The darkness of home enclosed around and the path ahead was crowded by jeering shadows, dancing upon the trees avoiding the silver light that shimmered above. Faces blurred but they laughed, how they taunted, following from the forest with quickened pace. No matter how fast, their voices echoed around, following from dreams to waking world. There was no peace.
But one voice, the scent upon the air was sweet. It rose above them all, not following but leading through the thick undergrowth and over roots. No closer, no farther, the distance remained even for one thing kept them separated. A beating heart.
The woods released their forceful grip, those hideous shadows behind with nothing to attach to. Every step held an ache but it was far too late to stop now. In the mind, in the chest, in the stomach, beyond the pain was exhaustion. Peace called, the answer was certain.
Water held still, only the silver stars shimmered on its dark surface and beneath nothing was seen. There, it was there. No cold, a gentle warmth settled like a blanket over all of the anguish and silenced away the world around. Waiting, watching, hoping.
Strength was seeped from every limb but courage held strong. This time was not a time for fear but for love. The love that once captivated a life, taken too soon for greed and ambition. The water rippled, waves rolling from the middle towards the outer edges and a heart stuttered.
Death was not to be feared anymore. The guilty will find their fate, they will not rest in the forest and not walk with the stars. One day, one night, the score of life will be settled and sated with blood.
Willing to give it all, what ever it would take no matter what would happen now, it was the choice made. The haunting scent tighten its grasp, light fading from the pool under no reflection shone. Only the darkness. Embrace the insanity, let it be the guide to the truth and judgment.
Death was not an end.
It was immortal.
