Reverie did his best to disguise his disappointment. He understood, of course, but he couldn't deny that it would have been nice to show them around. Different sorts of magic worked in different ways, however, and he was aware that the real world and his own were vastly far apart. "That makes sense. . . You're real yourself, so it'd be. . ." He trailed off mid-sentence, seemingly lost in another thought before he had even finished the first one. He shook his head to clear it. "Ah, well, it's alright. And you're right. . . I'm not sure what going from dream to dream that isn't your own would do to your sleep schedule!" Reverie startled when they spoke up again, and he tilted his head in earnest curiosity. "That's true!" He said with a thoughtful hum. "When it comes to someone else's, I mostly change it in little ways - that way it doesn't startle or scare them." He mulled it over as he tried to figure out how to explain. "It's mostly just making bad dreams turn into something much more comforting, you know? There's one I live in myself, though, that I can mess around with a lot more. . . Making people appear, though, I haven't ever tried. . .," He stopped walking a second, tilting his head downward and letting a little flower spring up from the ground. "I don't know how it would work, uhm. . . If I made you appear, it might not be you. It's like when you dream of someone and they sound, act, and look like them, but the real person is asleep somewhere else in the world. You're magic, though, and travel a lot yourself, so maybe it would be different?"

"I don't mean to let you down. It just works differently for me, unfortunately..." Raven looked down towards the flower that sprouted between the stones in the path. They raised a hand to their chin in thought. "I see. So, in theory, two people can't have the same dream at once?" Their gaze drifted to disappointment, before returning a degree more serious. "Our magic could very well have some overlap, however..." Raven shook their head to clear their thoughts. "If you don't mind me asking, what do you know you can do?" They raised an eyebrow momentarily. "I've never met anyone with this kind of ability, and I'm just curious about what it entails..."

Smiling apologetically, Reverie gave them a good-natured pat on the shoulder. "You haven't let me down, please don't worry! Of course I would've liked to show you everything, but I understand we have different kinds of magic." He nodded as they went on, feeling a flicker of guilt at the disappointment crossing their expression. "Mhm. Dreams are. . . Weird. You could have the same exact dream as someone else, and even see each other there, but it probably wouldn't be the same dream. I hope I'm making. . . Any sense, uhm - " He broke off and averted his gaze. "I haven't ever explained it, really, it's just one of those things you. . . Grow around." He took in a breath and hummed in thought. "It could! We would have to figure it out, but it'd be nice to see how it might." Reverie looked rather shy as Raven continued. "Uhm, well - " He held his palm up to them, which was subtly trembling, and gestured to it vaguely as another little plant sprouted from the middle and wound its way around his sweater sleeve. "Stuff like that, and, uhm - you already know about changing dreams. I could make this one here look. . . Completely different, I think. Or just. . . Make little changes here and there." He felt it might be rude to do any meddling with Raven's dream, however, and simply stumbled through his thoughts to continue. "Traveling between them, too. I can visit just about any, although I can't do the same with the, uhm, waking world. It's why I was so blurry when we first met - it's hard to stay there!" He reached up again and scratched at one of the twitching ears on his head - a nervous habit. "And - oh! There's a dream, sort of, that I've made - it's where I live. I don't know how you would get there, but you're always welcome! But, uhm, I'm sorry for rambling a little - tell me about what you can do, if you like!" He flashed them a bright smile as he paused to breathe. "I'm curious about your abilities, too!"

Raven listened intently and watched as Reverie humbly demonstrated and explained his ability. "I see..." They repeated themselves, furrowing their brow. "I've heard of similar things... though I doubt I could find the place you've made yourself. Now that you've visited my dream, could you find me here again later? Or better yet, you could bring me to your dream next time."
They smiled and nodded lightly in acknowledgement. "I can travel between places too, just not the same way you can." They stared up at the sky for a moment, pointing up towards it. "Usually, when the moon is full like this, I can channel the light it gives off into this necklace here." Raven then picked up a small, silver, crescent-shaped charm off their chest, one that glinted under the warm rustic light. "Using that, I can go pretty much anywhere I want. Well... in a manner of speaking. With a lot of concentration, I can go somewhere nearby that I know of already..." They paused, thinking on their next words. "Or, a little more freely, I can go to an entirely different world from my current one... but I never know where I'll end up."
Raven let their gaze fall on seemingly nothing for quite a while before they continued their sentence. "If the moon isn't full, I can still do all of that, but I end up pretty badly injured from the shift. You remember, don't you? I brought it up when you asked how I had gotten there. I initially regretted being so hasty, but..." They took a deep breath and sighed. "It's strange, I don't usually stay in one place for this long. I'm not sure what's keeping me." They shrugged off their brief wistfulness and turned back to face Reverie. "I can do some other magic, but nothing interesting. Just combat stuff, which I thankfully haven't been using too much recently... and I believe that's about it."

Reverie nodded subtly. "Oh. . . That's understandable, though." He laughed to himself, only the slightest droop to his ears. "It's basically just a dream itself, only, uhm, tangible I think is the word, to me." At the mention of their dream, though he quickly perked up again. "Mhm! So long as you're asleep and dreaming, I can visit you pretty easily. I haven't. . . Tried to bring anyone there before, and if all else fails, I could probably just show you how it looks, at least!" Ears perked, Reverie listened to Raven's explanation about their powers with rapt attention. "That's amazing!" He breathed. He peered closely at their necklace, fascinated by the way it shimmered in the bright moonlight. "I knew you could travel, but genuinely, Raven, that's such an interesting power!" In the small moments of silence that followed, Reverie took the time to simply look around and let his thoughts drift. As they spoke up again, he nearly jumped, but his expression quickly morphed from surprise to sympathy. "I remember. . . I'm glad you've found a place you're comfortable staying, but be more careful, alright?" He turned to them and smiled. "And you never know - maybe you've found a home there! Have you thought about staying for longer?" "Well, I'm thankful you haven't had to fight or anything like that," he said with a relieved slump of his shoulders. "It's really, really something though, isn't it? It must've taken so long to get the hang of powers like that - that's amazing!"

"I'm glad you think so," Raven replied, with a hint of amusement in their voice. "I don't often get the chance to, well... talk about it. Surely you understand, though."
After listening to Reverie's comments, they pondered a response in silence for a moment. "I'm not sure. Every time I consider leaving for somewhere else, I just can't bring myself to... So, in a way, I suppose I have thought about it. Does that make sense?" They crossed their arms in front of them contemplatively. "It's like someone..." They paused and raised an eyebrow. "Something, rather, is keeping me there." Raven scoffed as they heard themselves speak. "It doesn't matter, really. I guess it's just a nice change of pace from what I'm used to, is all."
They cracked a smile and held a hand up to their pendant. "It definitely took a long time to fully grasp it. Years, in fact — let alone how long it took to do it consistently..."

Reverie smiled at them, an understanding little shine to his eyes. "I do! I don't really get the chance to talk to anyone like this either, really." He laughed again; soft, quiet, and tinged with something that may have been melancholy. "I think most of the people I meet think I'm a figment of their imagination."
He nodded, tilting his head and in a gentle, understanding sort of manner. "It makes sense," he said while clasping his hands together in front of him, "and there's nothing wrong with having somewhere you want to stay. Even if you go other places, you could always go back there, too." He paused and flashed them a quick smile at the 'someone', but let them continue. "It sounds like it is." He tugged at the ends of the small, frayed scarf around his neck. "Sometimes a nice change is good. . . Oh!" His eyes widened as a thought struck him, and as he turned to stare up at Raven, he looked somewhat embarrassed. "I can't believe I forgot to ask - how is Clive doing since we all last met? I, uhm. . . He seemed a little nervous towards the end there. . ."
"Years, wow!" Reverie gasped, tilting his head to look at the pendant again. His own abilities being so different, it was hard to wrap his head around Raven's own - as well as difficult not to be in awe of the sheer dedication it must have taken to get the hang of them. "If you're ever able to sometime, I'd love to see how they work."

Raven suppressed a sympathetic frown, before trying the best they could to be reassuring.
"Well... if it helps, you're very real to me."
They gave some thought to what Reverie suggested before they replied. "You're right. I just never... have stayed anywhere before. It's somewhat of a foreign concept to me..." As he continued, their grave demeanor seemed to soften slightly. "Oh, Clive? He's doing alright. Better, for sure. It's just that unlike you and I, he's very... normal. I think he was just feeling shy." They chuckled to themselves briefly, and idly twirled their dark hair through their fingers as they spoke. "He's just been acting strange lately in general, even before you visited... I'm not sure what's with him, but I don't think it's anything personal. I'm sure he'd like to talk to you again sometime."
"It's nothing too special," Raven added modestly. "And besides, I wouldn't have much of anywhere to go here. But next time you stop by, I could certainly try to show you them in action, if you'd like."

"Awh, of course it helps!" Reverie chirped back at them, the last bits of sadness that clung to him dissolving like mist. "It's always nice to have a genuine friend."
He smiled, a soft yet faraway look on his face. "I know what you mean - sort of. Anything can be scary when it's new." He folded his hands again, holding them steadily in front of himself. He figured it might be rude to keep fidgeting with everything he could find, even in the middle of a conversation. "Whether you choose to stay or explore, though, I'm sure you'll always have a home to return to there, if you want to! And I'll be cheering you on, of course." As Raven updated him about Clive's wellbeing, Reverie felt a deep rush of sympathy for him. He knew what it was like to feel overwhelmed and shy in a situation, and silently wished him well. "I'm glad to hear he's doing better. . . Him being normal, though," Reverie broke off in a very obviously nervous laugh, "He must've thought I looked a little weird." Trying to shake off his own nerves and not dwell, he tilted his head curiously as Raven continued. "Strange. . .? Is he alright? If you're alright doing so, you could ask him if he's okay. . . Could he be too shy to say he isn't feeling well or something?" Reverie let the thought settle in his mind to worry over later (as he always did), but let himself brighten up. "I'd love to meet up with the both of you again! If it's alright with you, I might stick to dreams for a little while, though. Uhm, being in the real world is. . . It can be a lot."
"I'm sure it's special," He began, but nodded in quiet acknowledgement when Raven went on. "That's true. . . I guess they wouldn't work the same in a dream. Next time for sure, though!"

"I'm sure he didn't judge you too much," Raven noted. "I mean, I certainly don't fit in either. You know, people generally don't have fluorescent eyes in day-to-day life. Shocking, I know." They smirked to themselves before shaking their head. "I'm just saying, he's probably used to strange things happening by now. I wouldn't worry, if I were you."
As the conversation continued, their facial expression shifted slightly, quickly going from lighthearted amusement to something a little more melancholy. "I've asked, but he never tells me anything." Their eyes trailed down to the path in front of them. "He says he's fine, but sometimes he can get a bit twitchy. It's just hard to tell when it comes to him, what's normal and what isn't... " Raven shrugged, promptly changing the topic as soon as they could. "I don't mind at all. I can only imagine how hard it is to stay material for long periods of time." They looked off into the distance for a moment in thought. "I'm not sure how it works for you, but... If you really wanted to visit, you could always just go to his dream instead. After all, I'm sure it's not far from here."

Reverie laughed, seemingly a little more relaxed after Raven's reassurances. "I guess you're right," he murmured. "It's nice to know we're the same in that regard, though - plus, fluorescent eyes are pretty cool, I'd think!" He tilted his head from side to side, a small gesture just to say he was thinking on something. "That's true. . . I'm thankful, then! Plus, he didn't seem the type to judge anyone unkindly in the fist place."
As Raven explained, Reverie couldn't help the soft, dismayed look on his face. He reached up to pat a supportive hand on their shoulder. "He might not be comfortable saying what's on his mind," he began, struggling for the right thing to say. "I don't know him well enough to understand his moods, but it might do some good just to keep him company during them, at least." He let out an anxious little sigh. "I know it isn't right for me to meddle in things like that, though, so I'll just keep you both in good thoughts. I hope everything turns out alright."
Reverie nodded at Raven's comment. "It can get to be really tiring, but it is. . . Nice to visit sometimes, though." He twitched an ear in acknowledgement, quiet for a moment as he mulled over their next words. "I could," he said with the tone of someone who was most definitely thinking out loud, "but I wouldn't be able to visit you both at the same time. . .," He trailed off and stared towards the distance. "I will probably visit him later sometime, though. It'll be nice to see how he's doing, too!" He smiled, then, having perked right back up again at the realization he would be able to visit each of his friends without braving the waking world again so soon.

"Well," they added, "I don't know if I would give him that. He's nice, definitely... but he's not a total pushover. If you give off a bad vibe, he's sure to say something about it." Raven paused, before returning to their usual crooked smile. "Which, I suppose, is all the more reason why you have nothing to worry about!"
They were, at first, slightly taken aback by Reverie touching their shoulder — but, as he went on, they listened intently to what he had to say. "I see. No, you're right. I've tried not to bother him too much, but..." Their sentence trailed off and the words hung in the air. "Well... I appreciate it, regardless."
Raven casually brushed a hand through their hair for a moment, humming quietly in thought. "Maybe not," they began, "but, we could still run into each other — even if it isn't really me." "If you do ever visit, I'm sure he would like that." They stopped their train of thought rather suddenly and began to look troubled. "Though, I'm not sure if it'll be the most pleasant place you've ever had to visit." They murmured their words, quickly shook it off, and returned to their previous sentence. "But besides that, it would be a nice surprise, certainly."

Reverie hummed. "That's not a bad thing, though - " He broke off to pluck at one of the plants in his hair. "It's good to be able to tell when someone isn't very. . . Kind." At the last comment Raven tacked on, however, Reverie grinned back at them. "Well, I'm glad to hear! It truly does take some tension off my shoulders to know."
Reverie flashed an apologetic look for startling them. "I'm sure you wouldn't be a bother, you know," He smiled, voice quiet as he went on. "Sometimes, all it takes is just sitting next to him when you notice he's feeling down, or maybe you could invite him out for a walk." He offered a lighthearted smile in an attempt to ease any tension. "Sad times don't last forever, though, so just stick with him and you both will see things start to brighten up."
He stayed silent to think, only mumbling a few sparse little words to himself. "That's true," he finally said. "And, either way, I'll hopefully make time to visit you both a good amount now." Reverie's smile at their words quickly shifted into a tired, saddened expression. "If it's nightmares, you mean," He quieted a moment to fold his hands together again and stare up towards the night sky, "I'm no stranger to visiting them." The fluffy ears atop his head were folding back as he continued, although he didn't seem keen on elaborating. "I'll probably be able to visit him sometime tonight, though, and I'll try to do my best to help him, at least." He shook his head to clear any unpleasant thoughts afterward. "But, at any rate! I'm thankful to hear it'll be a nice surprise, and I'll be glad to catch up with him again."

Raven averted their gaze for a while, listening intently to the sound of Reverie's voice and the wind blowing through the trees around them. They stared down at the golden leaves scattered on the ground, lit only by the candlelight and the glow of the moon. They didn't seem to respond to anything in particular, but they nodded in acknowledgment, taking his advice to heart - and respectfully staying silent about more personal matters.
"Well," they finally stated as they turned their head, "If you're going... it certainly was nice to see you." Raven stopped walking and smiled, gentle yet inquisitive.

Once his own words faded into the cool night air, Reverie heaved a contented sigh and nodded at Raven's final comment. He returned their smile easily, although there was a misty-eyed quality to it. He never fared well with goodbyes, even when in truth, he was doing the equivalent of tearing up at the end of a school day in the middle of the week. "It was nice to see you, too!" The smile he still wore brightened. "Take care, and I promise to visit again soon, sometime." He took a few steps forward, turned back to them, and waved. "And sleep well!" He chirped, the words seemingly dissolving with him as he disappeared in the hazy blink of an eye. ---------------------------- skip ---------------------------- Just as quickly as he vanished, Reverie was back to his odd, mismatched animal form, as well as the strange limbo that resided between the dreams he wandered. He bounded forwards, paws scattering starlight like water droplets that had nowhere to fall. He watched them shimmer and disperse through the air, taking a quiet moment to marvel at the scenery once more. Before he had time to be distracted further, however, he hurried onward. While Reverie did not arrive right away (he had a few extra stops to make, of course), he steadily made his way towards what he intended, or hoped, was Clive's own dream.

As Raven waved and bid him farewell, they found themselves wondering how much the two of them really did have in common. To always be moving from place to place, never settling down for long — and yet, at the same time, they lived so very differently. As a puff of mist vanished in the autumn breeze, Raven turned around and kept walking down their dark, empty road... making sure to remember this dream in the morning.
~~~Skip~~~
Somewhere else in time, as the light morning sun rises on the horizon... there exists a simple, unidentified street with a brick road. A cozy little intersection, with tall buildings surrounding it. A sense of eerie familiarity fills the air here — something unspoken, yet almost palpable. A few feet away, someone sits alone at a table, one inside a small café. His tawny brown hair covers most of his face, but as he stares down at the paper in front of him, pen in hand... it's hard to tell just what he's feeling. I wonder if he would prefer some company?
Reverie blinked as he breathed in the dewy morning air. There was a lingering chilliness - the kind that came with waking up early and watching mist rise over the water. He found it comfortable and set a leisurely pace. The buildings stretched high as a stony forest, and while he would have very much liked to be in an actual one, there was an odd, soothing familiarity to the streets he wandered. He couldn't help but laugh to himself when he happened upon a small cafe. A sense of dreamy deja-vu washed over him and he scampered inside (silently praying laws about animals in buildings were a little less strict in dreams), eyeing the almost lonely looking figure at the table. He still felt rather shy, truth to be told, but it was always much less so than in the waking world. Tail flicking to and fro, he took a few cautious steps forward. With a deep breath and a tilt of his head, he let out a quiet little greeting. "Uhm. . . Hello! Clive?"
Caught off guard by hearing his name, Clive quickly glanced down at the floor, towards the voice that came from that little animal. He stared for a moment in almost disbelief before he said anything. "Reverie? Is that you? What are you doing here?" He assessed the situation for a moment, then covered the paper on the table with his free hand — a skeptical look crossing his face. "...That is you, isn't it?"
At Clive's confused greeting, Reverie took a self-conscious step to the side. He should have considered he might have been surprised seeing him as an animal; whether dreaming or awake, it had to be a strange spectacle.
"Uhm, it is. . .," He said with a nervous shuffle of his paws. Quicker than the blink of an eye, Reverie was once again standing before him as a sweater-clad and fidgety individual. "Sorry, I should've - " He broke off and shook his head, as if he thought better of what he was going to say.
"It is me, though!" He felt rather unsure what to do, so instead of pulling up a seat, Reverie opted to stand where a chair may have been. "I wanted to visit and see how you were doing, if that's alright. . . How have things been?"
"Oh..." He raised an eyebrow and glanced up at the now much more familiar person standing in front of him, appearing in a swirl of magic. He scoffed amusedly, already shrugging it off. "I see. Well, that's alright. Don't worry about it." Such a thing may as well happen here, right? It was easier to not question it.
"It's quite nice to see you, actually. I was wondering where you went off to... I'm glad you got to visit again," he noted. "I've been... fine, I suppose." Clive paused and stared down at the words in front of him before continuing his sentence. "I'm not sure, really." He shook his head to clear his thoughts and looked back up with a light and friendly smile. "But, enough about me. What have you been up to?"
Relieved, and feeling more comfortable, Reverie smiled back at him. "I'm sorry for vanishing like that before," he said with an apologetic sigh. "I was just - Something came up." A beat of silence fell as he fiddled with the hem of his sleeve. "I'm glad, too, though! It's nice to catch up with friends like this."
Sympathy washed over his features. "Nothing really. . . I visited Raven a little while ago, though! It was nice to see they're doing good." Feeling a little more than impolite just standing in front of him, Reverie quickly pulled up a chair and settled down across from Clive as he went on.
Clive's demeanor, despite his kind smile, still worried him - he seemed to have something on his mind. Reverie tilted his head at him before he spoke. "But. . . Are you alright? You seemed a little down, or. . . Uhm, distracted." His gaze unconsciously slipped towards the paper he was guarding so closely, but, even in a dream Reverie felt he shouldn't pry.
"No worries," he replied passively, trying his best to be at least somewhat reassuring. He picked up the teacup sitting in front of him and held it in his hand. "Those things happen, I understand."
He listened intently, watching Reverie sit down. Hearing Raven's name, though, he seemed a little surprised. "You did?" He hesitated for a second, before smiling almost wistfully. "They're doing well... that's nice to hear. It's actually quite hard to tell, sometimes, isn't it?"
Hearing his concerns, Clive's expression shifted slightly. "Me? Well..." Something stopped him briefly as he thought over his words, followed by a sigh. "I guess I have been... a bit of both, as it were." He chuckled, mostly to himself, as he gently set down his cup. "To be honest, I don't understand it either... But, it's nothing to fret over, I promise." Following Reverie's inquisitive gaze, he glanced down to the stationery sitting before him. "Ah, don't mind this," he added casually. "It's just a letter, that's all. I was actually writing it here to clear my mind."
As relief flooded over him, Reverie offered a quiet hum of appreciation. Despite Raven's reassurances earlier, he had still felt worried he had offended Clive by having to leave so quickly. It was soothing to hear all was well straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
He nodded. "It can be, but I don't blame them. . ." He mirrored Clive's own smile, but couldn't help but notice the almost misty quality to it. He had the passing thought he ought to have visited them together, but it would have been somewhat difficult given the fact they were all dreaming. "Everyone's got their way of expressing themselves, and it's alright if they're a little hard to read sometimes." He smiled and clasped his hands together. "Just give them some time, and I'm sure they'll open up to you more!"
Brows knit with concern, Reverie felt worry lodge itself in his chest. He knew pressing would do no good, and it often made others uncomfortable, but. . . "I'm sorry to hear," he began with a sympathetic murmur. "Are you sure there's no need to worry? I'll trust you, but, well, uhm - I can try my best to help if you like." Reverie sighed and set a worried gaze on him. "Maybe Raven could help?" Despite the soft melancholy in the air, the mention of a letter sparked his interest. Reverie chided himself for being so nosy, but he decided if he didn't ask who for out loud, who could blame him for a little curiosity? "A letter? That's so exciting!" He flashed him a smile. "How's it coming along so far?"
