But I won't live that way Though I kind of want to anyway Kind of want to play With all the pretty and the pure Well I return to the earth I return to the dust No more beauty by the pound And this I do not trust
◌ Introduction -- In a world not so different from our own, the line between human and animal is blurred. There are humans and there are wild animals, but there are also those who belong in neither category, or both at the same time. They are as human as you or me one moments, and something entirely different the next. These creatures are called shape shifters. In this world, they live not in cities or in villages, but in the wild. Some inhabit rudimentary structures in the trees, others the sturdy fortresses of caves. Their social structures are based on their animal counterparts. Some, like the elk shifters, travel in massive tribes. Others are more solitary, like the owls, who prefer their own company above anyone else's. This story follows two tribes in particular, one of the crows and the other of the snow leopard,s as they face a threat unlike any before.

◌ About the Roleplay -- This is a take on the classic tribe RP. It's going to be pretty casual, meaning I'm not going to explain a bunch of the lore or world. We can just figure that out in RP. The basic gist is that this takes place in the forests, where shape shifters live among the other woodland creatures. Unlike many other tribe roleplays, this takes place in a colder, more northern setting. The shapeshifters do live structures, but nothing in the way of castles or towns. They are more interested in being a part of their natural setting. This means they are influenced by their animal counterparts in their behaviors. The crows like to be high in the trees, so they build structures in the canopy. Snow leopards like to be a little more isolated, so they tend to like in the mountains in caves.
Shape-shifters: They have two forms, a human form and an animal form. Shapeshifters cannot shift into any animal, only one kind. These are genetically inherited abilities. For example, two eagle shapeshifters will have eagle offspring. An eagle shapeshifter and a deer shapeshifter could have either kind of child. But a deer and an eagle would never have, for example, a woodpecker baby. Additionally, shifters tend to mostly associate with their own kind. Any group of them is always referred to a tribe, though they vary in size depending on their type. There can be a tribe of fifty elk shifters compared to a tribe of two or three owls.
The forest: The climate is similar to that of, Russia or parts of China. It is heavily forested, and the elevation is high enough for the land to experience all four seasons. There are humans in this world, but it is not as industrialized as our world (think like 12th century level of technology), so they mostly stay in their own little pockets of civilization. Shape shifters and humans do not often interact.

“It is done, Sora. There is nothing you can do to change it.”
Sora sat stock still, barely breathing, as though she had become one of the great many trees that served as the backdrop to her tribe’s home. Her green-blue gaze was locked on the face of her tribe’s chief, a man of an elder age; his once dark hair had lightened to a salt-and-pepper color that was bordering on the edge of going entirely grey. Sora scanned his face, searching for any sign that her chief wasn’t being entirely truthful with her. There was nothing; his face was blank aside from the glimmer of sympathy in his dark gaze, as he stared into Sora’s eyes. Her jaw clenched and unclenched repeatedly as she forced the air that had been sitting in her lungs for far to long out of her nose. Her fingers curled into fists, nails digging into her palms; she could feel the prick of claws against her flesh. The elder bowed his head slightly, reaching forward to rest a palm on Sora’s shoulder. She didn’t move an inch, didn’t even twitch a muscle at his sympathetic gesture. “I wish things could be different, Sora, I really do. But we don’t have a choice.”
“We do have a choice,” she shot back through her clenched teeth. “Tell them no. We don’t need them.”
The chief shook his head and sighed. He withdrew his hand and placed it back in his lap, lacing his fingers together. “It’s not that simple, Sora,” he admonished gently. He could practically feel the anger radiating off of the girl, and although he didn’t want to anger her further, he had to at least try and make her see their options. “We have little choice now, Sora. The forest grows smaller every day, and we must seek out whatever allies we can. We must all make hard choices now, Sora.”
Sora surged to her feet with a vitriolic hiss, baring her teeth. She said nothing to the chief, simply fixed him with a rage-filled glare before she spun on her heel and left the elder’s cave, breathing hard. When she felt the cool brush of the outside air on her skin, she stopped, taking a few deep breaths to try and calm down. Her cat was pissed, pacing back and forth within her. She raked her claws against Sora, giving voice to her displeasure, and Sora doubled over with a grunt at the pain. Her cat was fighting hard, seeking an enemy to take her rage out on. Sora straightened, and, flexing her fingers, marched into the nearby woods.
Her tribe’s territory encompassed the rocky wall that now lay behind her, dotted with caves that were hidden well by the landscape. Sloped right up against the wall was a dense boreal forest, the canopy thick with a green canopy. The forest engulfed Sora as she entered, and a bit of her anger finally dissipated, only to return with a vengeance when she heard the distant caw of a crow. She swung towards the noise, baring her teeth. It was the damn crows that were the root of her problem.
While her chief’s words held some truth in them – the forest was growing smaller in that more and more people, and tribes, were moving in, encroaching on her tribe’s territory, but she did not agree with her chief’s solution. A mating contract… with the closest tribe, which happened to be a tribe of crow shifters. A mating contract that included Sora, and dictated that she’d mated to a crow within two moons.
Sora let out another low hiss and finally shifted, letting her cat free. Accompanied by the sound of cracking bones, Sora’s form vanished in a flash and shrunk into a that of a snow leopard. The cat took a moment to revel in being free, shaking out her dense gray, dappled coat. She stood a little under two feet high at the shoulder, gray coat decorated with darker rosette shapes. The cat’s paws were rather large, giving her impeccable balance on the snow-covered mountain rocks that were often her habitat. Along with her wide paws, the cat’s tail was nearly forty inches in length, once again giving her perfect balance on unsteady rocks. The cat lashed her tail, amber eyes scanning the tree line as though she were searching for the crow that had made that call a moment earlier. She bared a fang and then leapt forward, digging her claws into the bark of a tree before her, scaling the trunk in a few powerful leaps. The cat was on the hunt, and crow was on her menu tonight.
The cat bounded through the trees for a time, weaving her way through the tribe’s territory. Her anger slowly cooled off, though it didn’t vanish entirely. Countless scents danced across her awareness; she paused, opening her mouth to scent the air a little more, searching for some sort of prey. Her rounded ears flicked back and forth. A familiar scent danced past her and she turned her head, meeting the amber gaze of another snow leopard. She recognized this one and hissed playfully, flicking her tail. The other cat made rumbling noise and swatted at her. She leapt at him, and the two tumbled through a few layers of trees, wrestling playfully before they dropped back to the earth.
The female cat let out a soft purring sound, rubbing her cheek against the male’s. There was the sound of another animal approaching; the cat swung her head around, scenting the air with a flick of her ear. Another snow leopard; but somewhere in the distance she caught the scent of a crow. That only served to infuriate her again, but the male next to her – Thierry, her human half told her; a childhood friend, and the man she was supposed to mate with – sought to calm her again. With a huff, Sora laid down on the leaf-strewn ground, tail lashing back and forth rather forcefully.

{So I’m working on characters and was just curious to as when you mentioned China and Russia when describing the forest was that only regarding the climate or actual location as well? I was just wondering because I have a very random fascination with Central Asia.}
