ok ok so - basically it's pokemon, but different.
the idea is that we start in a new region, both with starter trainers and with gym leaders. it'll probably be a small group rp, based on the plot line. essentially, what's happening is that the bad guy team is a group of researchers who want to understand why certain pokemon have the typing they do. they do all these experiments, and end up finding a way to change the typing of pokemon. so now you have pokemon running around that should be one type, but instead they're something completely different.

Alright! Can you give me a brief description of the region? Here are the most important things I need to know about it. Is it based of a real life place? Is it land locked or an island? Are there any outlying islands? What's the climate like? How mountainous is it? How many towns or cities are there?
If you already have an idea for the shape or layout of the region would you mind giving me a quick sketch? Just so I could get an idea for the shape of the region and the layout of locations and routes.

i think i want it to be similar to australia, i think, where it's mostly one large island, but with a few smaller outlying islands, i think centered in the northern half of the larger island. it's definitely more temperate though, with a mountainous region in the northeastern area, like really close to what would be the beach. i see a lot of beach areas, but not all are major towns( i think there's gonna be eight major cities, and like three or four smaller villages, and the pokemon league will be located on the mountain. the closer you get to the mountain, the more forested and cool/dry i think, so the beachy areas will be more warm and humid. definitely a lot of forest towards the center-most part of the island

Yeah I understood it. But I have quite a few more questions. What shape would you like the main island be? Should it be oblong or more rounded? What's the size ratio of the islands? Would it be like the large island compered to the mainland in the first example or like the small island in the second? I could do something like one large island and two small ones. Also if you know a real life island that you like so I could base the shape of the main island off of it I would appreciate you telling me. It would make things easier.

hmmm - australia to me is more rounded, but with the dips in to create like coves and stuff, so i think more like that? i definitely am basing most of this off of actual australia if you can't tell xD i think it's more like the one large main island, with two or so smaller ones (think hawaii compared to the us) and one or two more medium islands (i guess a halfway point if possible?)

Okay I have the main island in three sizes and three shapes. Let me know what size and what shape you want. Don't worry about the shapes of the small islands since they're just placeholders. Don't be afraid to tell me if you're not a fan of anything I showed you.

Yeah I can do that! They were more there for size comparison. To get some more distance between them they would probably spread out towards either the northeast or northwest. That would also help keep the map feel like there's less empty space. Would you like me to flip the main island or rotate it at all? If you want me to rotate it the island's shape will get warped a little. Also which direction do you want the islands to go towards: east or west?

Okay! I'm going to take a bit of a break and then I'll create some more island shapes that you can decide what size you want them to be. After that I'll put together a few layouts for you to chose from. Anything else we should wait to finish until we have everything else planned out. That way we can change the map so the geography doesn't cause any issues with the pacing or flow of the RP. I'll have to know quite a bit about where you want to take the rp in order to make a good map.

alrighty! thank you for your help! i'm still working out the kinks of everything, but i know for the most part i want it to follow the journey of the starter trainers, so the easier areas should definitely come first...

One thing I've learned about making maps for Pokémon rps is that you have to have an idea of the region nailed down before you put on the finishing touches. I'll go ahead and list some of things you'll need to know before we start finishing the map.
First you'll want to know where you want cities/towns and locations at and how many you need. To start you should figure out how many you want to distribute on each island.
Second you'll want to figure out the theming of each city/town and location. A good way to do this to base it off what type of gym is located there. You can also theme locations based off what type of Pokémon are available there. For example you could have a large beach with alot of ground types or a cold island with ice types.
Third you'll want to figure what order to have the locations encountered. For example if your going to have a dragon themed gym you should place an area where you can find dragon, ice, or fairy type Pokémon before it. Just try not to put it directly before a gym.
The biggest tip I can give you is to look back on the games and see how they do it. When you create a brand new region you're essentially creating a brand new game after all.
So just try and keep this in mind and maybe create a rough sketch of the main island and the routes and locations. Visualizing it makes it much easier to decide what goes where.

Sorry ♚ ʀᴇɪɴᴇ ɴᴜɪᴛ ♚, I ended up taking a break from the forums so I missed this. My laptop is in for repairs right now so I won't be able to work on it for awhile. Also I feel like I had more posts here lol. Anyways once I get my laptop back I can start working on it again. If you're still interested. Also I might still finish it anyways because I'm suffering a bit of withdrawal from not working on any lol

I might be able to start from scratch using the photo's I already have uploaded here. I'm borrowing my sister's laptop since she also has a desktop and she has GIMP on it. It'll be a pain to set up all my palettes again and get the right colors but it should be doable. I could even get started today.
