(Iโve given up the idea of formatting on my phone lmao)
While he couldnโt quite recall what it had said, heโd gotten the gist of it. After all, heโd only skimmed the piece of paper. At the mention of a contract, however, the Tiefling nodded. โYeah, something like that. Iโd only skimmed it, but it seemed like it would be outgoing. I think heโs targeting somebody, but it was rather vague, so I donโt know if the two are related.โ Admittedly, he shouldโve at least taken it. The piece of paper had been of interest, so it wouldโve made sense to bring back with him.
On the topic of their hauls, however, Sarwala found himself grinning a little. Despite the assurance, he himself knew it had been an easy target. The man had been too drunk understand much, and had quite literally pass out as soon as heโd been laid down. Even still, it did make him feel better. โIโm looking forward to our future challenges. Iโm sure theyโll be fun.โ
He only gave a slight nod to the agreement on the Khajiitโs wares as he finally kicked off his shoes. It was sad, really. They had so much to offer her people didnโt seem to want to give them a chance. It was amazing how many stories theyโd shared between each other of the poor treatment. The ex-servant also remembered the stories they exchanged about the few kind souls theyโd encountered. He honestly loved talking to them, so he valued their time each time they came around. Grinning a bit when Zaphire confirmed they were still going to Westri, he nodded a little. Good - he figured it could be beneficial to find out what they could about this order or whatever they were.
While he didnโt notice when the other moved, gold eyes finally focused on him when he spoke up. It took him a second to register what he meant, but it clicked when he patted the empty side of the bed. Laughing a bit, he stood, chuckling. โI can handle a few kicks,โ he assured the other, sitting on the edge of the bed for a moment before laying down. โYou may wake up with me wrapped around you,โ he mused, staring up at the ceiling. โYouโll probably also wake up before me, so good luck waking me up.โ

(( lmao thatโs fair. I have my bbcode saved in a notepad and I just delete the text in the middle so I can copy & paste it for each post ))
โHm, well, itโs not as though assassins are a new thing in Thoril. People get killed all the time. There are mercenaries everywhere that can be hired to do your dirty work.โ He placed his arms behind his head and stared up at the dusty wooden ceiling. While it was not the most dangerous country to travel alone in and currently not at war, Thoril was a vicious land full of criminals and brutal people, who would stab first and ask questions never. People were desperate for money. They would do anything to pay for their next meal, even kill a man in cold blood. โPerhaps heโs here to slaughter a nobleman. Itโs possible he was hired by a jealous brother or vengeful servant. Might not be related to the emperor at all, but letโs keep an eye out just to be safe.โ
At the warning that he might wake to find Sarwala glued to him, he let out a small chuckle. โWouldnโt be the first time Iโve shared a bed with someone who likes to cuddle.โ It would be the first time in a while, though. He wasnโt quite used to sharing a bed or having company at all, for that matter. Most days were spent all on his own, sometimes with others if he decided to buy a ride from travelers heading in the same direction. In retrospect, the life he lead was a tad lonely, despite how he enjoyed the presence of others. It was just difficult to find people who were respectful and pleasant to be around, especially in the criminal world.
โIf I need to wake you up, thereโs a bucket of water with your name on it,โ Zaphire teases lightly, though he wasnโt quite that cruel. He reached over the other man to grab the candle on the nightstand and put it out, plunging the room into slight darkness. The only light was provided by the dim, crackling fire. When he rolled over onto his side to face the wall, he yawned and closed his eyes. โSweet dreams, Sarwala. May tomorrow be a better day.โ

(ahhh, that's smart - I don't know why I don't do that tbh)
He was right, assassins weren't a new concept here. He heard plenty of them alongside mercenaries for as long as he'd resided in the city. Their presence seemed to make up a large portion of the population of this ice-covered land, and no matter how many were caught or arrested or the like, their numbers never seemed to decrease. It was almost interesting to him that his kind was assumed to do the things most of the people out here were already doing. It was ironic, really. At the proposed theory surrounding the note, the tiefling only hummed in agreement. That was a very large possibility. Maybe he'd snag the paper in the morning... Or whatever time he woke up.
As the other chuckled, Sarwala couldn't help but grin. He didn't know when he picked up the behavior, but he just kind of clung in his sleep. He didn't remember his childhood specifically enough to remember when it started, either. Regardless, it didn't really bother him much. At the mention of the water bucket, however, he lifted his head dramatically. "Well I never!" He was being overly dramatic, one of his skills. Despite the statement, he was grinning ear to ear. Letting his head drop back onto the bed.
In the morning, true to his word, Sarwala was practically draped around the other tiefling. He was snoring gently, and it was very clear that he wouldn't be getting up anytime soon. Out in the foyer, the sleeping man's target was shouting. Something or other about how thugs must've come in during the night and ruined his things.

(( tbh it took me a while to figure out that I could do that, but it really saves a lot of time ))
Zaphire woke early in the morning to a cold room, but a warm body wrapped around his own. His first instinct was to panic โ he never slept with his back to the door, for fear that someone might creep in to stab him in the back โ and very narrowly stopped himself from elbowing Sarwala in the stomach. The events of the previous day slowly came rolling back in, from being imprisoned to escaping with his newfound comrade. In the dim morning light, he blinked tiredly over his shoulder at the snoring individual and took in the sight of his relaxed face. In all his life he had never met another one of his own kind, had never seen a tiefling up close in person before, unless he counted his own reflection.
What a strange sight it was.
Outside their little room, he could hear the man they targeted ranting about how his room had been trashed and his belongings stolen. A shame the man was foolish enough to fall for their scheme, but it had been lucky for the two of them.
Slowly, Zaphire reached out to shake Sarwalaโs shoulder. โWake up. Itโs morning,โ he mumbled through a wide yawn, recalling the manโs words about how it was difficult to wake him in the morning. Well, Zaphire may not have kicked him in his sleep, but he made no promises that he wouldnโt do so now. After a moment, he pushed the tiefling away to stretch and rise to his feet, feeling tired and sluggish from the stressful day before. His leg still ached from where heโd twisted it, but at least the bruise around his eye was beginning to fade a little. โSarwala, if youโre not up in the next five minutes, I will pour that entire bucket of water over your head.โ

(honestly I'm sure it does - I might start doing that tbh)
The tiefling hardly moved as the other experienced his initial reaction of panic, nor when he twisted to look at him. The thing about him was that he was a very deep sleeper. He fell asleep accounting for any possible interruptions from his surroundings, enabling him to ignore them while he slept. Despite this, any unusual sounds did cause him to shoot awake, often prepared for a fight of some sort. Luckily for him, Zaphire was not a source of unusual sounds to him despite having not slept next to anybody ever in a couple of years.
He only reacted when his companion shook his shoulder, groaning lowly, though not moving. Nothing in his head registered the fact that the other was talking. It did register, however, that he was shoved, another groan of protest that had the potential to be words escaping him. He drew an arm up over his eyes, muttering incoherently that he was awake. Not that it came out as anything comprehensible, but in his mind, he knew what he'd meant to say. It wasn't until he was threatened with cold water that he reacted even somewhat like somebody who was awake and function. "I'm up..." he sighed, finally rubbing his eyes before sitting up slowly.
The pain in his thigh seemed to have only amplified, though it was likely because he'd continued on as normal despite the injury the previous day. Eyes only half-open, he glanced around the room, finally finding the currently blurry image that he assumed was the other tiefling. "Why so early?" Honestly, it wouldn't be a problem if he felt better. Sadly, the previous days events had caught up with him and he wanted nothing more than to sleep for an eternity.

โBetter to leave early after a night of stealing,โ Zaphire states with a smirk as he cracked the muscles in his back and shoulders. He snagged his cloak from where Sarwala had placed it, fastened the button, and pulled on his boots. โSounds to me like that man is stirring up quite a commotion of his missing belongings. I wonder where they could have disappeared to? I certainly havenโt seen a shiny golden watch or a lost bag of coins. This place must be crawling with thieves, so who knows?โ
In all seriousness, it was always a wise decision to leave the scene of a crime as soon as possible to lower the amount of suspicion placed upon themselves. Knowing how nasty the innkeeper was, he didnโt doubt that she would try to accuse them of what they had actually done. Well, they might have been guilty, but that didnโt mean anyone needed to know they were guilty.
โI was thinking we could swing by the merchantโs place first, sell our wares,โ he said as he carefully tucked his coin purse and precious valuables away into hidden pockets. โThen weโll visit the Khajiits on our way out of the city, find a couple horses, and start our journey to Westri.โ It was a solid plan, all things considered, and would hopefully be easier with two people rather than just one. Having another person nearby was good for more than just company โ it provided extra security, another mind to add to plans, and discouraged other criminals from targeting them on their travels.

The tiefling only huffed at the answer he received, knowing the other was right. It was better that they didn't stick around for too long. Finally standing up, he couldn't help but wince. Oh, his leg definitely was not happy with him. Still, he picked up one of the shirts he'd snagged the previous night - it was a simple white shirt, but he did enjoy the warmth it provided - and pulled it on. Stretching, he glanced towards the other as he spoke of the clearly upset man in the foyer. Grinning a little, he nodded. "I wouldn't be surprised - Thoril ain't the safest place," he mused, finally seeming genuinely awake.
After collected the two amethysts from the coin pouch, he added them to his little back of jewelry. Once that he was done, he managed to fit the coin pouch into the same back before attaching it to his hip. He'd come in with one small pouch, he'd be leaving with only one small pouch. The only thing that hadn't fit was the watch, which he slipped easily into his pocket. When his companion spoke up, Sarwala nodded. "Sounds like a plan. There should be a stable that isn't terribly far from here after we stop at the caravan. It's typically poorly guarded, so we should be fine."
Giving himself a once over, he ensured that he had everything he needed on his person. With his done, he turned, finally opening the door and leaving the room once he knew Zaphire was ready as well. He didn't speak to anybody on the way out, finding he just didn't want to draw any uncalled for attention. He, did, however, pick up a stray coat that had simply been tossed onto the back of the chair on the way out. He did it wordlessly, putting it on all in one smooth motion. While people were busy, natural movements made for good grab-and-go's. If it looked natural, those around him who were already distracted wouldn't think anything of it. He'd picked it up early on in his days as an up and coming thief, and it hadn't failed him yet.
That didn't seem to change as he made his way out of the building, glancing back as he held the door open for the other tiefling. For a brief moment, he was thankful that he had grabbed it. It was colder than he remembered, though that likely had something to do with the sun not quite being up yet.

(( sorry this reply is bleh. I had a really nice, detailed one written out and then my word document crashed so I lost it :c ))
The merchantโs corner was easy to find for those who knew where to look. Not many buyers were present that day โ evidently it was not the most popular day of the week for sales โ but the ones that were had positive reactions to their small collection of valuables. The jewelry sold fast and for a decent sum, but it was the amethysts and the watch that Sarwala procured that surprisingly held the most value.
With their coin purses now pleasantly heavy, they moved on through the city at a steady pace. Not as quickly as Zaphire would have liked, but he found that his leg felt much worse today than it did the day before. The area where he was kicked had swollen and turned into a nasty bruise, each step he took sending pain up his calf and into his hip bone. It was bad enough to make him bite his tongue in an attempt to cope with it. As they walked, he favored his good leg, and tried his best not to show how much discomfort he was truly in.
Their final stop before they could search for transportation out of the city was the Khajiit caravan, which was located on the outskirts of the settlement. A cloth tent was pitched around a little area, providing a bit of protection from the wind, and items of all kinds were spread across the covered ground.
The first khajiit to spot them was older, brown fur turned grey with time and face dotted with scars. He bared his fangs in a smile. โWelcome, travelers. Searching for wares, yes?โ
โArmour, specifically,โ Zaphire said with a smile in return. โIf you have any, weโd be interested in taking a look.โ
โMarkor sells the finest armour in all of Thoril,โ the man replied and spread his hands to indicate his own little area.

(Honestly I feel that and I'm sorry for your loss - also my response is lame I'm so sorry)
The tiefling hadn't been smug that his own loot had sold for more, rather he was surprised that it had. It made him wonder why those in the castle thought so highly of the jewels they had. Regardless, it gave them more than enough to get to their next destination even after they bought armor and whatever else they saw fit. As they moved through the city, he found himself attempting to adjust to the pain shooting up into his stomach from his right thigh. Not that it worked, but he was doing his best to tolerate it.
When they reached the caravan, he couldn't help but feel the slightest bit of relief. The Khajiit had always meant friendly faces to him, and today would be no different. Listening to the exchange, he couldn't help the smile that spread across his features. As he indicated to the armor, gold-colored eyes swept over the selection. He quickly settled on a leather armor set, eyes lighting up at the sight of it. If it were being honest, it looked like a set he'd eyed as a child but had been too small to wear.
Sarwala paid for the set a mere second after hearing the price. He'd also picked up a couple healing items, figuring they would do some good for the both of them right about now. By the time they said their goodbyes and left the caravan, he looked like a child who'd got the dog they were begging for. To say he'd been excited about the armor set was an understatement.

(( Your reply is good! Sorry about the spotty activity. Itโs a busy weekend for me ))
Lightweight armor was better suited for those who wished to remain quiet on their feet, as well as those who didnโt want to be hindered by the weight of heavier materials. Sarwalaโs choice of leather was one that Zaphire approved of. For himself, he picked out a set of fur armor. The material was thicker and he thought that it would keep him warmer, but it also possessed multiple pockets that could come in handy for stowing away any valuables they happened to stumble across. He decided to be generous and treat himself by purchasing a leather satchel along with, thinking that it would be useful on their long journey.
He gratefully paid the khajiit, said his goodbyes, and followed along after the much taller tiefling. The place they came to a stop at was near to a river, icy water bubbling and rippling gently over snow covered rocks and frozen mud. A small wooden structure stood not far away, a little stable that contained but two horses. Sturdy creatures with broad shoulders and long, wild manes to keep them warm. One was solid black a mare, the other a dappled gray and brown stallion. Healthy, from what he could tell from the distance, and grazing happily at their feed buckets.
Zaphire pursed his lips in thought as he eyed them, running a hand through his hair and over one of his horns. Thoughtfully, he asked his companion, โShould we steal or pay for a wagon? I donโt want to spend too much before we reach Westri, but I also donโt think itโs a good idea to draw more attention to ourselves than necessary. We might have to give in and pay a covered wagon to take us the way or at least part of the way.โ
Traveling on foot sounded like a nightmare with their injuries, but sometimes it had to be done. If they could get a ride half of the way, then perhaps it would give them time to heal and rest. Maybe it wouldnโt be so bad.

(Itโs fine!! I work all weekend every weekend so my activity is gonna be questionable at best till Monday)
The leather armor had quite a few pouches, though he was just excited to have proper armor at this point. As they left the caravan, he didnโt bother taking in much of their surroundings - it was mostly snow anyways. Soon enough, they did come upon the stables and he glanced over. Two horses who didnโt appear to be as bothered by the cold as he was, though he figured thatโs what they had been bred for. They were gorgeous, too.
At the question posed, Sarwala thought for a moment. Having horses would be easier, but having time to simply rest while the traveling was done for them did sound nice. In the interest of long term coin, however, obtaining the horses would make more sense. โWe should just get the horses - or at least one. Then we donโt have to pay every time we want a ride.โ He paused, looking at the stables. There was an inner portions meaning there had to be some sort of storage, right? โIf we can manage to clean out the owner, we can pay him with his own money,โ the Tiefling suggested.
It was something heโd done when he was young - paying people with their own money, that is. It hadnโt failed him thus far, but it had also been a few years. He didnโt know the person who owned the stable, be he figured that he could distract them while his companion searched the place. Or... โOr we straight steal them - either way it would eliminate the possibility of paying for future wagon rides.โ
What he was attempting to do was converse money in the long run. Partially because he theyโd be able to buy weapons later, but also for food and the like. Then again, he personally wouldnโt mind hunting for the both of them if it came down to it. He also just didnโt see the point of getting wagons if they didnโt have to.

(( Thatโs okay! I might have a busy time this week, Iโm not too sure yet. ))
Zaphire weighed their options carefully, eyeing the horses from where they stood, then glancing to the small wooden house where the owner must live. They could reasonably do as Sarwala suggested and steal the manโs money, use it to pay for a horse, and be on their way. It was a good idea and would keep them from spending what little gold they had collected. Still, something in the back of his mind disagreed with the plan. A weird sort of instinct, perhaps more like a hunch, that told him no. While he wasnโt the smartest person around, Zaphire made a habit of trusting his gut and following his first instinct when it came to things such as this. He didnโt steal if it didnโt feel right, if he wasnโt absolutely certain that the plan would go over well.
โI donโt think we should steal his money. Letโs just take the horses and be gone,โ the tiefling decided softly, as he approached the stables. He did a quick glance of the area โ no workers or passers by to witness their crime โ and then slid into the first stall, with the black mare. He cooed to her quietly as he petted her flank, โHello to you, beautiful. Want to come along on our journey?โ
Her slight snort was all the confirmation he needed to clumsily climb up onto her back, thankful that both horses were already saddled up. He glanced over to the side at Sarwala before he noticed why, exactly, he had felt so uneasy.
A small group of the empressโs guards exited the stable ownerโs house, followed by the owner in question. There was no time to do anything. Not to hide or try to be less conspicuous, left in plain sight. The first guard to notice the pair of tieflingโs nearly choked on his own words as he sputtered, โThere! Itโs them!โ
โNope, bad decision,โ Zaphire muttered in a slight panic as he urged the horse to start moving. She did so without any hassle, moving swiftly away from the stable. Worried for the safety of his new friend, he shouted, โHurry!โ

(this is kinda lame cause my brain died towards the end)
His ideas were just that - ideas. Not all of them were great, he'd admit, so he didn't really mind when people shot them down. So, he simply waited for a response from his friend. When he received one, Sarwala nodded a little and followed him towards the stables. He typically didn't ask questions on a failed idea, simply assuming it had been a bad idea. Besides that, he often just did things and worked it out as he went - proposing ideas wasn't something he did often.
As Zaphire found his way into the first stall, he made it into the second, grinning at the dappled stallion. He hadn't made use of his ring in a very long time, so he was rather excited. "Hey, bud - you wanna get outta here, yeah?" He kept his voice low, glancing back out into the open area once or twice. The horse replied with a short whiny that rang in the tiefling's ears as the ring worked it's magic. "Can you really make it happen?" The double horned man grinned, nodding a little as he mounted the horse.
Rather than looking over to his companion, golden orbs settled on guards leaving the house. Specifically, the empress's guards. He cursed as they were spotted, focal point changing as his friend took off. "You can jump that fence, right?" The stallion beneath him took off after the mare with a snort, and did so without much warning, jolting the man riding him. "Of course I can!" They came upon the edge of the field quickly, and when the time came, the stallion cleared the fence with room to spare.
The landing had been rough on Sarwala's part, however. He'd never ridden a horse that jumped, and part of him was regretting not going through the open part of the fence. Still, it had been a ton of fun. He gave no indication of stopping, however, wanting to put as much distance as he could between themselves and the guards. After all, the guards would have to find a mode of transport if they even wanted a chance of following them at this point.

The guards set off at a swift pace behind the escaped criminals, shouting curses and threats of eternal suffering. No man, no matter how fast he could move, would ever be able to outrun a fully rested horse. Zaphireโs horse cleared the fence just behind Sarwala and he let out a surprised yelp at the rough landing, hands scrambling to hold on tight and prevent himself from being thrown off by the force of it. Horseback riding was not his biggest talent. Risking a glance over his shoulder, he stuck out his tongue and made a rude face. โHa! Goodbye, silly guards! May I never see your ugly faces again!โ
Perhaps the gloating came a bit too soon, as Zaphire noticed the men hail down a passing wagon, unhook the horses, and climb onto their borrowed steeds.
โOh, for crying out loud,โ Zaphire muttered in exasperation, urging his new mare into a full on gallop. If they could get a large lead, they could likely lose the men and carry on their way. At least, thatโs what he figured, until he saw one guard raise a bow, an arrow already notched and ready to be fired. His red face paled considerably as he called up to Sarwala, โWe have trouble! Archers!โ
An arrow whizzed by his left, missing him by a wide margin and sticking itself into the frozen bark of a nearby tree. Still, the sound was enough to make him jump out of his skin.
Mostly to himself, he muttered, โDear gods, donโt let me die from an arrow, please. I know Iโm a thief and one time I might have broken that prized glass vase all the way from Skyrim, but Iโm too pretty to die this young!โ

(I'll likely edit this tomorrow cause yikes)
Sarwala found himself laughing at his friend's farewell, finding that he really quite agreed with the sentiment. He never wanted to see the men again. After spending years in the palace, he'd grown tired of seeing them, and now he was a very much wanted man. He personally felt that these were two good reasons to never want to see the men again. So he continued to ride, refusing to look back as he did. He could only assume that they would most definitely lose them. Or, he'd hoped so, anyway.
When Zaphire called for archers, he glanced back only to see an arrow lodge itself in a tree. Cursing he looked around. There was nowhere to go that wasn't open area, and they no longer had the advantage of being on horseback. "What a good time to have no weapons," he muttered, pulling the horse to the left. He was met with protest, however, the steed made the sharp turn around anyways.
The tiefling charged towards the guards, narrowly dodging another set of arrows. What he counted as narrowly was one knicking his first set of horns. His cucrent plan was to pull one of them from their mounts. Sadly, this was the kind of thing that only worked once per event, as the other enemies wised up to what would happen should they get too close while he was unarmed. Still, it didn't stop him from charging ahead, and when he was close enough, he leaned a bit to his right, pulling one of the guards from their horse was he took another sharp turn. In hindsight, on of the guard's knives would've been better, but this worked too.
As the guard took the fall, Sarwala was met with an arrow in the shoulder. He cried out, looking at the new protrusion. Well, it hadnโt hit the joint directly, but that didnโt mean it wasnโt painful. He didnโt get to properly locate the other guard, rather focused on riding in the opposite direction from which the arrow originated.

(( this is super short sorry! ))
Zaphire didnโt expect Sarwala to turn around and charge straight toward the enemy guards, to face them head on like a madman. He gaped after the man, unsure of what to do, and wondered if he should follow the other manโs lead. However, before he could make a decision, Sarwala was returning to his side, worse for wear. The arrow sticking out of his shoulder proved exactly why Zaphire thought the idea had been foolish and not so well thought out.
โWhat in the gods have you done, Sarwala?โ Cried the tiefling as they rode further away, and while they were no longer being followed, he wasnโt sure it was worth the new injury. โYouโve got an arrow in your shoulder!โ

(Shhhh itโs fine!!)
It definitely wasnโt his best idea. Riding directly towards the threat with nothing more but his claws to defend himself was far from the best idea, especially considering he hadnโt swiped a weapon. Even still, an arrow to the shoulder was a scratch compared to what could have happened. After all, he couldโve died. Ah, but he didnโt! Which meant this his dumb idea didnโt go all the poorly. Even still, he knew that it was likely that he wouldnโt get away with this again if a similar situation were to occur down the road.
As he rejoined his companion, he grinned at him when a question was posed. โTook care if the problem!โ The guards liked to at least travel in pairs outside of the palace, and those to were no different considering they were no longer being followed. When his injury was pointed out, the Tiefling only gave a slight shrug with his food shoulder. โYeah, but weโre not being followed. And I bought some healing stuff from the caravan, so itโs all good!โ He was very sure of this, and thusly saw no problem with the arrow sticking out of his shoulder.
Looking ahead, he couldnโt help but continue grinning. โHow long is it to get to Westi? Figure weโll need to hunt or somethinโ if itโs more than a few hours.โ He didnโt know about Zaphire, but he was hungry. He wanted food, and he wanted it sooner rather than later.

โIt is not โall goodโ!โ Zaphire shot back, his voice carried high over the sound of the rushing wind and horse hooves beating against the ground. He wasnโt one to worry too much, but this was his new friendโthe only comrade and company he expected to have for a long time. They just broke out of the palace dungeons together, they were going to be traveling together from now on, and that meant they needed to look after one another. โHealing stuff will not fix an arrow wound to the shoulder, Mister Reckless.โ
Still, he couldnโt help but huff out a small breath of laughter. What a tough, silly man he had found himself accompanied by. Unbothered baby an arrow to the shoulder, still able to joke and grin like it was nothing. โI believe itโs only a dayโs travel away, but Iโm not certain. Iโve never been there before.โ

Sarwala couldn't help but roll his eyes at the response he received, though he was still grinning. Everything was most definitely fine - sure, he was in pain, but it was much better than being hauled back to the palace. He couldn't help but laugh at the new name he was given, though waved off the comment. "Sure it will! It'll speed up the healing process." At their next stop, he'd make quick work of dressing the injury to the best of his abilities. It wouldn't be up to a healer's standards, but he'd make do with what he had right now.
When he got an answer to his question, he only nodded. "We should probably figure out we we're doing about food, then." What he was actually saying was he was hungry. Regardless of this fact, though, he knew it wasn't the best choice to travel for a full day without eating anything.

โYou say that now, but if that arrow had hit you in the chest, no amount of healing supplies would have saved your reckless hide. Iโm not a magician nor am I doctor,โ Zaphire pointed out, more teasing than angry, despite it being a legitimate concern of his. While he could express his worry as much as he wanted, he was little more than a stranger to this man, and couldnโt make his decisions for him. โYouโd have bled to death before I reached you, silly man.โ
On the topic of food, he gave a grin that could have put the shining sun to shame. โDonโt you worry, I am an excellent hunter. We can stop halfway and scrounge up a meal before we continue. No sense in traveling on an empty stomach.โ He wasnโt much good with a bow and arrow, but if they stayed near the river, he was more than capable of fishing with his hands. Not the best way to gather food, though it worked in a pinch. Best of all, it required no tools.
It was not long before Zaphire guided his mare to a stop by a shaded side of the river, under the cover of a group of tall trees. Snow began to flurry down, but by now, he was so cold that he barely noticed. He clumsily slid down to his feet, nearly slipping on the icy ground, and padded over to Sarwala and his horse. Patted the man on the calf and looked up at him. โOff, off,โ he urged, with a smile. โLet me look at your shoulder before we do anything. I donโt want it getting infected.โ

The Tiefling only grinned as Zaphire spoke on what could have been had the arrow landed elsewhere. Despite how his features morphed, he knew the other had a point. He could very well be dead right now. At the mention of bleeding to death, he only gave a thoughtful hum. While he had clearly never experienced such a thing, he was sure that was it was rather unpleasant. Hopefully it wouldnโt be something heโd experience any time soon.
After all, heโd only just escaped.
When he received an answer to his question, Sarwala nodded. โThatโs good - Iโm more of a fighter than a hunter,โ he confessed. Heโd never been good at hunting, although he admired the skill. Still, it never stopped him from trying, as he was no stranger to chasing down elk. That was a bit of fun so long as they didnโt turn around and try to defend themselves.
Soon enough they were stopping by the river just as it began to snow. Now, he hated the cold, but watching snow fall was very calming to him. Heโd nearly gotten caught up in doing so when his companion patted his leg, requesting he get down. Smiling with a nod, he did just that. โIโm sure itโll be fine! Here,โ he said, producing one of the four vials heโd bought from the khajiits. โThis one should do nicely.

(( itโs okay! As long as I have something to work with I donโt mind ))
โItโll be fine, he says,โ Zaphire mumbled under his breath as Sarwala jumped down and produced a small vial from one of his many pockets. The tiefling urged him to sit on a nearby stone and lift his shirt off for him to get a better look. Now, the wound was still bleeding, but it didnโt look nearly as bad as it could have. Deep but not too deep and it seemed to have missed any major arteries or areas of bone, though that was only his best guess. With a bit of bandage and some of the healing ointment, he made quick work of the wound, cleaning and covering it as best he knew how. โTry to remember that you are a man and not a walking target.โ
He grinned as he said it, however, finding his companion's cheery attitude rather contagious.
โNow, letโs find some food, shall we? I quite like fish,โ he said as he wiped his hands off and stepped over to the riverside. The edges of the water were frosted over, but further down, it moved too quickly to be frozen. He did his best to step around the rocks and avoid getting his shoes wet. Here, he could already see a fish or two flinging themselves further up the river, traveling to warmer places and following their brethren.
Zaphire crouched down and waited, like a cat, silent and patient. His tail twitched, but otherwise, he was completely still. Eyeing the stream up ahead with a strong intensity and concentration. The moment he saw a fish jump, he lunged, grasping at it with his bare hands. It was slippery and cold, but he dug his nails in and held on tightly, raising it above it head. โA fish! I am a master, Sarwala. Hello, fish, you shall be our lunch. I am very sorry, but that is just how life works.โ

The tiefling chuckled though he found himself nodding a bit. "I'll do my best to keep that in mind, friend." It a bit more effort to contain his comment about being red like a target, however the other man had a point. He was, in fact, a man rather than a target. It wasn't that he treated himself as one, rather it was just that he was little too reckless for his own good, which often resulted in being injured like this. Still, he felt as though everything had turned out rather well considering the circumstances he had been acting under.
Once he'd been treated, only wincing once or twice with the application of the healing ointment, he smilled at the suggesting of gathering food. "Fish sounds good to me," Sarwala agreed, though he took a mental note of the fact that he himself wasn't good at fishing any way he looked at it. Still, he followed Zaphire to the river, however, remained on the river side as the other traveled across the rocks. He brought himself down into a crouching postion, watching the other as he brought his focus on the water. Maybe this was why he wasn't good at fishing - he wasn't entirely the best at sitting still for so long. Even still, he waited with his friend, watching in amazement as he snatched a fish from the air.
Only a second after he was cheering for him, practically beaming at he spoke. "That's pretty awesome! How'd you learn to do that?" he asked, head tilting just slightly to the right as he did so. While he asked, he was very sure it was not a skill that would come to him easily - he was more the type to chase down animals and bring them down like a wolf. It eliminated the concept of sititing and waiting too long for him, which he rather liked.
Then again, it would be awesome to snatch a fish like that.

The fish flopped unhappily in Zaphireโs arms, struggling in vain to free itself. He had to dig his fingers in to keep the creature still as he carefully made his way back over, grinning from ear to ear at the praise he received. โItโs not so difficult once you get the hang of it,โ he brushed off the compliment, though it was clear that he enjoyed being told so by the way he beamed. โA friend of my mother taught me. Well, of my adoptive mother. He was a fisherman. When she was too sick to watch after me, he would take me along on his boat. In the summer, we would catch the fish with our hands and spend hours swimming in the water.โ
A fisherman who had loved him, no matter how bizarre Zaphire looked or how the other villagers avoided him as best they could. The only father figure he had known and now dearly missed, though the lessons he had learned from him were ones that he still used.
Zaphire placed the fish near his bag on the shore and stepped over the stones back to the center of the river. โI love the water, Sarwala. Donโt you? Itโs comforting to be near the river again.โ It was too cold for a swim, but the sound of it rushing by was soothing, and he crouched down to watch the lines of fish as they passed. Waited, then swiped up a second one with ease, as well as a third. One fish was plenty for himself, but Sarwala seemed hungry enough to eat multiple helpings on his own. โI hear that the warm place across the mountains is full of wide rivers and lakes. Right near the ocean. I canโt wait to be there.โ
