You find yourself on a simple, unidentified street with a brick road - a cozy little intersection with tall buildings surrounding it. A few feet away, someone sits alone at a table, just outside a cafe. Their long black hair hangs in front of and covers most of their face, but they seem to be enjoying themselves. I wonder if they would prefer some company?

An odd little creature bounces along the road, his image hazy and soft like something not quite there. He seems content in his wandering, taking little moments to pause and take in all the sights and sounds of the city. A cafe, cozy and warm, catches his attention and he skids to a halt (lamenting the feeling of brick on his paws - he should have considered it might hurt!), immediately turning and making his way towards the entrance.
The stranger, whoever they may be, (and his realization that wait; animals aren't allowed in cafes, are they?) causes him to stop before entering. The thought of joining them and making a new friend crosses his mind, and he can't help but make the snap decision to try. Shaking off his nervousness, or doing his best to, he scampers closer and takes a seat so that two, soft little antlers poke up from opposite the stranger's side of the table. He probably should have gotten a chair, but oh well.

The gloomy-looking individual glances over the top of their cup, down at a small cloudy shape that pranced over to their table. They evaluate the situation for a second, before raising their eyebrows and turning away - a little fluffy animal is nothing out of the ordinary for them. "Can I help you?" They murmured.

Oh, thinks the little creature with a panicked, surprised look on his face at their response, Oh, I hadn't planned what to actually say. He hoists himself up and rests his front paws on the table edge as he gathers his thoughts, deciding the only downside to staying in his current form is how incredibly short he is. He gives a nervous little huff of air before speaking. "Uhh, yes, I think - or, I mean, hello there!" He shifts anxiously, accidentally jostling the table as he does so. "I saw you while I was walking by and. . . Figured it wouldn't hurt to try making conversation."

They haughtily lifted their coffee so the shaking of the table wouldn't spill it, scoffing slightly. "Really now..." They took a deep sigh and leaned on their elbow in front of them, peering down at the little beast with a hint of a smile. "Okay, I have nothing better to do. Do you have a name?"

He winces, giving an apologetic glance over to the coffee they had to lift. He's incredibly grateful they didn't point out the mishap, but he worries thanking them for it might not be the best idea. He settles with a friendly smile instead. "Yes! It's, uhm, Reverie Dream. . . But, I just go by Reverie. . It's nice to meet you!" He pauses a moment, tilting his head and trying to push back any lingering shyness. "What's yours?"

"My name..." They contemplated for a moment whether or not they should bother - either with their long full name, or anything at all. "You can just call me Raven, if you'd like." They delicately set their cup back down, and motioned to a chair with their free hand. "Go ahead. You seem like a nice..." A short pause to think. "...person?"

"Raven!" He says it with a small smile and nod to himself, as if committing it to memory. "That's such a cool name!" He gives a little wriggle before hopping up onto the chair they offered, settling down comfortably. "Thank you!" He seems to hesitate for a moment, mulling over their words before speaking up again. "And, uhm, sorry if this form is a little strange - I promise I'm sort of a person. . . But now that I say that out loud, it sounds worse somehow." He casts them a sheepish look. "But, uhm, what brings you here? It's a very nice place!"

"Thank you, I suppose," they responded, half under their breath. "Don't worry yourself about that, by the way. I've dealt with much stranger people, you're alright in my book." Raven took a sip of their drink between sentences and leaned back in their chair. "I was actually waiting for a friend of mine here. But I don't think he's showing up..." An unreadable expression crossed their face, but it seemed irritated. "I can't stand it sometimes... I'm just glad to talk to anyone right about now."

Reverie breathed a quiet sigh of relief. "Ah, well, I'm glad to hear. . . I was a little worried about seeming weird!" As they continued, however, he frowned and let out an apologetic hum. "I'm sorry to hear he isn't showing up. . . Could he just be running late, hopefully?" He shifted around in the chair in an attempt to get comfortable again, or maybe just out of leftover nervous energy. "But, I'm happy to hear I was able to provide you some company, at least then! It can be very frustrating to be stuck waiting with no one to talk to, I'm sure!"

"I would like to think so, but it's not like him to be late like that." They sighed and shrugged their shoulders in resignation. "Well, it's not my problem. He'll be hearing about it later, though, believe you me." The light sound of a spoon clinking in a ceramic cup filled the silence for a moment. "What about you? You don't seem like you're from around here. Or anywhere, to be honest."

"Oh. . ." Reverie blinked at them, giving a small supportive nod of his head. "I hope next time you two meet up, then, that he makes it there!" At their next question, however, he seemed to shift back into fidgety nervousness. He had forgotten he was still fairly blurry - only just on the edge of the waking world. "Well, uhm, it's probably because I'm not!" He said it with an embarrassed little laugh. "It's. . . It can be sort of hard to explain. I don't really live anywhere, truthfully. . ." He paused, expression thoughtful as he searched for the right words. "I mostly just walk from dream to dream whenever I can, but when I'm not doing that I suppose I just stay in the one I made up for myself." He still seemed a little shy about continuing, but offered a friendly smile nonetheless. "Sometimes it is nice to give the real world a visit, though!"

Raven gave a knowing smile hearing his story.
"Ah, I see! We have more in common than I originally thought. Promise not to tell, but I'm doing something somewhat similar right now." They twirled part of their hair through their fingers for a moment. "I don't exactly live anywhere, either. I used to, but I started travelling through a whole lot of places after I taught myself how..." They paused on their words, allowing themselves to catch up with their own thoughts. "I haven't really settled down anywhere yet, though this place is almost persuading me..." Raven blinked a few times, almost perplexed. "I didn't think I would run into anyone else who wasn't quite from around here. If you understand what I mean."

Reverie couldn't help the excited, shocked little gasp that escaped him. "That's amazing - not that you don't have anywhere to live, I mean - but it's amazing that we have that in common!" He perked up in his chair, eyes aglow with interest. "And I can't believe you taught yourself how - that's impressive! If it's alright for me to ask, how'd you learn? I've just always been like this, I hadn't ever realized someone could learn the magic of it!" He paused a moment to take a quick breath before continuing, nearly forgetting himself in his excitement. "I know what you mean, though. . . It really is so comfortable and kind here, it'd be such a good place to stay." He then folded his paws as they continued, nodding along in agreement. "Ah, I know the exact feeling. . . I can't say I've ever met someone like myself, either. . . Until now, I mean. And oh, do not worry, I cross my heart I won't tell!"

"Well, I'm glad you're impressed," Raven remarked flippantly, though they were only half joking. "I don't really remember exactly how I learned to shift. I spent so long trying that it seems as if it comes naturally now. If I remembered, I would tell you. My apologies." They brushed some of their hair out of their face and readjusted themselves in their seat. "You're a rare exception, though. I usually don't share this fact with anyone I meet, because of its unusual nature in most places I go to... But you seem like you understand." They nodded, mostly to themselves, and let him continue. "I suppose so. I've seen nicer places over the years, but something is keeping me here longer than I expected." They chuckled slightly and crossed their free hand in front of them. "I guess it's a nice change of pace. I usually end up wandering into some really strange places, but this one seems pretty close to what it's like where I come from." Raven glanced around for a moment, almost as if looking for something, but shook their head and turned back to their table with half a smile. "It's a good thing we ran into each other, then. It is relieving to get this off my chest."

Reverie nodded as Raven went on, humming both in acknowledgement and admiration. "Oh, there's no need to apologize at all. . . Plus, that's amazing you've become a natural at it like that!" As they continued, he sat up a little straighter in the chair, the tiniest hint of a proud gleam in his eyes. "Thank you, then! It's a genuine honor that you told me," He tilted his head at them, a friendly, lop-sided smile on his face. "I do know what you mean, though! Being a dream spirit I guess I could just say so in an actual dream, but outside there it's a similar situation." He paused, seeming to wrestle with a thought for a moment before continuing. "I suppose I mostly keep the whole shape-shifting thing a secret more, but you seem very trustworthy! If you'd be more comfortable talking to a, uh, actual person, feel free to let me know!" Reverie felt a flicker of curiosity as they mentioned other places, but decided it would be best not to pry. "Oh, wow, this is like the place you're from? It must be so nice there!" There was a small beat of silence as he took a moment to look around, taking in the scenery with wide, curious eyes. "If you don't mind me asking, how long have you been staying? Are there any nice places to visit?" Reverie flashed another grin at Raven's words and made a quiet, contented sound. "It is! It's so nice to finally have a friend to talk to about all this. . . You know, we ought to meet up again some time after today!" He pressed a paw under his chin as if in thought. "You can probably find me about anywhere - all you have to do really is take a nap!"

Raven gave a polite nod as they listened, crossing their legs idly. "I really don't mind either way, but you might. Right now we're pretty much out of sight of anyone, but if someone comes by you might have to change for your own sake. Talking dogs aren't really a thing here... mostly." They swirled the remainder of their coffee around the bottom of their cup for a second. "At least I think you're a dog. But, you know, suit yourself, I guess. Literally. It's not my business!" They shrugged and made a so-so motion with their free hand. "Well, not exactly like it. A different city, for one. But pretty close." Raven took a moment to think on his question, squinting at nothing in particular. "Um... Maybe six or seven months? It doesn't sound like a lot, but for me, it is. The longest I've ever stayed in one place was a year, I think." They drank the last sip of their latte and set down their now-empty cup in front of them. "There's a few. If you see a big long river, you're going in the right direction. Though it's easy to get lost around here, too, so keep both your eyes open." Raven half chuckled and put their hands in their lap. "I'll be sure to remember that! Come and find me later tonight when I finally get to sleep, if you like - but you might be waiting a while." They paused for a second before adding an exasperated remark, sotto voce. "Speaking of waiting a while..."

Reverie gave a little nod, ears perking curiously at the 'mostly' they had tacked on. "That's true!" He swung his head around to get another good look at their surroundings, giving a nervous wriggle at the distant sound of footsteps along the streets. "I ought to just go ahead - and, oh!" He patted at the oddly fuzzy antlers atop his head. "Dog is just the easiest to say, but I'm not really anything in particular! This," There was a split second of silence and a little burst of flowers obscuring him before the strange, mismatched creature was replaced with a person who somehow seemed to look very much like him, "is probably much safer, though!" As he resettled onto the chair, he straightened out the rumpled fabric of a rather old looking sweater. "Another city? How cool!" He took a moment to stretch out his fingers and clasp his hands together as Raven spoke. "That's still a pretty big number. . . It sounds like a second, cozy home now!" He tilted his head at them, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "A year, though. . . Whoa! For the most part I'm only in places however long a dream lasts, but I suppose my own counts as where I've stayed longest!" He nodded along at their directions, determined to remember what Raven mentioned about the river. "I'll do my best," He gave his hair a sheepish ruffle, "I'm not the best with, uh, finding my way, though. . . Wish me luck once I'm on my way if you like!" Reverie gave them another grin. "I will! I can get around dreams better than I can the actual city, so it'll be no problem!" As they continued, however, his expression changed to a sympathetic frown. He chose not to comment, for fear of being impolite, but still found himself worrying.

Raven raised their eyebrows for a second, hearing the same faint sound of footsteps, but even further in surprise as Reverie switched forms in front of them. How he was still very much recognizable as the same being was beyond them, but nothing out of the ordinary at the end of the day. They took a deep sigh and leaned back in their chair, almost risking to tip it over. "Well, it was alright. I never really thought of where I came from as my home, so to speak." They looked off into the middle distance, furrowing their eyebrows. "I just thought of it as... where I came from. Does that make sense?" They asked, rhetorically, of course. "I guess a year is a long time, in retrospect. Though I've had dreams that seem like they last even longer... but I suppose to you, it would only take a few hours out of your day." They looked a little bit mystified for a moment, trying to calculate how that would work, before shaking their head and letting him continue. "If you like, I could show you around, as long as you're here." Raven cracked a polite smile. "It's still pretty early, and I've been living here for a while now, so I know my way around... Or so I like to think." They twirled a few strands of their hair around their fingers, nodding as Reverie continued. They quickly noticed his frown in response after their disdainful comment. "Don't worry about it, really," they added, trying their best to clear the air. "My friend should probably be showing up soon. You don't mind, do you? Though I'll warn you, he's not particularly..." Raven let their sentence trail off, grimacing slightly. "Well, he can be a bit of a headache sometimes, but he means well, I think."

Reverie couldn't help but feel a hint of shyness at their surprise, fidgeting with the sleeve of his sweater just to occupy the nervous energy of his hands. He nodded gently as they continued, a flicker of understanding in his gaze - but he chose to let them retain their privacy. "Oh, yes!" He paused his fussing with his sleeve to drum three fingers on the table-top. "I'm not too good with explaining that kind of thing, but you've got it in the right direction! Dreams can, uhm, seem to last forever to the person who's having them, but most of the time I just pop in and experience the whole thing in real time or even change them in the right situation." He stopped himself and looked down at the table. "Ah, sorry if I got a little carried away - it can be really fun to talk about sometimes." As they went on he perked up in his chair, an incredulous, but thankful, smile on his face. "Really? That's so kind of you! I'd love that as long as you're sure it's no bother." He went back to tugging at his sweater sleeve, nodding along and humming in acknowledgement while Raven spoke. "I don't mind at all, it's always nice to meet new people - " He hesitated, staring over at them with wide eyes as a realization struck him. "Will. . . Will he mind, though? I really wouldn't want to intrude, but if your friend's alright with it, then I'm happy to meet him and walk around with you both!"

Raven stared ahead intently, listening to his explanation of it all. "No, it's alright, I understand. I would explain a little more in depth how I got here, but it's a little risky right now." They lowered their voice a little bit and made a vague hand motion. "Though my method of travel isn't nearly as soft and pretty as yours sounds. I woke up passed out in a back alley trying to get here..." They tried their hardest not to snicker. "Don't worry, I'm fine now. I think. Besides, my dreams are never particularly interesting, so I'm sure I would remember it if you ever stopped by."
They smiled and tilted their head slightly. "Of course! I promise it's no problem, if you'd like. I don't know how long you intend to stay here, so I could certainly do that. Carpe diem, I suppose." Raven raised an eyebrow in thought for a moment. "I don't think he would mind, no. He really is quite nice, despite what I may say behind his back. He's just a little bit..." They paused, looking for a word in their mind. "...Insolent?" They raised a hand to their mouth and stifled a laugh. "No, really, though. I'm certain he would really like making a new friend. I could introduce you, of course! Though I think for now, we might just--" Raven's sentence was then interrupted, almost on cue, by the same sound of footsteps from before, only closer – causing them to quickly turn around from their chair... What Raven saw behind them just then as they turned around, was a familiar and tidily-dressed young man in blue, sprinting around the corner almost frantically. "I... am so sorry for being late!" He skidded to a halt outside the cafe and sighed, taking a second to catch his breath before continuing. "It was just that I had something to do last minute, and I got lost on the way here, and not even mentioning--" "Hey, chill out for a second, you know I don't mind." Raven quickly interrupted his rambling, waving a friendly hand towards him. "I was wondering if you'd ever show up, though." "Well, thanks for not just standing me up, I suppose." He cast a quick facetious glare at them, before taking notice of Reverie sitting across the table. He took a small, timid step back in surprise and folded his hands in front of him. "Oh! Um, am I interrupting something? Sorry, I don't believe we've met..."

Reverie blinked incredulously as Raven spoke, concern glimmering in his eyes. "Passed out? Did you fall, or hit anything?" His fingers twitched as if he were thinking of reaching for some unseen first aid kit. "Are. . . Are you sure you're alright? I don't see any bruises or scrapes on you, but," He worried at his bottom lip and looked them over once again. "Be careful, alright?" He paused, tugging at a stray sprout in his hair. "And, oh, I am sure they're very interesting. . . Every dream is, even if it seems boring to the person having it!" He clasped his hands together again and gasped. "Oh, you really are so kind! I'm not sure how long I'll be here, truthfully - I can't stay in one place too long. For now, though, I'd still love to get to see everything!" As Raven told him about their friend, however, he found himself growing the tiniest bit anxious. Reverie trusted their assurance that he was kind, but maybe it was shyness mixed with not quite knowing what to expect that had him right back to fidgeting.
When Raven's sentence cut short and an unfamiliar figure sprinted into view, Reverie had to fight the urge to switch forms and disappear to wherever it was he had come from. He was thankful the two of them were focused on one another for a second, so he could at least gather his thoughts and shake off his nerves. The stranger did seem nice, after all! Although, when he took notice of him, Reverie froze and had to scramble to find his voice again. "Uhm, sorry, no, it is okay!" He wasn't quite sure if he should extend a hand to shake or keep it to himself, but he still sprang up from his chair with a clatter and gestured to it sheepishly. "I guess I sort of stole your seat, there - it's all yours now, though! I'm new here and I've been talking to Raven for a little bit. . . They're very nice and told me a little about you." He gave his sleeve another tug. "It's very nice to meet you. . . I'm Reverie!"

"Oh, no, no, go ahead! I don't mind at all," he fretted slightly. He walked over and took the nearest empty chair from another table (which was... all of them?) and set it down between the two already there. "Told you about me? Only good things, I would hope?" He chuckled and took a seat, brushing himself off rather daintily as he did. "Only kidding. My name is Clive. It's nice to meet you too, Reverie! It's a very nice name, as well..." Raven cast a quick look at the both of them, wondering whether or not they should continue their conversation with Reverie now that they have company. They cleared their throat and broke the short silence that had fallen. "Um, as I was saying, before you got here," they began, "I was telling Reverie about how I... how we met. You remember, right?" They glanced over to Clive, then gave a knowing look to Reverie, trying to communicate something without speaking. "Are you joking? Of course I would remember that!" Clive elbowed them in the side in jest. "Don't tell me you forgot. Wouldn't be out of character for you, though..."

Reverie couldn't help but worry he should have offered to fetch the chair himself, but settled with a polite smile in his direction. "Ah, yes! They, uhm, told me you are very kind and I can see why." A moment of silence as he shyly took a seat again, "Th-thank you! Yours is very nice, too." As Raven looked to him, Reverie tilted his head and offered a tiny, barely there smile as if to indicate 'no worries!'. He nodded at their words, stifling a quiet laugh as the two of them playfully bickered. "I would love to hear it from both of you, though, if that's alright. . . It's always so fun to hear both sides of these sorts of stories!"

Raven gave a subtle smile in Reverie's direction in response, as if to thank him. "Well, it's a little blurry for me." They tucked their long, dark hair behind their ear idly. "I can try my best, but I can't recall most of it." "You really don't remember? Alright, I can tell both of you, then," Clive said with a smirk.
"So... a few months ago, I was walking back home at the end of the day. But I felt like deviating from my normal route for once... So I take a shortcut, right? Between two buildings. And I look down this long, dark passageway behind them, and someone is just lying face down on the ground! It scared me half to death, I think!" "Sorry. It's a talent of mine." "Oh, quiet. So I go over and check, and they're mostly unconscious, and didn't seem to be too hurt. And I thought to myself, well, at least they're not dead." "Thanks."
"Do you mind? Anyway, I was there for a while. Eventually Raven here woke up, and I started asking them, you know, anything. What's your name? Are you alright? Where did you come from? They told me everything just fine, but apparently they still have no memory of where they came from, or what happened... it's called amnesia, and it sometimes happens in cases like this. With injury, or trauma, or whatever, really... It's really quite sad, actually." Raven stared down into their empty cup for a minute. "But people with amnesia usually end up recovering and remembering things they've forgotten. So we're holding out for that! Anyway, after all that commotion, I had to keep an eye on them to make sure that they really were okay. They had a few injuries, but nothing serious, it all went away in a few weeks. And I guess we just sort of made friends in that time!"
"Huh? Oh, sure, yeah! I've been staying at his house since I got here. I don't really know where else to go, so..."
"I suppose that's all that there really is to it." He adjusted his hat and sighed, before glancing down at the table. "Did you already get yourself coffee? I'd really like some tea, I think... What about you, Reverie? Do you prefer anything?"

Reverie gave them another little smile as Clive began, turning to focus his attention on him so he could listen better. As he went on, their little snippets of banter had him trying to stifle laughter again. Once he reached the point about amnesia, though, Reverie found himself sending a subtle, sympathetic look in Raven's direction. He felt another burst of worry at the mention of injuries, but decided it best to just let that be - plus, interrupting was rude. Clive himself said they healed alright, and he seemed kind enough to believe. Reverie finally stopped pulling at his sleeve to bring his hands together again. "What a story! Clive, you're a real kind heart to be helping like that, and Raven - I'm so thankful you met him when you did and that you've got a place to stay!" He smiled at the both of them. "It sounds like the start of an already amazing friendship - and oh, yes!" He cast a sheepish glance down at the table as he went on. "Tea is actually my favorite, it's always been a comfort." A split second of silence hung in the air as he mulled over what to say, looking back towards the entrance of the cafe. "Uhm, if everyone wants, we could all walk inside and get something? I've never been here before, so it would be nice to see what it's like. . .," He looked between the two of them with a curious, albeit hesitant expression. "It's up to you two, of course!"

"Oh, I wouldn't say that. It's just what anyone would do in my situation, I would hope." He averted his eyes and folded his hands, staring somewhere at the ground as he continued. Raven smiled and nodded in acknowledgement to Reverie's comments, not wanting to interrupt - or perhaps not having much to add. Clive looked back up with a start at the end of his sentence. "Uh, yeah! Yeah, you're right. It is." He cleared his throat and pulled his hat down, suddenly struck with a wave of self-consciousness. Raven raised an eyebrow in a brief moment of silence, then looked over to Reverie questioningly. "Tea's your favorite? You're a tea drinker, huh... Seems like everyone here is but me." Clive suppressed a sigh of relief when the topic was finally changed. "You say that as if we're the strange ones." "Well, no matter. I already got a latte about an hour ago, but I wouldn't mind us all going in before we head somewhere." They stood up from their chair and stretched, almost yawning as they did. "Come on then. It might be closing soon, it's already after 12. You both go ahead and get what you want, I'll follow." Raven tilted their head with a smile and motioned to the door.

"That's true," Reverie said with a hum. "But, still, it's always good to be thankful for kindness like that!" He hesitated once Clive pulled his hat down, feeling a flicker of guilt for flustering him like that. He tried to convey it with an apologetic smile in Clive's direction. He perked up when Raven looked to him and he nodded. "It is! And oh, uhm, I'm sorry about that - coffee is good, I've just never been a fan personally.. it does smell really nice, though!" He followed Raven's lead and stood, stretching his arms above his head and ruffling some of the sprouts in his hair. "Is it really after twelve?" He asked in quiet astonishment. "I hope you're right and it's still open, I'd lost track of time. . .," He fell back so he could walk beside the two of them as they made their ways to the entrance. Cozy was the first word to cross Reverie's mind when he finally trailed after the two of them inside. It was decorated in soft, warm browns and creams with little tables nestled along the walls and corners. There were small knick-knacks displayed all along the shelves; from coffee cups and little plates to old, shiny kettles. He could smell fresh-brewed coffee and hear the quiet chatter of the staff, all mingling together to create a soothing atmosphere that nearly lulled him to sleep on the spot. The menu, hung high on the wall behind the counters (where he caught a glimpse of some fairly tempting sweets and sandwiches), was written in elegant, swooping writing. He squinted, trying his best to peruse the menu to find some sort of tea he would like, but he felt a little out of his depth in such a new place. "Uhm, Clive, if you're ordering, too, you can go ahead of me. . .," He murmured with another nervous glance at all the options. While he had done it mostly out of politeness, Reverie couldn't deny he was hoping to figure out his own order by following the other's lead.
