It had already been a hectic morning. Trying to keep two toddlers in line, get them fed and ready for daycare and get herself and her husband ready for work. It was a full time job in itself, and yet she had managed to wrangle all of that, climb in to her rather battled station wagon, littered with wrappers, discarded papers and all sorts of detritus, and make her way through the city traffic to her actual paying job. The traffic was always awful, it drove her crazy, but she still made it in time and hurried up to the bullpen with her satchel bag slung over her shoulder. Her hair was slightly mad, stray strands escaping from the hair tie her uniform slightly askew. She threw her bag down and hurried to the restroom to neaten up, returning to her desk looking far more composed. She usually had a few moments to get herself together, before work landed heavily on her desk. She could see that the captain was already secluded in his office hard at work, and more importantly that Detective Danton was late again. Some time later, after she had sifted through the first paperwork of the day he decided to swan in. He smiled at her as he passed and she couldn't help but smile back, even know she knew she should be annoyed at him.
"Late again." She said with a raise of her eyebrow and a slight gesture towards the Captains office. "He won't be happy, not that you seem to care." She was getting pretty tired of being the middleman between them, seriously, the two were similar in so many ways so why couldn't they just get along. Neither seemed willing to admit that fact, far more hung up on their differences than on the things that made them both such good detectives.

“I’m always late, Sarge, it’s who I am,” Theo responsed with a shrug “and the Captain wouldn’t be happy even if I was on time.”
The Captain didn’t seem to trust Theo as a good detective, seemed to be constantly over his shoulder and babysitting him. He knew it was dumb to act out about it by choosing to be late but honestly he didn’t care. He was a good detective capable of working without the Captain and he wanted to prove it.
Detective Ruiz and the Sarge we’re able to work on their own, so why not him? So he was immature and didn’t put his paperwork in sometimes. That wasn’t a big deal when he caught more bad guys than anyone else in the precinct.
“Being late isn’t going to stop me from closing more cases than Ruiz today,” Theo said with a nod toward his friend’s desk
“Wanna bet?” Ruiz responded with a snort “a case isn’t technically closed until the paperwork’s done. You hate paperwork.”
Val had got him there, and so Theo didn’t respond.
“So, Beth, how are the kids this morning?” Theodore asked with a smile “are they just as adorable as always?”
That would get the Sarge talking about something else. Plus her kids were pretty adorable and it was nice to hear about them. Thei was Beth as almost like a mother figure to him and she didn’t want him to stay annoyed at him. It didn’t feel right.

"I wish you would at least try to get along." She said with a sigh, but she wasn't really mad at him. He was a great cop, he bought in more perps than any other detective and no one was questioning that. But his inability to follow simple orders, especially those direct from the Captain was infuriating, and it seemed to all be in an attempt to antagonise the superior officer. The detectives started off with their competitive nonsense, which was always conductive to a good day of work, if not a little likely to get out of hand. She generally stood back and left them to it, ready to clean up any messes that were too big to get themselves out of. She looked up towards his desk at the mention of her children, There was a picture of the two little boys on her desk, both with blonde hair and bright blue eyes, inherited from their father but a soft round face that was identical to her own. "The little delights" Her voice sarcastic yet amused at the same time. "Well they decided that the food they have eaten for breakfast every day for the last month, is now literal poison so would not touch it." She exhaled, softly. "So I had to rush out to the store and buy some god awful cereal just to try and get some food in to them. So in short, yes, adorable." It had been a difficult decision to have children, her carrier had always been the most important thing in her life and for a woman having children was often the end of a career. "I'm considering selling them on the black market if you know anyone that's interested." She didn't mean it of course. She adored them both, 4 year old Noah was becoming a proper little person and 2 year old Mason was at the stage when absolutely everything was intriguing and usually ended up in his mouth. "And yet still both easier to control than you." She said with a grin.

“Well, he won’t leave me alone about stupid stuff like ties,” Theo said with a sigh “if he left me alone things might be different. I need my space to work, and I don’t want to wear restrictive stuff like ties. I need to do my own thing. Ruiz doesn’t have to dress professionally.”
“Because she’s scary,” Lexi called over “and you’re not fooling anyone.”
“Not fair,” Theo sighed “I can be scary.”
When she talked about her kids, Theo smiled. Beth’s kids were a nightmare but also adorable. Theo liked to babysit on occasion. He wasn’t any good at actually taking care of the kids but they got on well and had fun. And he’d only almost burned the house down one time.
“Yeah, well they don’t have a badge and a gun,” Theo said with a lopsided grin “you gotta give them a chance.”
Theo paused, filtering though the case files on his desk.
“There’s not a single interesting case here,” the man said with a frustrated sigh “either it’s a slow crime day or the Captain is deliberately assigning me boring cases. I think he’s gonna punish me with boring cases until I start wearing a tie or something.”
He didn’t want to give in to the captain, but work was the most exciting thing in his life at the minute. He didn’t want it to get boring or anything, he needed excitement at work. Besides, he liked bragging about good cases he had solved.

(Don’t worry
Okay so I’m thinking while Theo is stuck with boring cases a new one comes up that’s like a direct threat to the 99 somehow or another. It can be a really long-term and complex case to give us a proper plot. We could even potentially have some characters go unclercover or something like that. I’m still fleshing it out. Theo will likely try and work the case in secret to help so the captain doesn’t know.
Also I’m totally thinking we should have a plot where the captain is just basically trying to get a rein on Theo)

“It’s not about the tie, Sarge, there’s a principle at stake,” Theo responded “I would rather worry about catching bad guys than about whether or not I’m wearing a tie or whether the sentence I just said is grammatically correct.”
He smiled a little when she said he wasn’t scary. He wasn’t; he was terrified of Ruiz sometimes and he knew that nobody here felt that way about him. Perps were never scared either. Perhaps if he told a few less jokes? But he would rather be the class clown.
But he laughed when she said nobody was assigning him boring cases.
“C’mon, Beth, you know that isn’t true. The Captain is completely out to get me. He might be in charge around here but he’s all but benching his best detective. All because I won’t follow his rules like an obedient robot. But let me tell you, he might have won the battle, but the war has only just begun.”
He paused, feeling a presence behind him. He winced visibly.
“He’s right behind me, isn’t he?” he said to Beth, though he already knew the answer.

He let out a frustrated noise at his sergeant’s sympathetic nod, looking to see Ryan directly behind him
“Ah, here we go,” Theo said with a smile as he looked between his two superiors “it was redundant to say ‘obedient robot’ because robots are obedient. And I’m still a disgrace to the 99 because I’m not wearing a useless piece of fabric around my neck. I do believe that just about sums it up.”
He looked to the captain with a sigh.
“Look, Captain, what you’re doing is pointless. You’re going to waste so much time punishing me for stupid little things by giving me bad cases when I could be out there solving the real cases. The important cases that need their best detective. Hey, maybe I don’t even need to fight back. Because mark my words, Captain, an important case is going to come up and you’ll need me and I’ll be too busy working on this stuff that anyone could do. I could give these cases to Lexi and she could solve them, and she’s not even a cop.”
“Uh, no thanks!” came some mumbled words from Lexi across the room “I barely do the stuff in my own job description without doing the stuff in yours.”

"What gives you the impression I am punishing you? You really think that if you were being punished then this is all I would do." Oh no, if he was really punishing him Theo wouldn't see the light of day, he'd be stuck in the records room. Ryan could be incredibly petty should he choose to be, luckily for those around him he very rarely resorted to that. "I refuse to continue to engage you in this tie debate, you have been given a direct order by a superior officer." Perhaps if this hadn't become such an issue Ryan would have allowed him to go without the tie, now it was a matter of principle, once challenged he did not back down. That was one thing Theo needed to learn and to learn it quickly. "If these cases are so easy then our 'best detective' will have no problem solving them quickly. I hear you like catching bad guys so why don't you prove it." There was a slightly intimidating tone to his voice, low and deep. His pale blue eyes glinted dangerously. "Why do you refuse to take my orders seriously? Does anyone here know why it's so important to me that you dress appropriately?" He looked about at the other detectives, waiting to see if anyone would respond. Beth decided not to engage, this wasn't her argument. "Highly trained detectives and you can't solve this mystery." He shook his head.

"Call it what you will, Captain," Theo smirked "you're trying to annoy me into doing what you want."
It was true that he did not know precisely why the captain was so concerned with dress, but Theodore was determined that he would figure it out. It was his next case. Unofficially, of course. It appeared that Val did not either, as she diverted her attention back to her computer screen in a bid to not have to answer.
"You know what, Captain, fine. I accept your challenge." Theo responded "I will work through all of these cases by the end of the day. You can keep giving me boring cases and I'll just keep solving them."
"Hon, you just got played!" Lexi called from across the room "You're doing exactly what the captain wants you to do, you're even following orders."
Theo glared at Ryan. Perhaps he had underestimated his captain. Perhaps, though it pained him to think it, he had even met his match.
"Oh, you're good." he conceded "but a challenge is a challenge. Care to make it interesting, Captain? If I win you have to give me the good cases back and do my paperwork for a week. If you win, I'll follow your rules and I'll even give you a week's free overtime."
