the huntฮd โฅ A "HIS DARK MATERIALS" ROLEPLAY โฅ OVERVIEW The ancient witch clans of the north have lived in peace with the rest of the world for thousands of years. Apart from the industrial world, they are an archaic culture that live harmoniously with nature, and are in tune with the spirit of the Earth, drawing certain magical abilities from it. The witches have clung to the ways of their ancient religion as the power of the Church rose around them, taking hold of most of western civilization and creating the all-powerful governing body known as the Magisterium. Soon, the Magisterium was on the witches doorstep. Declaring them worshippers of a false religion and enemies of God, the witches were cast out of their ancestral homes and slaughtered. That is, except for those who escaped. The remaining witches have fled aboard Gyptian boats, forced to remain hidden, for the Magisterium knows of the survivors' existence and have placed a bounty on their heads. They have employed a secret service of Hunters, humans loyal to the Church and willing to travel to the ends of the earth to see the witches destroyed. Here, in Oxford, a few remaining witches attempt to hide in plain sight, disguising their identities, as the ruthless Hunters close in... Members Name Name

Witches " Witches were humanoid beings but distinct from humans biologically and culturally. Like humans, witches had dรฆmons, which always settled in the form of birds. Witches aged much more slowly than humans, and were known to live for more than a thousand years. In Lyra's world, only female witches existed. In this world, witches bore the children of human men, who were witches if female and human if male. There were other worlds in which there were male witches. Witches were able to feel cold, but it did not cause them harm. They were also able to feel tingling and silky sensations on their skin when exposed to starlight and moonlight respectively." - hdm wikiAbilitiesFlightWitches were capable of using branches of cloud-pine to fly. Cloud-pine was a type of tree with magical properties. Witches used branches of cloud-pine to fly, and were the only ones known to be able to do so. InvisibilityWhile true invisibility was impossible, witches were able to enter a fiercely-held modest state of mind which allowed them to go unnoticed. With the correct degree of intensity, a witch would be able to pass through a crowded room or walk beside a single person unnoticed. Weather controlWitches were able to control the weather to a degree. Serafina Pekkala and her clan were able to summon winds to speed Lee Scoresby's balloon on its way. HealingWitches were capable of performing healing magic. However, this type of spell proved ineffective against the wounds caused to Will Parry by รsahรฆttr. CultureSocietyWitches did not have possessions, and their only means of exchange was mutual aid. Witches divided themselves into communities known as clans. Each clan had its own territory with definite but irregular borders which varied from season to season based on the growth of plants and the migration of animals. Clans formed alliances and enmities with each other. DรฆmonsWitches took part in a coming-of-age ritual, wherein they travelled to a barren land in the North where their dรฆmons could not go, much like the land of the dead. The completion of this ritual allowed them to separate from their dรฆmons over long distances. ReligionWitches were known to worship at least one deity. Hunters Hunters are recruited from all corners of the globe, hailing from all different walks of life, with a few commonalities: they must be skilled in combat, adept trackers, loyal to the Magisterium, and most importantly, ready to kill. They can be male or female, with male being the more prevalent gender. Hunters must swear an oath of loyalty to the Magisterium, and adhere to a Code. They must be willing to die for their cause. They are required to be armed, although they may use weapons of their own choosing. Similarly, they may dress however they please, although blending in is encouraged heavily. They carry a Hunter's badge, often kept concealed but to be used in cases of exerting their authority over average citizens to aid in their hunt. Even police are second to them. The Hunter's Codei. The Oath of Fealty to the Magisterium must be taken by all in the Hunter's Order. The Magisterium is your Savior, and as such is owed the same loyalty as you have to God. The Magisterium, The Church, and God are one and the same. A betrayal to the Magisterium is a betrayal of God. ii. A member of the Hunter's Order must be a master of their craft. Their weapon of choice must be able to swiftly and effectively give them the upper hand in combat. Hesitation to kill a witch or a citizen harboring a witch will not be tolerated. Sparing the lives of either is an act of treason. iii. A Hunter must prioritize their sworn duty to the Magisterium over all. Their past life, their family, their own wants and desires must be placed second to their mission. A Hunter does not practice mercy.

but as far as rp, do you have any plot ideas in mind? personally i really like the witches in hdm. it'd be cool to play a witch character if we could fit it into the plot somehow. oooh i also like the gyptians.

Yessss. The gyptians are really cool! I remember being interested in them. And I'm sure there's a way to fit a witch into the plot! What sort of plot should we have though? What sort of conflict or destination in mind?

my idea is for like a "witch hunt" kind of plot. only if you like the idea if you aren't super into it we could totally go a different route! let's say the magisterium (the government/church) has a kind of secret service of witch hunters b/c witches are consitered sacrilegious. so they've essentially destroyed the witch clans & driven them out of their homes in northern europe. the remaining witches are forced to hide among regular humans, but are still being hunted. tbh i would enjoy playing either the witch characters or the witch hunters, so i feel like it's a good plot from both ends :-) it could be set somewhere like oxford, like the original books or anywhere we want really.
if we wanted to integrate the gyptians, we could say that they were helping the witches hide out on their boats n stuff, since i think in the books they were kinda looked down upon by most of society as well

That sounds like an interesting plot to me! I'd be willing to do it. Might play a witch hunter depending on how the plotting goes. Having characters on both ends of the plot would probably be more interesting. I'm cool with somewhere like Oxford as well. I think it's a classic scene and visual that would make it easier than somewhere else (ex. the mountains) in the original books since Oxford and places like it are prominent. It doesn't have to be Oxford, but a similar set up would probably be cool. The gyptians as well would probably fit in well like you described. And yes, they were looked down on by society. What sorts of plot are we looking at. The overarching one being the hunting of the witches, yes? But what should get in the way (gyptians are one, but anything else?) and what about the witches themselves? What are they doing? Since this is a place like Oxford, are there any other people helping either group?

hmmm it depends on what characters we wanna play! since i think i remember the witches living further north like where finland/norway/ect would be, we could do a small coven of surviving witches taking refuge in oxford. maybe they travel there via the gyptian boats? and a couple witch hunters are on their tail, maybe the witches are well disguised, there could be interactions between the witches & hunters where they haven't even figured out who they are yet. & we could see how it unfolds through rp! i'm better with big picture plots than the details lol, so lemme know if you have more specific ideas :-)

maybe the witch hunters get tipped off to the witches location, so they know where to go but have to figure out who they are ? i feel like that would make for some interesting rp scenarios, then as the plot progresses and they do figure out who some of the witches are, there would be good battle scenes

oh! and there could always be a hunter who goes rouge, maybe flips sides & helps the witches out, getting them in deep trouble with the authorities

Yes. Yes. And yes. I agree with all of that!
I think that's a detailed enough plot for me, truthfully. Unless you can think of any further details that might be needed. If now, wanna talk about who we should RP? I'm now completely going to do a witch hunter. XD One that goes rogue would be cool too! Got any character ideas? Should we make forms or just jump in?

i wanted to make lil character background profiles or something, then just jump in! i wanna play a witch & a hunter for sure. even tho its just the 2 of us for now, i think multiple characters would be good. the only thing is we gotta try to avoid interacting w our own characters lol so maybe we can start off with you playing a witch hunter, me playing a witch & branch off from there as we see necessary.

That sounds like a good plan! Some interactions with our own characters should be okay, just so long as we also include interactions with characters that aren't our own. (example: I have two of my witch hunters talk with each other but then have one of my witch hunters turn and talk to your witch hunter) Just so long as there's always something we can build off of. Starting with two characters - maybe one of the witches in Oxford and then a Witch Hunter that's scouting out a part of the city? - work to begin with and hopefully well collect more people as we go. Also, I'll add the resources to the first post so they're easy to find!

THE HUNTERS NIKOLAI SOLAS WEST / MALE / 35 YEARS / HUNTER& LAIKA / PHARAOH HOUNDRugged and leanly muscled, one would think from Solasโs appearance he must hail from the wild, wild west of New Denmark. His wardrobe โ mostly consisting of brown, black and faded leather โ is reminiscent of the land where buffalo roam and gunslingers traverse desert highways on horseback. Indeed, he is a New Danish man, but he is a city boy at heart. If you were to ask him, the cobbled streets of his boyhood proved equally full of hardship and adventure. His features are not particularly hard on the eyes, but he is certainly not everyoneโs cup of tea โ with longish, often greasy and tousled, brown hair and angular features. His facial hair is shaven often enough to prevent the growth of a full beard, but these occasions are few and far between enough to result in an almost permanent state of stubble. His brows are thick, straight and low, covering deep set dark brown eyes. He is not the tallest of men, barely grazing 5โ11โ, but his demeanor is thoroughly intimidating. In sharp contrast, his daemon Laika is a beautifully groomed specimen โ a white Egyptian pharaoh hound carrying all the poise and grace of a prize-winning show dog. THE HUNTED MINNA SOBAKIIN / FEMALE / 127 YEARS / WITCH& ANNUNAKI / BARN OWLMinna is an olive skinned and fiercely freckled girl with shrewd brown eyes. Her youthful appearance may make her age hard to grasp, but after all she is no human, and actually quite young by witch standards. Choppy dark hair, cut more for necessity than style, falls to her shoulders or is swept back in a rough braid. Her eyes are perpetually narrowed, suggesting Northern Native heritage somewhere in her undefinable ethnic background. Her face is broad, as well as her shoulders and hips, and she is short, standing a mere 5โ3โ. Annunaki is an equally strange creature, a ghostly barn owl with haunting circular black eyes typical of his species, but carrying the gleam of Minnaโs intelligence.

Thank you! I did have one question, mintedstar/fur๐ฆ . What time period is this rp based in exactly? i'll try to answer since she's not online! the book never gives an exact date (i think) but based on the culture/technology it's our world's equivalent of the 1800s
