't fill a house, A farm, a countryside, or if he can, It's thus he does it of a winter night.

Prologue
A she-cat moved like the shadow of the snow-laden trees. The night breeze echoed the sounds, smells, and chill of ice. The moon reflected in she-cats fur as she crossed open spaces, as if she were a fragment of the light itself. Her eyes were the only feature that betrayed her existence, luminous gemstones on an otherwise invisible figure. She crept forward, finally meeting with a lurking figure in the shadows. She gazed at it curiously, everything still, trees groaning in the distance, before it finally lashed out and slit her throat. She barely had time to scream before she could no longer, dying slowly, eyes watering with tears as she gazed up at the sky as snow fell, gently covering her body until her last breath.
Chapter 1
Even the weakest of sunlight becomes piercing claws to the eyes when reflected off the snow, as Moony is well aware of in the early morning, moving quietly with the rest of the patrol which includes Rains and Owl.
Moony looks over at Owl, who, in her older years, is the most experienced Snowtrekker. The black tabby meets her gaze and flicks her ear twice, a signal for her to move ahead. Suppressing a groan, Moony creeps forward, relying more on her ears and eyes than her nose. Smells are swallowed by the snow except for the earth below and the pines above, so she strains her hearing and her eyes to track the rabbit that sits only a few tail-lengths away. Nearly invisible, it slowly edges out from its burrow.
Patience, Owl had once told her, can be the difference between a full belly and a starving kit. She takes a deep breath, focusing all her energy into her back legs, waiting for the right moment. Several breathless moments go by as her prey moves forward, alert and ready to hide in the blink of an eye. She follows just as slowly, almost holding her breath.
It seems that she's grown old by the time that the rabbit finally stops moving, and that's when she pounces, instantly killing the rabbit as she snaps its neck.
"Good," Owl meows, the sudden break in the drowning silence making her jump. Rains, barely bigger than the rabbit, nods approvingly at her. Speaking is not necessary to Snowtrekkers, for over several years they had devised a language of looks, ear flicks and tail swipes. It's a language beyond normal ticks and body language, and is absolutely crucial to being a Snowtrekker. Moony thinks it's annoying, but without a word buries her rabbit and marks it with her scent. Luckily for the Tribe, there were no other cats to compete with for prey and rarely any predators. Unfortunately, the snow-dusted forest hides something far more dreadful in the shadows...
The patrol works its way to the border, the bottom of a sheer cliff which hangs above their heads ominously. Owl confidently moves across the bare mountain, Rains following as slowly as he always does, and Moony cautiously behind. She doesn't trust the rocks the same way as her fellow Snowtrekkers; she eyes the threatening rocks which feel as if at any second they will fall and crush her skull.
After each of them has prey to carry, the patrol heads back to camp. A large group of boulders marks the entrance, a tunnel large enough for many cats to walk through, opening up into a pine grove. Each of the 13 trees marks a den, and at the height of population each would be filled, but now it's a depressing and startling reminder of the losses the Tribe has faced, as only five of the dens are now occupied and none are full.
Just as the morning patrol drops its prey off, the day patrol makes its leave: Eagle, Spine, and Jag. The only other Snowtrekker to-be, Jag, and Moony's best friend, stops and touches noses with her before hurrying to catch up to the older cats. Moony's heart squeezes; she has a big crush on the cinnamon tabby, but could never tell him.
Lightspeaker passes her by to get the very rabbit Moony caught, then waves her over. Confused, she pads over to him while feeling anxious. "Moon Light that Walks in Shadow, please share this prey with me." Moony joins him, feeling like her skin was itching as she waits for him to continue. "Tell me, how's your training going?"
Moony has no idea why Lightspeaker wants to talk with her, and is uncomfortable spending any time with him. "Fine, I guess."
"No need to be nervous," Lightspeaker mrrows with laughter.
"You're the one that suddenly called me over," Moony protests, "You're the Lightspeaker now. I realize you're still my older brother, but the other Tribe members should come first."
Lightspeaker shakes his head. "Moony, c'mon, you're very important to me. Besides, I just want to ask you how you are doing once in awhile," he replies, then leans forward, "You have to watch yourself. You have a habit of being too trusting."
"Look, I'm not a kit, I can take care of myself," Moony hisses.
Lightspeaker's eyes sharpen, a reminder of who he is. Not just an older brother, but the leader of the Tribe. "You are a kit, and you're still effected by Snow's death."
Moony stands up suddenly, tail lashing. "So what?! I'm not a kit anymore and I'd appreciate you not treating me as such." She hurries away, burning with anger. How dare he! She feels like shouting it, and doesn't look back as she heads back out of camp once more.
The still and quiet of the snow is where Moony likes to be, the chill blocked out by her thick fur, accompanied by nothing but the sounds of trees and snow. Time seems to stand still out here. A whisper of wind, gently . Ice, groaning and cracking as it moves ceaselessly. Snow that falls and covers the ground gently. Out here, she could be independent and free. Out here, she could be herself.
But something is different about the woods, Moony can feel it. It makes her fur stand on end, and a shiver of dread runs through her skin. A flock of screeching birds breaks the silence. Moony, feeling spooked, runs back to camp. Her blood runs cold as she nears the camp and hears wailing, making her heart squeeze and beat loudly in her ears.
Everyone is gathered in the center, and she fights her way through. She freezes at the scene in front of her. No, it can't be.
Eagle, torn and bloody from a battle, part of her ear is missing. Spine, with deep gouges in her hindquarters. And Jag, nowhere to be seen.
Eagle looks right in Moony's eyes as she says, "Jag is gone."
Chapter 2
"Jag... is... gone...?" Moony whispers, eyes wide in horror. How can this be? Why is this happening to her? First her mother, now her best friend. Missing, presumed dead. No body to be found. It's the legends, Moony knows.
It began before she was born, the first cat went missing. Then another. It became serious when, and as a young kit she had no memory of this, the Lightspeaker went missing and her brother Fox had to take on his duties early. Ever since, The One Who Snatches in the Shadows, also known as the Shadowsnatcher, became the name for whomever--or whatever--was causing cats to disappear without a trace. All kits had been forbidden to leave the grove, when before they had been free to roam. Moony had never taken the legends seriously... until now.
Moony ignores everyone as she shoves her way into the to-be den, surprised to see Hawk there, sobbing in Jag's empty nest. Nearly identical to her littermate, Hawk has to be more upset over Jag's disappearance than even Moony. She felt her anger cool and she pads over to Hawk, setting her tail over her back silently. Hawk's ears flicker, but she doesn't respond. The two she-cats sit in solidarity for awhile.
"Thanks," Hawk meows quietly as the sun begins to set, leaving the grove already covered in darkness. She stays in Jag's nest. Moony bobs her head down for a few moments, then exits the den.
It seems that everyone has calmed down and resumed their regular duties, if somewhat somberly. Spine is murmuring to Lightspeaker. Moony marches over to them.
"I want to find Jag. I'm going, whether or not you approve," Moony growls, interrupting their conversation. Spine reacts first, jumping up and eyes narrowing and teeth bearing angrily. Lightspeaker casually rises, meeting her gaze coolly. He's ice to Spine's fire.
"And why would I do that?" Lightspeaker hisses. Moony is no stranger to her brother's anger, and meets his eyes solidly. Spine isn't sure how to react, backing away.
Moony snaps, "Because I'm the only one willing to do anything about the missing and you know it."
"You're barely out of kithood," Spine quips with a snort. Lightspeaker's tail whips back and forth.
"How about you go jump into a pile of snow and cool down," Lightspeaker orders, ignoring Spine.
"How about you leap off a rock!" Moony snarls. Lightspeaker stops Spine with his paw as the she-cat tries to jump at Moony.
Spine yowls, "You disrespectful flee!"
Lightspeaker glares at Spine, silencing her, and turns his icy gaze back to his younger sister. "Moony, I know Jag is your friend but this isn't a job for a kit."
"I'll go whether or not you approve," Moony spits. Lightspeaker sighs.
Lightspeaker replies, "I want to put guards on you--" Moony interrupts with a shout, but Lightspeaker silences her with a glare. He continues, "Spine and Leaves. Take it or leave it. Don't make me confine you."
Moony groans. He purposefully chose the two cats in the whole Tribe who she hates almost as much as they hate her.
"Fine. I hope you know that you just killed the missing, if they were even alive," Moony hisses.
"Silence, worm," Spine growls, dragging the smaller she-cat away.
"And Moony, if you leave, know that you'll be hunted at every step," Lightspeaker meows after her.
Chapter 3
Lightspeaker takes his duties seriously, Moony knows this. She doesn't like being confronted with this fact when, as the moon rolls into the sky, she tries to sneak out but Spine and Leaves block her escape. She holds back a curse, carefully retreating. She looks back at her sleeping denmates, Hawk curled tightly in a ball in Jag's nest, while Spruce, the other Cavernguard to-be, is lying on his back. Moony makes a quick decision, stepping carefully into the back of the den so that she doesn't wake the others. The den is large, and part of it lies directly under one of the many trees scattered throughout camp, and she has an idea.
With some sniffing, Moony figures out where the tree's roots intrude into the back of the den. She scratches at the dirt, testing her theory. As she thought, the dirt is loose around one of the thicker roots cutting across the back wall. It takes her a long time, but she knocks the wall out just enough to slip through. She checks that her denmates are still sleeping, then quickly slides out through the hole. She quietly climbs the tree, her muscles well used to the action as anyone raised in the forest, and leaps onto the low-hanging outer wall of the camp.
"Hey!" Spine yowls suddenly, causing Moony to flinch. She books it, heading straight into the woods. She can hear Spine chasing her, close behind. Curse this old fleebag! Moony thinks, trying to lose the she-cat among the trees. Unfortunately, the older she-cat is smaller and quicker, easily chasing Moony down. The blazing orange she-cat leaps at her like a roaring fire, experience winning as she catches and keeps Moony down. Leaves is close behind, faster than most snow-footed Cavernguards.
"Do.... you," Leaves huffs, "have... any idea...what you're doing?"
"Yeah, I'm going to catch a killer!" Moony shouts, struggling to get up. Spine is stronger than she looks.
"You flake-headed kit," Spine growls, "we're helping you! Lightspeaker wants you to find the killer and here you are trying to escape your protective detail!"
Finally, Spine lets Moony get up. She shakes the snow off her fur. Moony looks at Spine, practically clawing her with her eyes. "What do you mean, protective detail?"
"Lightspeaker couldn't publicly let you, a to-be, go off on her own," Leaves replies, "he assigned us to you to help you find the killer. You're attempted escape nearly ruined everything."
Moony sniffs. "Yeah, whatever. Let's get started, we're wasting time."
"We'll start at daylight," Leaves corrects with a warning tone.
"You think we want to be stumbling around in the dark? That'd waste more time," Spine sneers. Moony rolls her eyes.
"Fine, we'll do it your way," Moony grumbles.

Chapter 4
Just as promised, Moony is woken at first light, just before the sun breaks over the mountain top. In the twilight, Moony, Spine, and Leaves make their way into the woods, quiet in the snow except for their breathing. It doesn't take them long to reach the edge of the Tribe's staked territory, which is marked by a break in the ground a few tail-lengths from them, and down below lies a snow field leading to more forestry.
"Do you have a plan, or are you just blindly going forth?" Leaves asks sarcastically. Moony doesn't want to admit it, but she's doing exactly that.
"I have a feeling," Moony tells the tom, looking out at the snow as it begins to sparkle in the morning sun, lifting the fog hanging over the trees. She never gets tired of the sunrise.
"You're lying," Spine mutters, grumbling something else under her breath.
"It doesn't matter. What matters is, the Shadowsnatcher wouldn't live near the edge of the mountain or near the camp," Moony says, "The only place the Shadowsnatcher could be is here in the woods beyond our territory."
"We have nothing else to go on," Leaves adds.
With that, the three of them head forward into the unknown.
The trees beyond Tribe territory look familiar, but don't feel the same. Everything feels unfriendly, threatening, haunting... Moony shivers, feeling a chill deeper than the cold. She really starts doubting her plan. What if she isn't up to the task? What if Lightspeaker, no, her brother, was right and she is still a kit? What if she can't find the killer, or worse, gets herself killed?
"What're you thinking about?" Leaves asks her, interrupting her thoughts. Moony looks around, noting Spine is far ahead. The forest around them seems to ward off the sun, with the trees close together and reaching high into the sky.
"Nothing," Moony replies gruffly. She doesn't want to talk about her feelings to this practical stranger; Leaves had never bothered getting to know her now, and she doesn't see why he should start.
"Fine... touchy," Leaves mutters, distancing himself. Moony feels a little guilty for being so thorny, but she doesn't have time for chitchat.
Snow is starting to fall, and so is the temperature. Moony knows they'll need shelter, fast. Her heart jolts in fear when she realizes she can't see Spine anymore. She wants to call out, but she's scared that the shadows hide a predator. She looks at Leaves, who, as a Cavernguard, has no idea how dire the situation is. The snow will increase quickly, which will kill them in very little time.
"Leaves," Moony meows in a wobbled voice, panic rising, "where did Spine go?"
His white-splashed face swivels around as he searches, "I don't know..."
"Listen to me," Moony whispers, "We have to find Spine and get to shelter right now."
Finally the tom seems to sense her fear. Leaves whispers, "What's wrong?"
"The snow," Moony hisses, "it'll keep coming until it swallows us whole."
Chapter 5
"Spine!" Moony screeches, running ahead, forgetting her earlier caution. The snowfall is too blinding, even to spot a speck of orange fur.
"Moony, wait!" Leaves yells, trying to keep up, unused to having his long fur dragging in a deep pile of snow that is quickly getting harder to move in. The more experienced cats were too far ahead, fear striking Leaves as he loses sight of Moony immediately. He's feeling heavier by the second, but he has to keep going. "Moony!" He yowls, straining his ears to hear even the slightest sound.
But the wind and snow mute the world, and for the first time since he was a kit, Leaves feels as if he will die. Panic sets in, and he struggles in the snow. His head swings frantically as he looks for movement in the white world. His fur is now covered in snow, burying his gray fur.
"Please, don't leave me out here!" Leaves tries again, forcing sound out of his icy throat, mewling like a kit. His face feels frozen, his legs feel numb. "Moony!" He cries out, his voice raw through his painful throat, "Spine!" Not even tears can fall. So cold, he thinks, feeling heavy. He's not sure if he's even still awake, his mind reeling. The world is white.
Suddenly, his eyes catch something, and he leaps towards it with all his remaining energy. His numbed paws hit solid rock, and he nearly cries with joy as he realizes he's reached a cave. He dives onto the cold rock floor that is like solid ice, which burns his paws, but he ignores it and delves deeper. He lives and breathes rock every day, and he relaxes, knowing he is safe. He curls at the back of the cave in a small alcove, the closest thing to shelter he has. Although he is worried about the she-cats, all he can do is hope and pray to the Tribe of Endless Hunting that they'll be alright.
Meanwhile, Moony easily bounds through the growing amount of snow as she strains her senses to find Spine. All her training, and she can't find a single she-cat. She curses as it grows harder to see. If she doesn't find Spine, either she will die or they will both die. Moony notices a rock face close by. She has to be near a cave, which is a good sign. She briefly hopes that Spine and Leaves found shelter there, but she has to worry about herself. She draws her paws close to her chest every step, a perfected method of walking in the snow that every Snowtrekker should know, and makes her way to the rock. She feels it with her whiskers, smelling for the scent of earth that would give away a cave. She continues along it's surface, focusing all her energy on finding any shelter she can use until the snowstorm passes. Moony is too focused to realize a figure approaching her, silent in the snow, creeping after her. Moony finds the telltale signs of a cave nearby, rushing towards it. The figure follows her, getting closer and closer. Finally, Moony finds a cave, practically flying inside with a sigh of relief. Little does she know, the figure is close behind...

I read both chapters! (: I'll put some thoughts in a spoiler just so I don't ruin it for anyone else: I'm excited to see if the missing cats will be found and whether or not they'll be found dead or alive O.o I hope Jag is alive because I'd like to learn more about him and I'd feel bad for Moony if the tom she loved died ): We'll see! I'm also surprised how easily Lightspeaker let Moony go on the patrol XD As for critiques, I would just say to pay attention to the tenses because I noticed you switched from present to past a few times probably without realizing it. Present tense is always tricky, especially when you have to switch to past when talking about past events XD

Thanks, I've been trying to keep the correct tenses xD (I'm trying to challenge myself and clearly it's working)
We shall see There are reasons why he did, but I hope it wasn't rushed?

Yeah XD But, that’s good to give yourself a challenge! (: It does seem a little rushed. Maybe you could add a little more hesitation to Lightspeaker? Like a sigh or an expression that would kind of just be a simple fix?

The end of chapter 4 gave me chills... The combination of both natural and supernatural threats is excellent! Also, the 'unwilling teammates' dynamics is everything I hoped for cx
