Shep knew he couldn’t lead them into a war where they were bound to win. He didn’t want the blood on his hands and he didn’t want to see people he considered friends and family die if they didn’t have to. This is what he didn’t like about being leader. Sure, he preferred having a say in how things were run, but any time something went wrong, it would be on him. Any blood would be on his hands. Any arrests would be his fault. He hated the thought of that. He rubbed his face. “Then we do what we can to postpone this inevitable war,” he mumbled, half to himself and half to Jas. It was no secret that tensions were getting higher between the two gangs and they would eventually have to go to war together. Jas was right. They had to weaken the vultures and the Hensell girl was the best place to start. She had to know by now the best ways to hide her gang activity from her father. They just had to outsmart her - which shouldn’t be hard. “You put Nico on Hensell’s patrol, right?” he asked. There was no doubt his daughter would know exactly where her father was supposed to be. “I’ve got a more important job for him. Tell him that I need to see him when he’s got some time. Medium urgency,” he said. It wasn’t an emergency, but they couldn’t hold off on wearing Vultures for much longer. ƤαƖƖαѕ ✧

“Yeah, but it’s more complicated than that. Jas and Shep and I only have eachother. If I didn’t join the gangs I would have had to leave them and I couldn’t do that to them or myself. We’re close, I guess. I care about them more than not being in the gangs. Besides, I have a purpose there. It’s something bigger than this street or working the till at ridiculous hours in some supermarket.”
When Bael called the gangs paranoid, Luka smiled a bit.
“You could say that. It’s more of a survival thing, like you can only trust the people in the group. If we assumed everyone was our friend we would be in some trouble very quickly. It’s just safer to be wary of everyone who isn’t one of our own.”
It was just easier and safer that way for everyone. Trusting people was a dangerous game to play, which was something Luka knew and something Shep knew too and had warned his little brother about.
At Bael’s final question, he thought for a moment about how to articulate his response.
“Well, they’re wary about trusting people too. If they knew I was helping someone out who wasn’t part of the gang and hadn’t picked a side, they wouldn’t be happy with me. You could end up being a threat to the gang or give me up to Hensell or something like that.”

Jas nodded in response to her brother’s first question, and then at his instructions she smiled and began to quickly type out a message to Nico.
“You got it,” she said as she typed “I’m sure he won’t be too far away right now.”
’Cancel orders. Ghost requests a meeting ASAP. Medium urgency’
Jas could tell her brother was stressed and she moved a little closer to him, offering him a smile. She didn’t like to see him like this, though she knew it was just because of the job. The stress got to him sometimes, and neither she nor Shep could help that.
“It’s all going to be okay. We just need to make the Vultures unravel and there might not even be a war. If we can find a sneaky way to bring them down we might avoid most of the fighting that might have happened otherwise.” she assured him.
It was the best they could hope for right now. Jas knew how Shep felt; she also considered the gangs her family and she didn’t want to lose them, though not as much as she’d hate to lose her brothers. She didn’t want this war to make her lose either of them.
She loved her brothers, who’d tried so hard to shield her even when it was impossible. Who would always try to protect her because that was what big brothers were supposed to do. She could not, would not, lose them.
They just had to have faith that it was all going to work out. It was the only way it ever would.

Bael mearly grunted in response “Must be nice, I guess.” Having someone he could trust was such a rare thing thing, mostly because he always felt there was someone out to get him. He never found himself capable of trusting anyone. It was the same the other way around. He had his exceptions, of course, but thinking about it made his chest ache.
“Makes sense, in a way” Bael muttered. He couldn't say anything else about it, mostly because he was very well aware that he had a very similar mindset. He found it much easier to think everyone was an enemy and to avoid them entirely. To him, it wasn't worth getting hurt over uncertainty.
Though, he hated how paranoid it made him. It made him isolate himself, even when he was in a crowd. It made him think that if he made one wrong move, they'd instantly turn on him and that'd be it.
Bael let out a small laugh “yeah, you can't trust me, because you don't know me. Though, maybe if I can think of a way for it to benefit me, I'd do it.” He shrugged “Just as long as we're on the same page here, then I have no reason to turn you in.”

Jordie nearly let out a squeak of surprise when someone blocked his path, heart rate sky rocketing, thinking that the clerk had caught him stealing the dumb candy bar. His head snapped up, dark eyes wide with fear, before realizing... it was a woman.
She looked kinda familiar. He was pretty sure he had seen her on the streets before, but he couldn't place where, features scrunching up in thought before he realized that she wanted him to follow her. There wasn't any way that he could get away, either. Just like his brother, he was pretty small for his age, and that meant that the woman could probably just pick him up and throw him over her shoulder f she really wanted to.
So instead of running off he ducked his head a little and followed her a couple isles down, anxious, because what was she going to say?
His heart sank a little at the scolding, scowling at the ground, shrugging when he was asked if his name was Jordie. H peeked up just a little when she said that she was glad that the medicine worked well, nodding a little, looking uncomfortable. "I just wanted to get 'im something for getting th medicine for me. He doesn't need to know how I got it. Other kids at school do it all the time." He defended immediately, although by the look on his face, it was clear to see that he felt guilty about it.
Nico had always tried to teach Jordie about rights and wrongs, and stealing was definitely one of them, because it could get others in trouble and if it was at a store then the store would lose money. He'd never wanted that and he didn't like the thought of it, either, he just really wanted to do something nice for his brother.
His cheeks puffed out in indignance when he was told he shouldn't be on this side of down and gave another shrug, folding his arms stubbornly, "It's not any more dangerous than my side." He shot back, shifting a little, looking just a little bit worried about someone else telling him it was dangerous here.
(Oooh yeah, that'd be a good idea! And I'm getting Nicos response up now!)

Nico didn't mind patrolling with others, most of the time anyway, and he'd quickly discovered that he got along fine wth most of the other gang members.
So he actually found himself a little bit relaxed as he patrolled with Cora, not giving much in the ways of conversation, he was still pretty tired from staying up the past few nights just to check up on his brother and make sure that the medicine had actually worked. But.. it wasn't horrible or awkward.
Instead, even as he yawned every now and then, he found himself making a couple of comments here and there to her and even splitting up once or twice to cover more ground. Currently the two were together, and getting closer to Vulture territory, a faint memory of the convenience store bubbling in his mind, before pushing it down.
it was a shame, too, because Jordie was right: they did have the best soup in town.
The Peruvian paused when he felt his phone vibrate, checking his phone with a frown. "Hey." He called out to Cora, rereading the message once more, before looking up at her. "Orders are cancelled. Ghost wants a meeting. " He told her, rubbing his eyes once more, placing a hand on his hip as he tried to figure out what this was about. Will be there ASAP He informed Jas, a frown still playing on his lips as he slipped the phone back in his pocket, sighing inwardly because he knew that he wouldn't be able to figure anything out from that text. That was the point, though, and he knew it. So he just jerked his head towards the meeting place, hoping that his little adventure into Vulture territory had not been discovered.

(Probably super short x sorry!)
“It is,” Luka nodded “we look out for one another, but especially Jas. You know how it is with big brothers and little sisters. We try and protect her as much as we possibly can. The whole gang protects one another, it’s nice that way.”
Luka was wary of people too, didn’t really like to trust people. He was aware he didn’t trust Bael; he couldn’t trust anyone. He could trust his family to some extent but even they might ultimately have to betray him in order to protect themselves. Shep would throw him under the bus if it was between protecting Luka and protecting Jas, and Luka knew that. He didn’t resent that; he would want Shep to prioritise Jas.
He was glad of what the other male said next, that he wouldn’t get him in trouble unless it really benefited him. Luka did much of the dirty work for the gang, committing some of the worst crimes alongside Shep. That prevented Jas or any of the others from being at risk of extremely long sentences. If they got convicted they’d go away for a while, but Luka and Shep would be away for a while.
“That’s okay, we understand eachother. I can manage it when we’re both open about the fact that we can’t trust one another and we can’t be trusted. I prefer to know where I stand, and I’m sure you’re the same. We’re on the same page.”

Bael just frowned at his comment, saying “Sure.” He wasn't quite sure if he understood the reasoning behind it, but he's seen things like it before. It wasn't something he got to experience first hand though.
Bael gave him a nod in response “In a place like this, that's pretty much all that matters, a sort of understanding.”
He stood up and walked over to the window, which was the only one left unbroken. He pulled open the blinds and peered outside. The rain had finally stopped. With the sun back out, he squinted at the light before closing the blinds.
“It's stopped raining” Bael stated “You'd best be going on your way.” He was somewhat relieved that he didn't have to keep conversing anymore, but a part of him was saddened that it might be his last chance to talk to another person in a long time. He shook it off, running a finger through his gross hair. It would at least give him a chance to take a shower.

“You’re wrong, it’s very dangerous, especially for a kid. Your brother keeps you from here for a reason. There are bad people around here.” Gianna said
It was probably better if she didn’t say anything more than that. Partly because she wasn’t one of the bad people, but also because Nico had said that Jordie had no idea what was really happening with the gangs.
When she said that he’d wanted to get a gift for his brother for getting him the medicine, she smiled.
“It’s very sweet that that’s what you wanted to do, but there are better ways of doing it that aren’t going to get you lumped in with those bad people. There are lots of criminals and hooligans in our area, and you don’t want people to think you’re just another lost cause teenager with a record before they’re 16. I’ll give you the money to buy the chocolate, just don’t steal. Your brother would be so mad at me if I let you steal. It doesn’t matter what the other kids at school do, the other kids at school aren’t Nico’s little brother.”
She looked out for Nico, and she’d look out for Jordie just the same. After everything Nico had said to Gia the last time they spoke, the woman was just determined to make sure she kept the kid out of trouble. She owed it to Nico, who wanted a good life for his brother, and she owed it to Jordie himself, who deserved to have someone there to keep him on the right path. He seemed to be a kid after all.
“I’ll keep an eye on you when you come out here, but I can’t protect you so you’re going to have to be careful and be safe. If you are going to come out here, make sure it’s not on your own” Gia said

“That’s right. It’s the easiest way to do things.” Luka agreed
He watched Bael open the blinds, and he too noticed that the rain had stopped. It was time to go now, and check on his siblings perhaps. Or maybe just patrol the territory. As long as Jas and Shep knew he was safe they didn’t really mind where he went or what he did.
“Okay, well then I’ll be heading off now.” Luka said with a nod.
He started to head to the door, only stopping briefly to look over his shoulder.
“And if you need me, you know where to find me. Let me know.” Luke said.
With that, he disappeared out into the streets. He couldn’t tell whether or not that conversation with Bael had actually affected anything, but he would find out soon enough if it had. For better or worse.
(Okay cool so Luka is now free. I’ve also got Cora free.)

Shep offered a small smile when Jas moved closer. Yeah, it was his responsibility to protect her and Luka, but that didn’t mean he took comfort and support from his little sister’s presence. He nodded. “That’s where Nico comes in,” he said. He knew the boy had a brother and may not want to go into Vulture territory like that, but Nico was their best shot. Shep would offer to take care of the boy. Keep an eye on him. He looked up when Nico entered the house. “Nico,” he greeted with a slight nod. He tried to build personal relationships with every member of the gang. Sure, they may not be able to truly trust each other, but sometimes your life ended up in the hands of your fellow gang member. Personal relationships would help foster the loyalty he needed. “I’ve got a job for you,” he said. He’d do it himself, if possible, but he wasn’t ready to leave Luka completely in charge yet. Plus, he and his siblings were more well known than Nico. “Tensions are growing with the Vultures and we decided our best bet was to take them down through Hensell’s girl. I’m going to need you to go undercover into Vulture territory. weasel into their gang. Befriend her and come to me once you know how she hides her gang activity. We anonymously get it to Hensell and he Vulture will be done for,” he said, staring evenly at Nico. “And big brother to big brother, your little brother is free to stay here. I know what it’s like to have siblings in a life like this and I’ll protect him.” In a way I can never protect my own He added silently. Jas and Luka would never be safe, being part of the gang. Jas sat beside her brother, watching as he gave Nico his instructions. While Nico and Shep were talking, Jas’s role involved simply just observing his response to the instructions he was given. Picking up on anything subliminal in Nico’s body language, anything that told her there were going to be issues.
She nodded when her big brother assured Nico that they’d take care of Jordie. That was good, and it was a promise she knew Shep would keep, too, because it was an issue close to his heart. Jas wasn’t stupid; she knew he had tried for years to protect Luka and herself from the dangers of the life they led. Sadly it just wasn’t possible. But they were okay. Jas was tougher than she ever thought she could have been, and it was comforting to know she could take care of herself no matter what happened. She was strong and smart and she probably wouldn’t be the person she was otherwise. The good parts and the bad.
But when Shep had finished speaking, Jas spoke up herself.
“Cora ‘Silver-Tongue’ Hensell is the weak link, if we break her the gang collapses. Send her father into a fit of rage with the revelation that his daughter is a criminal and has been lying to him and the Vultures go down. If you can’t get it out of Hensell herself then try the Pyne girl or the Orvik twins; one of them is bound fo have dirt on her that you can use. Contact us if you need anything, contact Shep directly if you’re in trouble. You know the routine.”

(Crazy short, sorry!)
It was a little bit later and Luka had decided to just take a walk for a while, clear his head. Check on the patrols around the territory and see how the gang members were doing. Basic stuff like that. It kept him busy, anyway.
He ran his hands through his hair, thinking for a moment. Shep had given Luka the position of second-in-command, but Luka wouldn’t be ready to lead if he lost his brother. And Shep knew that, too; Luka could tell. And he knew that Jas would not be ready for any increased responsibility, and that Luka was not sure that he was ready for having the responsibility of big brother like Shep did.
He cared really deeply for his sister, but he wasn’t sure he could look after her as thoroughly as Shep somehow managed to. If anything happened to his brother, could Luka manage on his own?
He shook his head, focussing instead as he walked forward, heading towards an area with a patrol he seemed to recall was being performed by a relatively new member of the gang, someone whose name he didn’t really know yet. It wouldn’t hurt to introduce himself to this person, would it?
