Jace grinned faintly. "Good! I can't wait." She checked her watch, eyes suddenly widening. "Oh... Oh, boy." She started gathering her things. "I have to go. I'll be late." There was a change in her demeanor.

"No, no, it'll be fine. I can run. It's not that far." Jace smiled faintly, but her eyes held a bit of panic. She rolled her shoulders. "I'll see you tonight." she said simply before rushing out of the coffee shop.

Drake wanted to insist that it would be no problem for him to drive her back. It was the least he could do, after all, since he kept her away for so long. Yet there was something in her expression and the way she ran out of the shop that didn't sit well with him. Sure, she had a lot to prepare for, but there was panic in her face. Surely it would be okay if she was a few minutes late. His memories turned back to a time when he had feared returning home late, or even entering his home too slowly after playing outside. There had been absolute terror at times to the point where it had nearly frozen him in place if he knew he wasn't going to make it on time. Shaking his head, he tried to push those thoughts to the back of his mind. Those were years past. Chances were, there were just a lot of things needing to get done and too few people to do it. That was why she had to get going. Yet even as he told himself this, the cold stone that had settled in his stomach refused to leave. With nothing else to do, he cleaned up the table as best he could before going to pay for their drinks and fries.

(Sure.)
Like before, Drake had bought the VIP tickets to that night's show. The show had been amazing, just as good as it had been the last time he was there. Sure, a lot of the acts were the same, but he didn't mind. Jace's performance had been amazing as well. It had been one of the different acts, but he had already known that. That didn't mean it wasn't as awe inspiring as the first one he had seen. As he had before, he followed the group of VIP ticket holders at the very back, hoping to get a chance to speak with Jace before he had to leave. If nothing else, he wanted to compliment her dance.

Jace wasn't with the group of performers who had gathered to greet the guests. The ones who weren't in conversation with VIP ticket holders were exchanging whispers and shooting pitying glaces at the flap of the tent that served as the main office. One of them, the lion-tamer, was scoffing to the main trapeze artist. "Serves her right, sneaking off like she did. She shouldn't have tried to make connections with the outside world. It's not like she'll ever find someone who can look past her freak abilities."

The lion tamer glanced up. "Jace? Oh, she's in with the boss at the moment. He found somethin' out about her or somethin'." They shrugged. "She's probably gonna try to convince him to let her out. 'Aint gonna happen, most likely. Anythin' else I can do ya for?" They tilted their head to the right slightly, blinking slowly.

"Well, if you wanna try to talk him out of his rage, they're in the tent. Fair warning though, be careful. Might be a flying chair or two." The lion tamer, Jordyn, crossed their arms. "Good luck, you'll need it."

There was a lot of noise coming from inside. Crashing, sobbing noises, and much more. A chair hit the side of the tent hard. A gruff male voice yelled, "Get back down here, freak!!" And basically general hubbub.

A large man dressed in black leather glared over at Drake as he entered. "What do you need? Make it snappy." He had a sort of Brooklyn accent. Jace had somehow attached herself to the fabric at the very top of the tent; she wasn't even holding on to a pole. Her hands and feet just seemed to stick to it.

Drake spotted the man and knew that this was not someone he wanted to be speaking with. It was a wonder that he had been able to keep his voice steady when he spoke. "I came here to apologize and make things right," he told him. As he did, he tried to look around for Jace. She was nowhere to be found on the floor of the tent, where he had expected her to be. Yet something made him glance up. There, clinging to the fabric by what he could only assume was magic, was Jace. He'd worry about that later. For now, he looked back to the man. "I was the one who kept Jace out so late. It wasn't her fault. She didn't even want to meet with me, but I persuaded her to go. I didn't keep an eye on the time, even though I knew there was a show tonight. It wasn't her fault she was late, but mine. I'm sorry if it caused any inconvenience."

The man huffed. "Doesn't excuse what she did, I hope you know that, kid." he growled. "I gotta make sure she learns her lesson. She shouldn't have expected you to keep track of the time." Jace looked at Drake, her eyes widening. She mouthed, Don't. Just the one word. Her face was littered with more bruises than had been there before, but dread hung in her eyes. She wasn't just fearful for herself.

The man clenched his fists. "She still should have known better! I raised her since she was five years old, and this is the thanks I get? Her family abandoned her in a park! I took her in, kept her fed, taught her to control her power!" Jace slipped with a small yelp, holding on by one hand. If she was to fall, she could easily land on her feet, but then she would have to face the boss again.

The man paused for one, two, three seconds, then unclenched his fist, expression going from vengeful to broken within seconds. He let out a shuddering breath and turned away. "Take her out of here. Please." he murmured. Jace dropped to the ground, landing neatly on her feet. Confusion crossed her face, but she said nothing.

Jace shot Drake a grateful look as he led her out. She nodded in response to his question. "It's really not his fault, Drake. He thinks he's being a good parent. His dad did the same to him." she explained quietly. Her eyes were clear, shining a little. "He's really trying." She squared her shoulders, grasping her upper right arm with her left hand.

Drake listened to her words with a small sense of disbelief. She thought this was okay? She was defending him. Hadn't he done the same thing, though? Listed off reasons as to why his father was constantly angry at him, always apologized for things that he couldn't have done anything about. He gently grabbed Jace's face in his hands so she would look him in the eye. "This is not good parenting," he said, struggling to keep his voice low. He wanted to shout at her, not because he was mad, but because he wanted her to know that this line of thinking was poisonous. His voice was also laced with a bitterness that came from his own past experiences. "Listen to me, Jace. I don't care what he might have told you to reason his actions, but that does not make him right. He chose to be that way. He didn't have to be, but he did. If he was trying, than you wouldn't have been hanging from the ceiling to get away."

Jace paused to listen, then shook her head. "Drake, he had been scared half to death by my disappearance. Look, my abilities... They don't come cheap. He's the one who opened his home when everyone else shunned me. It's hard to let go of that. Surely you understand..." She clasped her hands. "If he doesn't think I'm ready for the real world, then I don't think I am either."
