Rhy is honestly going to feel so attacked, but so embarrassed because he is beyond clueless. XD Also I think ‘dog person’ is the best noun for a historical vet.)

Rhykaer Lovell "The moon is a friend for the lonesome to talk to." - Carl Sandburg ✠ ✠ ✠ ✠ ✠
Hand on the spine of a book, Rhy opened his mouth to say something, eyebrows drawn. He closed it soon after and thinking, hummed quietly. It was a moment of silence and a look towards the shorter boy that broke the prince’s thought process, “Well I suppose you are quite right. I could just bring Wyndla here. I wouldn’t want to pull her away from her duties at the palace though. She’s responsible for much more than my dogs unfortunately.”
And by the time she made it here, the male might be beyond help.
Rhykaer looked back at his hand on the spine of the book, embarrassment flushing his face. He had seen the slight bewildered, almost judging look in the boys eyes. Kai had done a fantastic job at hiding the comments, but when one lived to read people, one picked up on the subtle hints. And then maybe he was looking too hard. Maybe he had seen what he was looking to find. It was possible that he had misunderstood. He was wrong so often he was hesitant to judge for sure.
“I don’t believe it is an injury. I checked him for that this morning and the kennel workers said they hadn’t seen any obvious markings on any of the other animals.” Rhy glanced towards the ceiling in thought. “But I suppose poisoning is a valid option. I wasn’t there when they ate this morning... And I wouldn’t know how to treat him even if he had been poisoned. I suppose finding a healer would be the best option, yes.”
The embarrassment at his lack of knowledge and the boys obvious understanding was deep seated. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to know, but more that he had just never had to. He felt sheltered in all the wrong ways; what hunter didn’t know how to diagnose their own hunting dog? A hunter that had never needed to treat his own mutts. Wyndla would be more than disappointed in him.
He swallowed thickly and withdrew his hand from the shelf. Rhy turned and waved the boy off, “I wouldn’t want to take up any more of your time. You are welcome to come, but please don’t feel obligated.”
He had already probably heard enough of his problematic situation. Rhy didn’t want to make the boy think that he completely helpless.

--kai nicollier ; prince of calais
Rhykaer seemed troubled by all this--not the notion that his dog could have been poisoned, but that he had not realized sooner. He didn't look angry, which was nice; Kai hated people who grew indignant in the face of their ignorance since it made them look even worse, even more idiotic. And he wasn't absolutely destroyed by it; Kai also hated when people wallowed in their own self pity and grew morose. Either way, no solution was created, which was the base of his immense dislike. It was childish. Rhykaer wasn't being childish--he obviously recognized his mistakes.
When Kai said 'injury' he meant internally, which may also go along with a dog eating something they shouldn't. But poisoning had a better chance of recovery considering any invasive medical procedure would not be performed on a dog. Very few doctors could do it, and they only knew the human body. Humans knew how to recover well, how to sit still and listen, whereas dogs hated stagnancy. Hopefully it was poisoning.
"Mm, that's up to you," Kai said in response to him coming along. "I don't have much else to do, but I will send a message to my guards to find someone suitable in town. If you'll excuse me?" he asked politely, taking the books with him as he left. Kai didn't take long, though, it was just giving a message to a rider and coming back, though now the books were gone. He had given them to someone to put in his rooms. "Would you like me to come with while we wait for a healer?"

Rhykaer Lovell "The moon is a friend for the lonesome to talk to." - Carl Sandburg ✠ ✠ ✠ ✠ ✠
“Oh, of course. I’ll be here.” Rhykaer watched as the prince left after excusing himself. He waited until he was out of sight and earshot before releasing a breath he didn’t know he had been holding. Allowing himself the chance to sit for a moment and think, Rhykaer gathered his tools and sketchbook. He stuffed the leather bond book in his inner jacket pocket. The ink glass was empty so he simply slipped the tiny glass plug into the top and placed it in his outer pocket. He would refill it later. After the kennels and he made more a fool of himself.
Rhykaer felt the urge to turn down the boys offer, not because he didn’t seem nice but because of his own embarrassment. He sighed. No, he couldn’t do such a thing now. He shouldn’t have talked about it so fervently if he didn’t want the boy to extend the offer to come along. The prince was stuck now, but... he wasn’t particularly mad about the new development.
The Academy had provided him with enough loneliness for a lifetime in the past few days. His only companions had been his hunting dogs and now one was sick. How was he going to turn down the one person who had given him the time of day? Even if the boy was a reluctant participant, Rhy couldn’t help but feel happy someone was going to share the burden.Well not really share because they were still his problem and blessing. He would never push the dogs into someone else. It simply wasn’t an option anymore. Knowledge demanded him to learn and adapt.
And learning how to make friends was something that would require a little work.
When Kai returned, Rhy greeted him with a soft smile, “You are more than welcome to come if you want. Some company would be nice in fact.” He started out of the library before he looked over his shoulder at the boy who followed him. “Thank you. For summoning the healer and listening.”

--kai nicollier ; prince of calais
It didn't matter whether or not Kai cared--he did,but that wasn't the point--because this was a fantastic distraction that didn't rely on Kai's abilities to stop thinking about something he was obsessing over. It was sure as hell better than doing anything alone, it was just unfortunate a dog had to fall ill for him to find something to do; Kai never liked seeing sick animals, especially under human care. We were supposed to prevent this.
He followed after Rhykaer and smiled at the compliment, though a little abashedly. He knew how to take thanks and admiration in his own Court and in diplomatic situations, but this was more genuine than that and Kai felt a little unprepared. It was something he was going to have to work on--many cultures took embarrassment at a compliment as weakness or as a refusal and he didn't want to convey that.
If he thought about it, his life was a bit tiring.
"Of course," he replied, straightening his posture after the minor slump that occurred with the thanks. And then, a little out of position for himself, Kai said, "Dogs are easier to love than people." Not that he wouldn't get a healer for another person, but he wouldn't say he would be particularly eager to come along.

Rhykaer Lovell "The moon is a friend for the lonesome to talk to." - Carl Sandburg ✠ ✠ ✠ ✠ ✠
Rhykaer blinked at the blanket statement before a surprised, but agreeing smile tipped the corners of his lips, "They are, aren't they?"
The animals loved unconditionally and unfaltering. Even though the pain, the sick male had wagged his tail with the sleepy strength he had left. They never failed; not in the ways that counted anyway. Of course, raising them to not chew on his shoes and pee on this riding gear had been tough. Then awarding for the days he went out to hunt and they brought back the birds he had shot form the sky. Tail wagging and teeth gentle, they had never failed him.
The prince couldn't help but think he had failed them. As they made their way to the kennels, rounding corners and crossing courtyards, Rhy debated the best way to send word to Wyndla. He would do good to learn from her correspondence and books. She had always been willing to teach him, but he had neglected the opportunities. He had Kai to think for providing him the energy to learn.
Rhykaer pushed the door open to the kennels. He was immediately greeted with the sounds of excited dogs, ready to go for a walk or a hunt. The inside was cooled with a cross ventilation system. It utilized the cool northern winds to push the heat out. He breathed in the scent of canine. The dogs he passed looked different from his Vawhili born breed, but they all had the distinctive silly canine tongues and tails.
"This way," he lead Kai around the corner to another row of well kept and spacious kennels. The royal dogs had more room and luxury than some commoners. The fact would make him sad if dwelled on for too long. The kennel set in front of them erupted with energy as the dogs recognized their owner. Rhy pushed opened the door and laughed as he was basically mobbed. He looked back with amusement. "Enter at your own risk."
He whistled at the dogs and most of them stepped back in obedience, but the young ones still had much to learn. Vawhili dogs were large, but sleek with excellent noses and hearing. Large paws adapted for the snowy pines of his homeland, they were the perfect breed in his opinion. Rhy rubbed the ear of a yearling and smiled at the way her tongue rolled from her mouth, "The male - Faegan - is in the room behind this one."
