This one would either work as a 1x1 or a small group rp, and I'm happy either way.
It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.
The remote island of Thisby at a glance is just that, a scruffy little island, all chalk cliffs and soggy heather. An oppressive mist that never seems far away. With its couple of hundred inhabitants, everyone seems to know everyone and everyone's business by default. One thing that makes this island different from the hundreds like it is the water horses. The Capall Usice, more monster than horse, that start to part from the sea at the beginning of October, and who are raced along the sandy beach on November 1st. The winner takes home the purse, enough money to make you very wealthy, and the respect of everyone on the island. The runners up are lucky if they keep their lives.
To race, you have to be brave, or foolish...
The main town of Skarmouth swells with tourists from the mainland, hungry for the thrill of the race in the weeks preceding the event. People with a taste for blood sport, who will put money over the lives of those who decide to try their luck.
To join simply post a starter.

Life on Thisby was generally quiet, the same people coming into the tavern night in and night out, with the same dull stories. Old men who spent their days at the docks or out at sea. Fishing was the number one source of income on the island, the sea's rich currents lured great shoals of fish. They lured more than fish too.
This late in the year there was one thought close to every islanders mind, the sea's blight that each fall it dashed upon their beaches. The Capaill uisce, pronounced COPple Ooshka, the water horses. Monsters that men with death wishes tried to capture. Those that captured them would train throughout the month of October, the first weeks an elaborate, bloody dance where the dance partners determine how strong the other ones are. It's when riders learn if charms will work on their mounts, how close to the sea is too close, how they can begin to convince their water horses to gallop in a straight line. How long they have between falling from their horses and being attacked. A tense courtship that looks nothing like racing
That is all in the weeks to come, for now life on the island is normal, and dull.
Skarmouth was quaint in the way most british villages were, with squat grey stone buildings and low slate roofs. The roads, where they could be called that were cobbled and almost perpetually slick with moisture, either from the rain or the mist that always seemed to shroud the island like a gossamer cloak. Shop windows were filled with little nick nacks that would be sold on to tourists, a bakery that filled the sea with the warm yeasty smell enough to make your mouth water. The heart of the village was the tavern. A neat little building, all wooden beams and open fires. It was the home of the fishermen and the locals, and owned by a loudmouthed brash drunkard named William.
It was his daughter however that ran the tavern, and tended to the guest rooms when they filled with mainlanders who visited the island with a taste for blood sport. Brinn knew no different, she had worked almost every day, serving drinks to locals and tourists alike often in to the small hours. She was behind the bar now, pouring a pint of ale and sliding it towards the customer with a forced smile. Her thoughts wandered from the bar to the sea, what would this year bring for her?

holy crap I was just thinking about this book the other day and thinking how fun it would be to rp! Unfortunately, I'm overloaded with school and involved in two other rps atm, but when I'm less busy I'd love to come back to this!
