You'll never takes us alive
We swore that death will do us part They'll call our crimes a work of art You'll never takes us alive We'll live like spoiled royalty, lovers and partners Partners in crime
The streets of St Louis are little more than a playground for this criminal duo. The modern day Bonnie and Clyde. Their favourite targets, small shops, diners, places with minimal security, but if they see a score, well then no one is safe.
Person A is the mastermind, he is controlling and narcissistic with a flair for planning the perfect crime. Quick to anger and passionate about his beliefs. People are, in his opinion disposable.
Amelia Thorne is more than a sidekick, she is beautiful and intelligent, with a serious case of Stockholm syndrome. Some would describe her as insane, and they probably wouldn't be far from the truth. A wild card with a short fuse and unpredictable nature that makes people afraid of her.
(So this is a little fluffy fun romance rp, I don't really have any post requirements but a paragraph makes it much easier to respond to.)

The dry chill of autumn clung to the air. Crisp brown leaves slipped off the branches of the linden trees that were dotted along the pavement opposite the coffee shop. Passers-by were trussed up in thick coats and scarves, their outbreaths turning to miniature clouds in the air.
Eric was similarly dressed. The fresh Italian leather on his coat still squeaked mildly when he adjusted in his chair. But he was so warm with the mink fur coating inside. Around his neck a red silk scarf was wrapped several times and tucked into the collar of his coat. The colour of it complimented the copper tinge to his otherwise espresso coloured quiff. On mornings such as this the sun glared into the eyes of everyone, so Eric wore some blue tinted Dior sunglasses to complete his look. Well, it wasn’t really complete without a fresh Marlboro in-between his gloved fingers. He lit one end and took a long inhale, relaxing as he let the stream of smoke leave his body again. The open pack was left on the table and he turned it towards Amelia slightly, leaving the lighter beside the packet. Whether she would take up the offer was still up to her, but watching a woman with a cigarette was somewhat alluring so he’d do whatever he could to persuade her.
Sometimes just watching her was so satisfying. Sitting back and observing her, like a painting or a sculpture in a European gallery. Felt even better knowing she was his. Besides, the waitress who served them wasn’t much to look at; a drab girl who was more concerned with having to serve customers who sat outside than with how to keep that expensive platinum cross bracelet on her wrist. Must’ve been a gift; perhaps even sentimental if she kept it on during work. Oh well.
As soon as she placed Eric’s coffee down on the table he started asking her some pointless questions, sounding as alarmed as he could; which was quite a lot considering conning people was his job.
“Excuse me, my wife’s coffee is late. This really is unacceptable; we have a meeting with the adoption clinic in twenty minutes and she’s really very nervous, what with her drinking problem and all. Oh god, look what you’ve made me do! Our therapist said we weren’t supposed to mention that anymore, it’ll backtrack, got to treat the problem as if it’s already gone kind of thing. Why, I suppose you’re going to phone my mother now…”
By the time the poor girl had managed to stumble away, Eric had undone the catch on her bracelet and slipped it off. The fool didn’t even notice Amelia wasn’t wearing a wedding ring. Or that people with drinking problems aren’t usually accepted by adoption agencies. Or that therapists don’t tell you to avoid your problems…Jesus, it was like she wanted it to get stolen.
“For you, my dear,” he said to Amelia, placing the platinum chain in front of her. Last week they’d had a little fun in a jewellers together, so this was small fries compared to that, but it was good to start the day with a little exercise. Yet his con had had one unexpected side effect. He started to think about all that; wedding rings and screaming rugrats. Stupid, he knew. Heck, he might even already have a few bastards running around somewhere out there. But there really couldn’t be enough little Eric’s in the world, so why not let Amelia have the privilege of carrying them? Well he didn’t want to screw up her figure. Besides, he could teach the kids the essentials – how to unlock a safe or figure out someone’s pin code, but little league and barbeques really wasn’t his thing. And just when the ‘serious’ subjects were becoming uncomfortable in his mind, the most wonderful distraction came right across his path.
Nine o’clock. A cab, no…a private car. But judging from the stickers on the back and the fact it had rain on the top it had just come from the airport. Taking a private car from the airport to here meant money. The mark stepping out of it wearing new Versace shoes meant money. The coat from London and watch from Bejing meant money. But most of all, the briefcase with at least six combination locks meant money…or something valuable of some sort.
“Heads up sweetheart,” he mumbled to Amelia, cocking his head in the direction of the businessman who was now hurrying down the street towards them.
[[That took longer than expected cause im lazy bum. Also, I don't know what St Louis looks like so I'm hoping it's got trees and cars; was generally unspecific. Can mod character too if you want.]]

(I love him! And I have no idea what St Louis looks like either (Picked it as it came up as having a high crime rate) so it's just generic American city. Thought the US would work better with their trigger happy police and lax gun laws, would make for a bit more drama in the long run) [[Aye, it's probably a detroit like city and yes, americans always do things with flair so lets pick that place. Our people can always travel too if we want to change. ]]

Autumn was her favourite time of year. The crisp air, leaves the colour of flames littering the street and the autumn couture which was so very flattering. Today she had selected a pair of black skinny jeans, brown leather boots with a spool heel, adding a little to her otherwise short stature, an ivory blouse, cinched at the waist and accompanied by a leather jacket. Designer of course.
It was a look that flattered her feminine figure, a curvaceous silhouette. A combination of high class lady and punk rock queen. Taking a cigarette from the packet was almost subconscious, rolling it between her fingers before bringing it to her lips, painted a bold cherry red. Once lit she let her own small cloud of smoke in to the atmosphere, a slight lipstick stain marking the cigarette end. Each of her movements was careful and measured, deliberate in the way of a supermodel. Only her eyes, a bright sapphire shade betrayed the quick wit that she reserved for more exclusive company.
She barely spared a glance for the waitress, taking another drag on her cigarette before turning her attention back to the passers by. She looked aloof and distracted, though she was listening carefully to Eric’s conversation with the now rather flustered waitress. She was always ready to fall in to whatever character he required of her, and she did it so effortlessly. For this little hustle however her seeming distraction was good enough, with a slight upturn of her nose that gave her that middle class, country club look.
Her gaze turned back to him, a soft smile flicking across her plump lips. She took him in for a moment, something she did often, as though memorizing every inch of him. Though she kept it well hidden there was always a sense of disbelief whenever she looked at him, disbelief that this suave con man had taken her with him on his wondrous journey. “For me” She said coyly, picking up the beautiful platinum bracelet. “You shouldn’t have.” He looked a little distracted but she knew better than to interrupt his train of thought, he could be working on some fantastic scheme and her questions would only be a distraction.
His eyes lit up, a clear sign he had spotted their newest target, the eyes of a little boy on Christmas morning. It was enough to make her heart flutter. He confirmed her thoughts with an inclination of his head. She looked subtly, the soft breeze catching her sable hair as she gave the businessman her own quick assessment. Her coy smile morphed in to a smirk, as her attention returned to her companion. “No wedding ring.” She noted, sexuality was always the quickest way to distract almost any man but not always the direction Eric decided to take his criminal gambles. She still had a lot to learn when it came to planning but he could rest assured that whatever he needed her to do, she would give it her all.

[[ Aye it's been a while; how have the years treated you? Also this was about a billion years later than it was meant to be. Sorry time like, exploded on me.]]
Eric played with the idea in his mind for a bit. Or rather, he told himself he was thinking about the best way to crack the businessman open when in reality he was taking in Amelia. The unmistakable message of siren red lips that let every man know his blood could run hot around her. The off-white tone of the delicate fabric of her blouse, blowing in the gentle breeze. My my, he was going to enjoy peeling the garment off of her later. The tight leather of her jacket obeying the curves of her waist and hips, showing she had mastery over some things if not over Eric himself.
Well, that last part was perhaps a little bit of a lie. Of course, he kept his head on his shoulders. Business had to come before pleasure. Yet where he’d been quite happy to cast off other women like dust off his coat, he couldn’t quite do that to Amelia. No, when other men looked at her they usually ended up with black eyes soon after. A hand on her arse meant a broken arm the next day. Because he really didn’t want to share someone like her with other men lesser than himself.
Was he becoming like those idiots who let themselves get caught because of a woman? He’d seen too many jobs botched or heists gone **** up because someone wanted a girl’s hand in his pants rather than cash in his wallet. It absolutely enraged him. Lust was cheap, love, not as much. It still wasn’t worth its weight in gold. Except in some rare instances. Amelia might’ve been one of them. His eyes flickered over her again; raven black hair, a cute little nose and those doe eyes that were bound in unyielding loyalty for him. God, the whole thought made a pleasurable shiver run down his body. Perhaps capturing her heart had been his greatest heist.
Yes…that was it. He had captured her heart, so there was no use keeping her body under lock and key if it meant they could use it to get rich. And that businessman was giving off more and more tasty little signs that he was exactly what they were looking for. Crossing the road without looking – clearly not cautious then. He marched into the coffee shop without noticing that Eric was still looking in his direction. Not street smart at all then. And how about the fact his voice was now raised to that poor waitress who was wailing about her stupid bracelet? Oh, he was arrogant. Arrogance was the best; when people didn’t see their weaknesses they didn’t know when to cover them. It was why Eric was so glad he had no weaknesses.
He stood up, metal chair scraping along the cold concrete as he did so. Another drag of the cigarette before he put it out, then he straightened his jacket and looked about for a bit, checking to see that no one was following the man. At that point he flashed Amelia his warmest, but wickedest smile and slunk round until he was directly behind her. He crouched down, getting so close to her ear that he knew she’d be able to feel his the heat emanating from his body.
“Just remember who you belong to, sweetheart,” he whispered, tender in his tone. Then he planted a kiss right on her cheek, giving her waist a little squeeze at the same time before he slipped back from her and walked into the coffee shop. The waitress and the businessman were the only two in it, so Eric went in un-noticed and then found himself a corner table and newspaper to hide behind. There he kept an eye out, waiting for Amelia to minx her way into the businessman’s brain.

With a final drag on the lit cigarette, glowing embers flicked carefully in to the ashtray before stubbing it out. Beneath her well fitted clothes her skin prickled, that sensation you get when you know someone is watching you. It was thrilling, that same thrill she got when she remembered their crimes, or their equally enthralling late night activities.
She wondered for a moment where she would be if she had decided to skip out on work that day, the day when he rocked up to that shady little truck stop diner and saved her from the mundane life of a poorly paid waitress. The tips had been good, the one thing she liked about the long distance truckers who made up the majority of their client base. Undoing just one too many buttons on her embroidered uniform blouse to create a plunging neckline, and wearing heeled shoes that killed her feet after a ten hour shift but the extra tips they attracted had helped pay her rent. Their crass comments and wandering hands however had been the downside, of course she played up to it but she would go home and rub her skin raw under a scalding hot shower trying to forget those grubby, groping palms.
He had been different, the intensity in his eyes matched her own. Belying an intelligence that instantly captured her attention. Before she met him she could have fooled herself in to believing she was a big time con artist, with a talent for shoplifting and swindling men out of their money. He had shown her just how little she really knew, and she had been an eager student.
His movement jolted her back to the present. A slight inclination of her head, watching him from behind thick lashes as he moved towards her arms wrapping around her possessively. She had no delusions about where she belonged, nor could she see herself in the arms of another man, but if it got the job done she was more than willing to utilise her best weapon.
He moved away, leaving her alone. An unusual sight in the otherwise busy coffee shop. Her gaze flicked to the businessman, watching as he moved with a recklessness afforded him by wealth and status. She quickly checked her face in the little compact mirror that she carried in her purse, deciding she was happy with how she looked, psyching herself up for what was to come. Long legs pushed her away from the table towards the counter, her attention seemingly on the barista but all the while keeping their target in her peripheral, making sure to position herself within his line of sight.
With a sweet smile at the barista she ordered a drink, pulling a credit card from her purse, fumbling and sending it clattering to the floor. He took the bait, distracted from his own conversation, well rant rather with the waitress, who had smudged her make-up unattractively. Reaching down he picked the card up, his eyes glancing at the name before looking up at her again. His eyes sparkled the way she was so familiar with. "Eleanor. That's a pretty name." He said, with a smile, passing the card back to her, before handing his own card to the barista to pay for both his drink and hers. The card she has dropped was fake, well it was a real credit card, but registered to someone called Eleanor Davenport, some poor soul who would be left with the rather extortionate bill.
He gestured to an unoccupied table, suggesting that she sit with him which of course she accepted. Managing not to spare a glance for Eric who she knew would be watching. They fell in to casual conversation, his flirting not even subtle but his attention truly on her as he boldly reached across the table to take her hand. She cringed internally at the touch but smiled playing the coy interested single woman he figured her to be.

[[It really does doesn’t it. All I do now is clean bathrooms and budget now. It’s awful why can’t I go play in a pool and eat mcdonalds every day again?]]
Oh for F*CK’S SAKE! Eric wanted to shout. Really, if he heard one more tasteless pick up line or saw clunky sleazy smile away from that excuse of a man he’d march over, pin his face to the table and then educate him on how to treat a lady like Amelia.
Of course, in his time he’d been as tactless, but only once it was a done deal; like if it was a girl he’d bought for the night. The occasion that he’d hire a call-girl was actually pretty often considering he didn’t care to put effort in with women. He didn’t want to wake up in the morning and see them pining for more attention, or worse, see them holding a knife to his neck.
His mind had only changed when he’d been travelling. He’d picked up too much heat in Chicago; cracked the safe belonging to some gang boss who now wanted him dead. So that night with nothing but the clothes on his back he’d stowed away on the back of a lorry destined for a depot just outside Detroit. He’d planned to sneak over the border there and stay in Canada until it had died down.
But then the trucker had stopped at that abysmal little diner and when Eric had gone in for a piss he’d spotted her; a sultry raven-haired girl desperately trying to squeeze some extra dollar bills out of the trucker he was traveling with. He’d had so much fun with her; ordering just a tea without so much as a smile or a compliment and then leaving a twenty dollar tip. All night he’d ignored her, internally cackling as she tried harder and harder to get his attention. Then, at the last minute, just before he left, he dropped his number and said that if she was interested, he’d send one of his rolls royce’s to pick her up for dinner one night.
That was three years ago now. How little he had known back then; thinking that he was going to capture Amelia when in some strange way, she had also captured him. Why else would he be so bothered by the pasty fatso with the receding hairline trying to do the same thing?
But when the aforementioned raised his hand to grasp Amelia’s, he let it leave the briefcase. Oh he wasn’t going to do so for very long, Eric knew, but he didn’t need very long either. He stood up, making sure the chair didn’t make a sound. His shoes were new, but made of soft, high quality leather so they didn’t make a sound as he slipped over, picked up the case and made it to the door. The waitress was on her phone, the businessman still besotted by Amelia. Just before he left the coffee shop he turned around, Amelia’s eyes met his for just a second and he mouthed “first date”. She’d know he meant he’d be where he took her after their first date. They’d used that place a few times now to hide out after a job.
So without waiting any further, he poked his head out the coffee shop door to check for any security cameras surrounding the place; none. Perfect. He waited until there was a few people crossing the road until he went across too and hopped in a taxi sitting at the rank a just a hundred meters down the street. He took the cab to the Ritz-Carlton and nabbed a key for luxury suite 2; the exact same room they’d always used.
But instead of frolicking in happy memories, Eric was slowly worn down by the stress of hacking into the briefcase. Every combination he tried was useless. His tips and tricks just didn’t work. By the time Amelia arrived he was standing over the thing, jacket abandoned and shirt rolled up to his sleeves, glaring at the thing like it had just killed his mother.

It turned out the man's name was Jack Steel, she had to stop herself from laughing when he told her that. That was the name of someone in adult videos. Despite this he was charming in that arrogant playboy sort of way. Not her style at all but she'd let him think he was getting somewhere.
His attention was on her entirely so he paid no attention to the man who stepped past to collect the unattended briefcase. The fleeting eye contact was enough for her to get the message and a slight inclination of her head told him that she understood, whilst looking entirely engaged in the tedious conversation with the man across from her.
They talked for a while longer, him about his family and work and some upcoming party that he insisted she accompany him to, pressing his number on a napkin in to her palm. She tucked it in to her bag, before excusing herself to go to the ladies room. She headed in the direction of the toilets, waiting until he was distracted by his mobile, before changing direction and darting unseen towards the exit.
A long sigh escaped her as she stepped on to the street, heels clicking as she walked. She didn't head directly to where she knew Eric would be waiting for her, ensuring no one was following her by taking short detours and doubling back on herself. Once happy she was alone, she followed the familiar path to the Ritz-Carlton and in to the large and opulent foyer. She looked as at home here as any of the kept women checking in, some poor bellhop carrying their Louis Vuitton hand luggage whilst they coddled their yappy little dogs. Though she was definitely more edgy, with the air of danger that separates her from them.
She knocked on the door to the room she knew well, the same knock she always did so that he would know that it was her. She knew him well enough that the stress was clearly written across his face. Sashaying past him in to the room, a casual swing of her hips before perching on the bed, beside the obvious cause of his annoyance, the briefcase. "Try 231187" She suggested, she had seen their targets date of birth on his drivers licence when he paid for their coffees. She was no safe cracker but she had a knack for patterns and passcodes. People were predictable. She watched him from behind thick lashes, a slightly sultry gaze, hoping he wasn't mad at her for flirting with this douchebag. Even if it had all been an act.

Damnit. He was hoping to get it before she’d arrived. Now he looked like a fool; what idiot couldn’t crack a briefcase right in front of him? It was risky to look incompetent in front of anyone; even someone you loved.
What was worse was she wasn’t flustered at all. God, she even waltzed over to the bed and spoke the passcode out like he was a toddler trying to figure out that square peg goes in square hole. It was infuriating, he was almost to the point of telling her to piss off when he saw here there, casually sitting on the bed.
Guilt overtook him at first. How many times had he let his fears get hold of him? They were part of the reason he kept her at arms distance sometimes. Part of the reason he got so angry when things didn’t go to plan. He reminded himself again, Amelia is not here to take you over. Maybe one day he’d really believe it.
Without another word he slipped the combination into the briefcase. A few cog sounds, then a click. The latch flipped open. Eric didn’t know whether to scream or laugh. He opted for neither. Instead he went straight to his favourite distraction.
A sharkish grin crawled over his face, eyes glowing with wicked hunger. He shifted out the pouffe that was between the bed and the desk with one passing kick. Then he crawled onto the bed until he’d reached Amelia. Then he grabbed the side of her legs and pulled her onto him. Once she was securely anchored around his waist he swivelled round so that he was against the headboard and she was on top. By this point he was fervently kissing her and it wasn’t long until his hands were wandering down towards the buckle of his belt.
But before anything else more exciting happened, his eyes caught the sight of the briefcase. By now it had popped open. Instantly he broke away from Amelia and moved her to the side.
“What?!” he said, staring at the empty interior of his stolen possession. “Where’s the f***ing money?!”

She didn't like to make him feel foolish, she knew it was something that displeased him and she hated to see him displeased. Sitting and watching him battle with combinations could have been amusing but when she had an inkling of what it would be her impatience would have gotten the better of her. She needed to know what was inside.
He returned to the case, clicking the combination in a moment of tense anticipation. The lock snapped open and she almost let out a little whoop, before deciding that would be unbecoming of a lady. His attention rounded on her, as it did often when he was pleased, grabbing her legs rolling her until she straddled his waist. She was slight, meaning she didn't weigh much making it easy for him to lift. It made her feel a little powerless but with him she didn't mind, it added to the thrill. His animalistic grin was mirrored by one of her own, flashing slightly pointed canine teeth before their lips crushed together. Her hands ran along his spine, down his arms and over his chest, taking in as much of him as she could.
She let out a little squeak of annoyance when he pulled away, pouting slightly before realising just what had stolen his attention. "That bastard" She said swinging her legs around and moving towards the disappointingly empty vessel. "Why the hell would you carry an empty briefcase?" Perhaps he had been on the way to collect something of value, perhaps they had been just to eager and following him for a while might have led them to a greater bounty. But for now she was left feeling cheated, like she had wasted her time flirting with some joker for nothing.
"He has money, I know he does. He was saying about some high roller party this weekend. Anyone who is anyone in business is going to be there." She knew the type of party, champagne and well dressed waiters with bite sized treats on silver trays. Where rich men snuck away from their ignorant wives for five minutes of fun in the bathroom with their secretary come mistress.

“I knew his hand left it too easily,” Eric muttered, crossing his arms and sliding off the bed. Not to say that Amelia wasn’t a worthy distraction; but no one made money by being distracted. As he looked over the side of the briefcase and shook it a little bit he realised there were no secret compartments or places anything could be hidden.
After a little wipe-down with some mild bleach wipes he’d left in the desk drawer the last time they were here he left the case alone and turned back to Amelia. He was serious now; fun and games couldn’t be further from his mind. It was the reason he was the perfect criminal, no matter how tempting Amelia got, he’d always put the job first. He had to. He didn’t have much to offer a woman apart from that (well, that and incredibly good looks and charm and wit, but women worth having usually cared about money and adventure first).
“If he was going to collect something he’d have had to call off the meet by now. Judging that he was taking the case with him, not delivering it there first, means he doesn’t trust whoever he’s going to meet. So it’s someone richer than him. That person might be that that party,” he said. Then he winced internally. Amelia was going to have to play the roll a little longer. More importantly, he was going to have to watch from the sidelines a little longer. That meant he couldn’t get in imposing as a businessman. Unfortunately, Eric really couldn’t pull of waiter either. Security guard? It would have to be that.
Eric looked over to Amelia and sighed. Sometimes it almost irritated him that she was nearly as smart as him and still just treated as a trophy by most of the marks she flirted with. Still, it made her his little secret weapon, and he liked that.
He slowly made his way across the room again, the slight frustration and disappointment that he felt over her continuing the ruse written into his offcast glance. Eric’s fingers found the collar of her blouse and he pressed along the hemline, running his hands downward into the crook of its neckline. He looked up again and found her stare, practically bathing in it for a moment before he finally admitted to himself that she would need to be loaned out again if they were ever going to finish the job.
And Eric never didn’t finish the job. No, he could plan a bank heist or fence a stolen painting, but taking meaningless cash without reason meant that the art form he’d perfected all his life would be lost. And he just couldn’t lose his art.
“I’ll get you an earpiece disguised as some chandelier earrings. I’ll make sure it’s titanium, just in case they have security scanners. It’s a party so they probably won’t. Your mic will be hidden in your bracelet, as usual. Remember not to know anything about politics or economics – just talk about what Kim Kardashian is wearing and how you lost five pounds on a juice cleanse.”
“Wear the Harrods dress or the peach Harvey Nichol’s one…just don’t wear the little red one I got you in Sicily,” he whispered. He let his nose nestle in her hair for a moment, breathing her in before planting a few kisses on her neckline. “That one’s for me and me alone.”

The irritation of both was palpable, yet the whole heist had been too easy anyway and although money would have been nice it was the thrill of the crime that set her blood alight. Once content there were no hidden compartments and having tucked the case away he returned to her, working through the scenario out loud.
She kept quiet, letting him work it out. Coming to the realisation she would have to go back to the role she had played in the coffee shop. She knew Eric would never be far away whatever situation they found themselves in, but these parties were not the kind of place a young, pretty woman who wasn't interested in old men with money wanted to find herself. Money led to entitlement and that, in turn, led to touching what was not theirs to touch.
She studied him with her quick intelligent gaze, dark curls casting a shadow over her pale features. Tilting her head slightly to one side as he toyed with the collar of her blouse, the action tipping her mage of raven curls back over her shoulder allowing him better access. If words confirmed her own thoughts and she pouted slightly, though in jest, pleased at least he would ensure they could be in contact even if he couldn't be there directly.
"I barely know who Kim Kardashian is." She said truthfully, I mean of course she knew the name, but why would she care what some wannabe celebrity was up to. She'd have to have a study up on the goings on in the entertainment world. Surprisingly despite her looks, Amelia was not that way inclined, she didn't follow celebrities and fashion blogs. She didn't know who was dating who or what was going on on the red carpet. Why follow the lives of people she didn't truly know when her own life was so very exciting?
A short breath escaped her painted lips as his fingers brushed against her skin, an involuntary reaction that his touch always evoked. A small rumble of pleasure, not dissimilar to a cats purr. "I have the perfect outfit." She retorted, as close as she would get to openly defying him, but choosing an outfit was her joy and she would ensure she picked something perfect, that wasn't his favourite red one of course. Whilst he kissed at her neck (something she enjoyed immensely) she fished into her pocket, taking out the phone number that the businessman had scrawled on to a napkin. She would have to do some back tracking, she'd walked out of the coffee shop without so much as a goodbye. Without moving away from him she sighed a phone from her bag. One of a couple she kept, for gambits such as this. Typing the number in quickly she composed a text.
Hey, It's Eleanor. Sorry for disappearing on you earlier. Something came up and you were on the phone so I didn't want to disturb you. Was nice to meet you today.
She kept the screen angled so that he could read as she typed, and of course, the reply that pinged in almost as soon as she had pressed send.
I thought I must have imagined you!
She rolled her eyes, but he mentioned the party again, giving her a time and a place, which was what she had wanted, glad that her vanishing act had only left him wanting more rather than raising suspicions. "Looks like I'm going to a party."

Part of Eric really wished the businessman would’ve told Amelia he wasn’t interested anymore. But he knew that would never happen. No man wasn’t interested in her. Suppose he should feel lucky that he was the one who had her, but right now he just felt malcontent she was out on loan. There was no denying how misogynistic that viewpoint was, but there wasn’t many equality and diversity classes for criminal masterminds out there.
“I suppose I better get things organised then. I’ll head to the workshop and get kitted out. I’ll slip you the earrings and bracelet at the party tonight so we can keep in contact,” he said. Then, as he was trying to work out the logistics in his mind of how he was going to get in and the like he stopped in his tracks. The morning sun was still growing taller in the sky, and the light came through the window and hit off the sheen on Amelia’s midnight kissed hair. F***, she was so beautiful. They couldn’t get through this heist fast enough.
Eric casually headed towards the door, his pace leisurely like he hadn’t a care in the world. But at the last moment he whipped around, ran back to Amelia and pulled her body into his. Without warning or permission he pressed his lips to hers; a kiss in which he took her heart just like he took everything else he wanted. Because she’d done the same thing to him without even trying.
“You know, this heist could lead to a lot of money,” he whispered, curling a few strands of spare hair around her ear as he moved closer to it. “Might be enough to end all this; run away to some twee little cottage on a hill; spend our days having picnics and drinking apple cider with our five children.”
Anyone else would’ve heard it as a serious suggestion. But Eric new Amelia. And she knew him. They could be robbing Donald Trump for she cared and it would still not be ‘enough’. He had enough to buy any house they wanted, and enough for college tuition for ten kids and their kids too, but it was still not enough. Because this really wasn’t about money. To be honest, this was because it was fun. And fun is so much more fun when you share it with someone, as Eric had found out the day him and Amelia had robbed their first car together.
It had been a custom Aston Martin thing in a high-tech underground garage in St Louis. The rich guy who owned it had been so furious he’d abandoned the garage. He still owned it, but kept the security codes under lock and key and never used the garage. Fortunately for Eric, he had the lock and key and since the garage had been disused Eric had taken over it as his (and Amelia’s, but mainly his) ‘workshop’. He didn’t stash things there, no, but he did have equipment. Suits with lightweight neoprene woven into them for a little added protection; mics and radios disguised as all sorts of things; fake passports and birth certificates galore; more than one police scanner and some hacking equipment.
After he’d left Amelia and found his way to the workshop, he used said hacking equipment to register tonight’s security co-ordinator as “Adam Wells”. At the same time he sent a bunch of free flights and accommodation to the Maldives to the original security co-ordinator: because he wasn’t an as*hole all the time. Then he lined up the passports and other ID for ‘Adam Wells’ in his pocket, put on one of his lightweight suits and slipped a small pistol with a silencer on the end of it into his belt. The good thing about America was no one questioned a security agent having weapons. In fact, it might be suspicious he wasn’t carrying something bigger. But he rarely needed them; and it would be more satisfying using his fists on the businessman.
By the time the evening came he had sussed the whole place. The owner was an American who’d used his daddy’s money to start a stock market business. According to the guest list the businessman they’d met was small-time in comparison. His name was ‘Jack Henderson’, owned part of Applebee’s or something, who knows, and he spent most of his time in California; which was where he was from. What struck Eric was that clearly he’d not been home in some time; as there wasn’t a tanline on him.
The host was too busy laughing with the ‘waitresses’ he’d hired for the night, so Eric was taking all the invitations and checking their authenticity before inviting them through to the main lounge. Quite a few Russians, a couple of Chinese men and one Spaniard with a gold watch that looked so heavy it would anchor a boat.
The gentle piano music played through the open-plan condominium. Eric kept looking out through the wall-sized windows and sliding doors for any sign of Amelia coming up the paved pathway just outside.
