rp samples & character research// WIP (posting this so i don't loose it since my wi-fi is spotty rn.)
sootfur: was born during bloodclan era, was trained to defend himself as a kit in case bloodclan made it all the way to camp. his father, whitestorm died when he was a kit. mentor was longtail, but that ended when longtail lost his eyes. new mentor was thornclaw. he's the one who scents the badger that kills willowpelt, so he probably is a good tracker/has a good sense of smell. willowpelt dies by taking his place/shoving him out of the way. i could see that having a big impact on his mental state, he still probably feels guilt over this. he's pretty vocal with his complaints, and harsh to cats outside of the clan. continues to fight the badgers even with broken back legs and it kills him- pretty heroic when put to the test. conclusions: very tight knit with his siblings, and probably very protective of them too. doesn't want to loose anyone else close to him. very open with his complaints, but still loyal at heart. harsh/distrustful towards outsiders. i feel like he still feels guilty about his mother's death and blames himself to the point of it fueling his more reckless/self-sacrificial tendencies.
sample: Sootfur crouched down, his eyes spotting movement in the undergrowth around him. He'd never been one for morning patrols, but it was hard to argue that they weren't effective when he'd already made two kills. Pricking his ears, he tried to listen for more rustling from the fern bush in front of him, but there was nothing. Tilting his head in slight confusion, he took a deep breath and inhaled, taking in the scents around him. It had rained earlier, muddying the trails left by previous prey, but that did nothing to stop the distinct scent of mouse from flooding his nose. Taking a step closer to the fern, he braced himself for the creature to notice him and run away. It did not. The mouse scurried out of the ferns and into a patch of sunlight, a piece of leaf still stuck in it's jaws. Tensing the muscles in his back legs, the tom took a deep breath and lunged forward, his claws extending toward the mouse. It didn't move fast enough. Dealing the killing blow, Sootfur dropped the carcass to the forest floor, feeling proud of himself. He would give it to his half-sister, Ferncloud, who'd been so busy with her kits in the past days. It was weird having kits in the clan again, but Larchkit, Hollykit, and Birchkit brought a new energy to camp. Part of him hoped that he and his siblings could mentor them when they became apprentices, but he knew there were more experienced warriors who would be chosen over them. Scrapping some of the earth over the kill, Sootfur headed back through the forest, hoping to catch up with the rest of the patrol. There was still more work to be done.
birchkit: not much info that's not dependent on events that happen later in the series. but fairly open and friendly- even to those outside of the clan as a kit (was friends with cody (kittypet), and applekit, toadkit, and marshkit (shadowclan)). he's described as a bit bossy after he receives his warrior name, but is a very proud and supportive father. joins the dark forest, but believes it's to help his clan and because of this training becomes more harsh and violent. conclusions: very friendly and open, but also very naive and trusting. easy to be manipulated, but good at heart. very open and welcoming to strangers and outsiders.
sample:
leafpaw: the calm to squirrelpaw's fire. wanted to be medicine cat from the get go. very quiet and patient. not sure if we're still doing the sister connection thing, but there's that. big bisexual energy she's very resolute in her faith/what starclan tells her. she's also pretty romantic which is what leads her to trouble with crowfeather alongside her curiosity towards new experiences. she's not one to raise her voice or snap at other when she's an apprentice and really only toughens up after having the three and giving them up. admits to hollypaw when training her that she too struggled with memorizing everything and learning treatments. conclusions: muck more meek and quiet in personality- not one to raise her voice. she trusts in starclan to the absolute but still struggles with the non-spiritual side of learning at the beginning of her apprenticeship. very naive and romantic, and harbors a deep curiosity towards life experiences that she can never have/enjoy.

(Sootfur's looks great, and based on that and the analysis on the others I'm gonna give a tentative yes to all of them [well, definite for Sootfur].)

[ I got a little carried away with Whitepaw's starter but I can most definitely write this much when I got the muse to. ]
Whitepaw - Camp Poke. Whitepaw wiggled around her nest some more, wanting to get a little more sleep before she woke for the day. Poke. She gritted her teeth as she felt something pierce her fur once again. She let out a soft sigh, feeling like getting more sleep was going to be useless. She pushed herself to up into sitting position, widening her jaws in a soft yawn, being mindful of her fellow apprentices. Her fur was a mess from rolling around in her sleep, sometimes she pitied her nest neighbor. Her green eyes flickered around, realizing that Shrewpaw was already gone again. She wrinkled her nose, not understanding why he was like. If Greystripe was smart, he would assign Shrewpaw to every dawn patrol since the young tom always seemed to be such a morning cat.
Whitepaw leaned down to down to quickly groom her fur into a presentable state, maybe Brackenfur is awake too. She frowned as she bit down on the burr was tangled on her side and pulled it off, before spatting it away from her nest. She hated when burrs got into her nest, hopefully it was accident and not a prank. She pushed herself to her paws, eager to see if her mentor was awake and if they were going to do any training today. She padded quickly out of the den, making sure her paw steps were quiet she wouldn't wake anyone.
Whitepaw took a deep breath of the crisp morning air, her green eyes gleaming bright as she looked around camp. Ah there is he is, she mused, noticing Shrewpaw farther away near the end of camp. She could see some warriors awake, like her mother and Longtail was out of the elder den. It was quiet. Although she knew that would change soon once dawn patrol got back and Graystripe would start to organize new patrols. Everyone would be awake and camp would be lively once again.

(lol you saw what I did with Longtail's starter. A few paragraphs to set a scene never hurts)
Shrewpaw noticed Whitepaw emerge from the apprentices' den, still looking sleepy and perhaps a bit irritable. This didn't deter Shrewpaw at all as he hopped to his paws and padded quickly and brightly over to the other apprentice, letting out a friendly mew as he approached.
"Good morning! Are any of the others stirring yet?" he asked, glancing towards the interior of the den. He was eager to get started with his day, and he was hoping that their mentors had some group training planned; Thornclaw had implied as such yesterday, albeit no promises were made. Either way, there was no sign of any of the apprentices' mentors yet, nor of the apprentices themselves besides Whitepaw. Not waiting for the white she-cat to answer his question, Shrewpaw shrugged. "Actually, it doesn't matter. They'll wake when they wake. How did you sleep?" he asked, settling down on the soft earth next to his denmate.

[ true lol ]
Whitepaw and Shrewpaw [ Aphelyon ]
Whitepaw's head swung in Shrewpaw's direction, as she heard his paws steps nearing. Her green eyes bright as she greeted her friend with a friendly purr of her own. Her tail swishing behind her in the air. "Good Morning," she chimed back with a jolly tone before shrugging her shoulder, her gaze flickering towards the apprentice den. She twitched her whiskers in faint amusement, no-one was awake but that wasn't surprising for this hour. The rest of the apprentice would wake eventually and was about to open her mouth to say that when Shrewpaw went on to continue speaking.
She shook her head, green eyes gleaming with laughter. "Maybe it will just be you and me today," Whitepaw joked, kneading the ground with paws. She didn't blame Shrewpaw, the white apprentice was eager to go out into the forest too. They were getting so close to be warriors. "Not bad," she mused before she made a face, recalling the burr that poking her in the side the whole morning, "There was burr in my nest though," she meowed, somewhat crossly. It wasn't often that Whitepaw was irritated but she extremely disliked when someone messed with her nest.

Shrewpaw furrowed his brow at the mention of the burr. "Hmm. Could've been Spiderpaw. Mousefur had him in the underbrush looking for mice the other day, and I know he came back covered in burrs." The brown tom twitched his whiskers in amusement at the thought of his brother with burrs in his pelt. "He tried to pick them all off, but maybe he missed one. Or, maybe it got in some other way. I couldn't say for sure." Shrewpaw shrugged.
(sorry it's a little short, comparatively)

(Starter) Brightheart padded around in camp, her pelt all dusty from being outside of the camp. She was looking for a sunny spot where she could wash herself. Padding forwards she sat down on a warm spot and smiled as the sun warmed her fur. Licking her paw and bringing it over her ear, she started to bathe herself, making her white and ginger fur sleek and glossy once more. She looked up and saw whitepaw padding around in camp. She was so proud of her daughter and it made her smile everyday to see her excited to go train or hunt. Once she was done she laid down, closing her one eye and letting the sounds of the clan fill her ears while she relaxed in the nice sun. She slowly let the sounds of the clan drift away. βCome on Brightpaw, we have to hunt down those mangy crow-food eating dogs and avenge our clanmate!β A long black and white Tom meowed before padding around the trees. She heard dogs in the distance, the barks and howls getting closer. She was nervous but followed the Tom. The Tom padded onto the rocks and leaped forwards. βCome out you mange pelts!β He called. The ground started to shake as multiple footsteps thundered out. Hiding in the bush she watched as swiftpaw suddenly got fearful. Re-watching the scene until the dogs sniffed her and started to pursue her. She laid on the rocks, half of her face in complete and utterly stinging pain. She watched swiftpaw. Soon seeing two faded figures walk away. She closed her eye, once again in complete darkness.Brightheart shot up, panting slowly. Looking around camp. No dogs. She remembered where she was and sighed, her one eye filled with one tear. Dragging her paw over her face she stood up and shook her pelt. She was fine. (Oof.)

Longtail had heard Brightheart's distressed breathing and come over to check on her, finding that she was asleep and appeared to be having a nightmare. He settled down next to her, laying his tail across her shoulders to try to comfort her until she woke. He had started slightly as she shot up, his pelt ruffling as he hopped away but quickly smoothing it back down.
"Are you alright?" he asked, tilting his head slightly.

(Thatβs okay.)
Looking at longtail she smiled softly. βIβm okay. Itβs just a bad dream.β She meowed, her voice calm, though it still was shaky. She looked at the tom, having to retire early mustβve hurt the tom. βIt was about swiftpaw.β She meowed and realized longtail couldβve had dreams like that since swiftpaw was his apprentice. She looked around, still dazed by the dream. She felt like her and longtail had some connection, both were connected to swiftpaw, and both had some sort of blindness. Sighing she turned and looked at longtail and sat down.

[ You are fine! You don't have to match my length every time. I don't expect it c; ]
Whitepaw and Shrewpaw - camp - [ Aphelyon ]
Whitepaw's brow furrowed into a light scowl. The white apprentice lashed her tail once and glanced over towards the apprentice den, with a twitch of her whiskers. "I will have to have a talk with him then," she meowed with a slight teasing edge. She was going to have words with Spiderpaw in the near future. She wasn't going to sleep with a burr every again if she had anything to do with it. She would even help him clean his fur next time. "Sometimes I don't know why he doesn't ask for help," she mused, rolling her eyes. Maybe it was just a tom thing.

Longtail was silent for a moment, furrowing his brow with thought or grief, or both, at the mention of his late apprentice. It had been a while, in all honesty, since the tabby tom had put much thought to him; after all, it had been seasons since Swiftpaw had been killed, and the Clan had moved on from his death, as it always did. Longtail had not moved on, precisely- there was a degree of guilt that had settled permanently in his chest, but that wasn't anything new. He carried his regrets- too many of them for a tom so young- like a nest full of eggs, or stones, or some other sort of heavy or fragile object. Instinctively, these thoughts made him look away from Brightheart, or at the very least avert his blind eyes from her general direction. He was somewhat glad he couldn't see her; the sight of her torn face, too, was one of his many regrets.
He voiced none of this, of course, merely swallowing his uncertainty before he turned back to her. He opened his mouth, but wasn't quite sure what to say. Finally, he sighed. "Perhaps getting out of camp would help you," he meowed. "Doing some hunting, or something of the sort. Fresh air and distraction." He wished that he could offer to go with her, and a part of him was tempted, but he knew that it was irresponsible to do so, and he had already caused enough harm, been enough of a burden. Instead, he tried to look at Brightheart reassuringly, or at the very least, have a reassuring demeanor towards her.
Shrewpaw twitched his whiskers at Whitepaw. "Maybe it's just a Spiderpaw thing," he replied. "You know he can be a bit stubborn. Not like me, all agreeable and helpful, and oh so humble," he joked, somewhat sticking his tongue out at his friend. At the mention of one of the other apprentices, though, he glanced over his shoulder at the den, his dark brown tail tip twitching impatiently. Turning the other way, he scanned the camp for any sign of their respective mentors, but it seemed the camp was still at least mostly abandoned. Seemed it was a late morning for most of the Clan.

Brightheart looked at longtail, sensing the hurt and sorrow from him. She watched his body language for a moment and glanced at her paws as he looked the other way. Watching, she felt as is a stone was lodged in her throat. She knew every other cat had moved on except some. She thought of the young Tom and slowly looked back up at longtail, shifting her paws slowly, her eyes dull with pain in the moment. Listening to the Tom. βThank you longtail.β She meowed. βIβm sorry for reminding you.β She added before brushing her tail on his flank. βWhatβs your favourite type of prey?β She asked after a moment of silence. βIβll bring some for you, fresh.β She meowed, her tone starting to warm as she slowly started to feel better. Her blue eye becoming more vivid and lively as she thought of hunting. Longtail was somewhat family as her mother was his half sibling, so it made her proud to hunt for her clan, especially her family.

Longtail let out a sort of gruff sigh, waving his tail at Brightheart's apology. "We were all haunted by it; you're not stirring anything up," he half-muttered, although he was pleased when she changed the subject. "I'm fond of birds. Sparrow is my favorite," he meowed more brightly."It's been a while since any of the apprentices have brought any back; I imagine they're all too noisy to stalk them," he added, twitching his whiskers. "So, I would certainly appreciate it, if you can mange to find one."

Brightheart smiled softly. βItβs finale! I shall catchβs the plumpest sparrow.β She meowed with a small chuckle. Looking at the entrance quickly and back at longtail. βYes, these apprenticesβ donβt know how to be quiet for a minute.β She agreed with a flicker of amusement in her gaze. She licked her lips and stood up. βIβll be back.β She meowed before brushing her tail on his flank and padding off to hunt.
(Skip like 20 mins so sheβd be back with some prey?)

(yeah sure. It's too bad none of the apprentices' mentors are claimed or we could send out a hunting party, give them all something to do :') )
Longtail let out a purr of amusement. "I have the utmost faith in you. Maybe you should take someone with you," he added. "Just in case." He swiveled his ears, listening around the camp for anyone else who might be awake, but he could only hear the quiet voices of a couple of the apprentices- unsure which ones- across the camp. He frowned. "Or.... perhaps not. Just be safe, then!" he added, a little concern and protectiveness in his voice. He had never been particularly close to Brightheart, but she had been a friend of Swiftpaw's and the two had been attacked by dogs together, and so in a way, Longtail felt partially responsible for making sure that she, at least, continued to live.

(Lol, Iβm getting my muse back up, I like rping already made cats xD. I might claim one soon ,see how Iβm feeling,)
Brightheart looked around camp, seemingly empty as all the cats of the clan slept, except for a few drowsy ones. Smiling as she made longtail feel better after that sad mess of a morning. Flicking her tail softly she padded off. βI will!β She replied and squeezed out of the entrance tunnel starting to scent for any prey nearby. Sometimes her pelt made it too hard to hunt anything, but after a bit of practice she was a very good hunter.
After about twenty minutes she came back, padding through the entrance with a plump sparrow in her jaws as well as a small mouse. She smiled as she knew longtail would be happy to finally have some fresh sparrow. βI got your favourite!βShe called half muffled because of the prey in her mouth. Holding her tail high she trotted toward long tail with gleaming blue eyes. She felt like an apprentice again.

Longtail had begun to doze again as he waited for Brightheart. He wasn't fond of sleeping the days away, and his paws itched to be doing anything, but such was his lot to be confined to camp and thus, he lazed in the sun and dozed. He roused slightly as the scent of fresh-kill flooded the camp, raising his head and blinking away the sleepiness from his blind eyes, just as Brightheart called out to him.
"Great job!" he purred as she trotted over and dropped the sparrow at his paws. The scent of the prey set his belly rumbling, and he was glad he didn't have to wait to eat. "Thank you for the fresh-kill," he meowed, both to Brightheart and to StarClan. "Would you like to eat with me?" he asked just the living she-cat beside him.

Brightheart smiled as longtail seemed to have brightened up. βYou're welcome.β She meowed with a smile and sat down beside the Tom. βOf course!β She meowed with a smile and warm purr. She was more than happy to accompany the Tom, after all, it must get tiring sitting in camp all day. She wouldβve offered to go for a walk with him, but she didnβt want to cause any trouble, two cats one eye? Impossible. She laid down and let longtail have the first couple bites.

Longtail let out a satisfied purr, digging into the sparrow. He took a couple of bites before pushing the fresh-kill towards Brightheart. Sharing such a small piece of prey wouldn't leave a lot of meat for him, but he was didn't mind; after all, he didn't need to eat very much anymore since he didn't do much but lay around the camp. "How are things out there?" he asked, somewhat to break the silence. "Is prey running well?"

( lowkey, might actually type spiderman instead of spiderpaw one of these days)
Whitepaw and Shrewpaw / Aphelyon
Whitepaw let out a laugh and nodded in agreement, "Sometimes I wonder how you and Spiderpaw are so different," she teased. She felt a brief pang of jealously, she sometimes she wished she had another sibling or rather siblings like Shrewpaw. Whitepaw was the only kit of Cloudtail and Brightheart. Sometimes she wished her parents would have another litter of kits so she wouldn't be alone in the family sense anymore.
She shook her head, focusing back on Shrewpaw, "Of course," she joked back. Shrewpaw was always so friendly, age had no changed that even as the two were close to being warriors. Whitepaw hoped that Firestar would name her along with Shrewpaw and Spiderpaw, she had always been with the two brothers. It would feel weird to be in a den without them. Whitepaw's green gaze followed Shrewpaw's towards the apprentice den and then back at him, "We could just leave and go hunting," she meowed with a twitch of whiskers, or practice their battle moves. Although the thought also made her uneasy, Whitepaw hated being scolded.

Brightheart smiled. βItβs great. Nice day out.β She meowed with a warm purr, curling her tail neatly across her paws. βItβs good, it was easy to catch the prey, they arenβt even paying attention. The sparrow practically walked into my paws.β She chuckled softly and blinked with her one eye. Her blue eyes were gleaming with happiness as she spent time with the old Tom, glad she could make him happy.

Shrewpaw narrowed his eyes thoughtfully at the suggestion that they leave. On the one paw, they might get scolded for leaving without their mentors' permission... but on the other paw, they were both nearly warriors, and if they left and returned safely with a decent catch- something he had no doubt was well within their abilities- it may be enough to prove that they were responsible enough that they no longer needed babysitting. "Well... what if we go somewhere safe, like the Great Sycamore? We stay away from the borders, don't get in any fights, and come back with some fresh-kill before anyone even really knows we're gone. Maybe our mentors won't be real pleased that we didn't ask, but it'll show that we can take initiative and be useful even without warriors breathing down our necks," he suggested. "We just have to make sure we tell someone where we're going, in case anyone needs to find us. That way they can't say we just ran off irresponsibly."
Longtail twitched his whiskers, letting out a somewhat wistful sigh. "Sounds nice," he replied. "The Clan certainly is not going hungry this season. It'll make everyone as spoiled as kittypets by the time leaf-fall comes around," he joked lightheartedly. He swiveled his ears towards the Great Rock, beneath which the leaders' den lay, but he didn't hear any movement. "Did any cat ever tell you what the Clan was like when Firestar joined it? It was greenleaf then, too, but nothing like this one."

Whitepaw and Shrewpaw / Aphelyon
Whitepaw shifted on her paws, flickering her tail as she mulled over the thought of leaving. Whitepaw didn't want to get scolded and the idea of her parents scolding her? She would probably cry. Cloudtail and Brightheart were easily the most important cats in her life and she never wanted to make her parents disappointed. She didn't often face her father's sharp tongue and she wasn't willing to face it anything soon.
Whitepaw brushed the thoughts away and nodded in agreement. "Great Syacmore would be great," she meowed with bright eyes. Shrewpaw made very strong points, it was safe and not close to the borders so none of the other clans would start pointless arguments. "I think they would be proud of us?" Whitepaw mused, feeling like it wasn't the best idea but they were almost warriors and it was important that they were willing to act without orders. Independence could be a good thing. "Who do you think we should tell?" she asked, as she glanced around the mostly empty camp.
