Ellie Jacobs "the glass is neither empty nor full. it is what it is. a glass." Ellie was wandering. She wasn't exactly sure where she was going, or what she was doing at the moment, but she knew that she needed to do something - anything. Maybe she could go and help in the makeshift hospital. It would keep her hands busy at least. But then again, she wasn't sure if she had the patience to be ordered around this morning, no, it was probably a little too early for that. Ellie was one of the ones who had woken up early for her entire life, rising with the sun being a common thing for her, she'd never really minded the extra hours she gained in a day, but now, now was a different story. In all of the zombie apocalypse movies, the characters are always running too and fro, fighting off hoards of the undead, and getting killed off left, right and centre. The reality, however, was much different. The amount of sitting around had quickly grown on Ellie's nerves, and she found herself wandering off alone more often than not now, if only to spare everyone else her sharp words because of her boredom. Sighing, she figured she had better find something useful to do, and so she headed for the outdoor courts, where there was bound to be some of the younger kids running around. Due to the earliness of the day, it was unlikely any of the older kids was there yet to keep an eye on things. It was better than doing nothing she figured.
Cameron 'Cam' Holling "for a true hero is not measured by their size or their strength, but by the strength of their heart."
Cameron was getting breakfast. He wasn't too sure where Lexa was, so he tried to keep a casual eye out for her as he slowly moved through the line. He wasn't going to around asking every single person he found if they had seen her (something he kind of wanted to do right now) simply because he knew that Lexa would find out, and then she would roll her eyes at him and tell him that he needed to worry less. That was hard in the middle of an apocalypse, and something that he had never been too good at in the first place. Biting at the inside of his cheek, Cameron gave a distracted thanks as he received his food, and then hesitated as he looked around the eating area in the gym. Normally Lexa would at least wait for him for breakfast, so that they could sit together, but today she had apparently decided to go off on her own. Cameron looked around, debating whether or not to take his meal outside to eat. Then his eyes landed on someone who seemed familiar. A boy who he thought had been in the grade below him, a boy with blue eyes and reddish brown hair. He approached slowly, and stopped at the table, not yet sitting down. "Simon, right?" He asked hesitantly, he thought he remembered him from some assembly or something. Cameron just hoped that he was right - he really just wanted someone to sit with for breakfast. Lexa Holling "fear. fear is the relinquishment of logic. the willing relinquishing of reasonable patterns. we yield to it or fight it, but we can not meet it halfway."
Lexa was running. She'd woken up with the sun and had slipped out of the room Cam and her had decided to sleep in the classroom block. Neither of them had been able to sleep with all of the noise in the gym for the first week after this whole thing had happened, and had decided, along with a few others, to find their own, much quieter place to sleep. Although sleep was still hard to achieve, with the need for constant alertness, at least she wasn't sharing a room with half of the school now. So that was something. Lexa had gone to shake Cam awake that morning as she glanced out at the slowly lightening sky, but had paused, and then decided not to for two reasons. One was that Cam actually appeared to be in a rather peaceful sleep, something that was rare for him since this had all started, and two was because she didn't really want to hear his warnings to her to be careful, or to brush off his offers to go with her, even though he didn't really want, just to make sure that she wasn't alone out there. Lexa didn't even know what Cam meant when he said 'out there', it wasn't like she ever left the school grounds, she hardly even left the area surrounding the buildings the students occupied - she just couldn't stand being cooped up inside all of the time. She had to get out and do something. There was no point in sitting around and waiting for someone else to fix the problem for her, oh no, she needed to be part of the solution to the problem. Ending her run at the gym, Lexa paused for a moment, now looking out across the grass surrounding the gym, the morning sun glinting off the still dewy green blades.

Simon looked up as he heard a hesitant sounding voice saying his name. The speaker was a boy with dark hair, someone he was almost sure he recognised as a boy who had been in the year above. Not that any of that really mattered nowadays anyway.
“Yeah, that’s right,” the boy nodded before adding “and you’re Cameron, right?”
Cameron Holling, he was sure. He had heard of the Holling twins – Cam and Lexa. Simon knew his sister Iris was much more well-known than he, because she was friendlier and more popular and her dressing style was…distinctive. She wasn’t exactly easily forgettable.
He nodded towards the seat near him, offering the older boy the opportunity to sit down if he wanted to. It paid to have familiar faces around here, after all, even if it wasn’t a good idea to let anyone get too close to you.
He would sit and have his breakfast, perhaps with Cam, and then he would probably head down to the science classrooms and see if they needed any help. There was almost always someone there; the classroom was never empty as some of the brightest students worked tirelessly to find a cure.

{{ hey @angelfur just want to check where you're planning on going with your character, just because I want to make sure that they aren't too focused on finding a cure because that's kind of the job for the scientist trope. the healer would be more focused on actually fixing injuries people have, occasionally helping the scientist yes, but the healers main thing is taking care of the already injured people (: if you want to explore finding the cure, that's fine -- but maybe switch to the scientist trope instead, or have a secondary non-trope character who can help the scientist with the cure. }}

Cameron 'Cam' Holling "for a true hero is not measured by their size or their strength, but by the strength of their heart."
Cam was only slightly surprised when Simon knew his name. Most people had heard of the Holling twins in one way or another - whether it be from one of Lexa's boredom-driven pranks, which had often landed her in detention, or Cameron's notoriety for being the complete opposite to his twin. With a small smile, he gladly sat down as Simon nodded towards the chair near him. A silent breath of relief escaping him - he hadn't realised how much he had dreaded the thought of sitting alone until that exact moment. Suffice to say the apocalypse had been hard on Cam as it had taken away the one constant in his life - Lexa. However, now was not the time to dwell on such things, not during breakfast. Scooping some of the greyish looking porridge onto his spoon, he took a few quiet mouthfuls, just as he normally would, half-waiting for Lexa to start talking for both of them, as she normally did. After two bites of the unflavourful mush before him, Cam realised that Lexa wasn't here to talk for him, and so he would have to make conversation on his own. It would be rude to sit in silence after he had approached Simon. "So..." He began, trailing off as he leant back in the chair, poking at his food with the spoon, not really feeling like eating any more of it. "Food's gotten boring. We must need to do another supply run soon." He tried to make conversation about something they could both talk about. Cameron had never been one for small talk, but he had always needed some kind of prescence around him, although whenever he tried to explain this, all he got was funny looks.

There were a few moments of awkward silence where Simon wondered if he should say something, just to try and ease the awkwardness. Instead he just ate some of the rather unappetising food, and it turned out he didn’t need to try to make conversation however, because the other boy started to speak then.
“Yeah, it kind of has got boring,” the boy agreed before adding “I think there’s a supply run soon. Can’t decide if I want to help on that one or not. I know my sister won’t want me to, she doesn’t like it when I leave.”
Iris was normally such a laid back person, which was why her protectiveness of her younger brother came as a surprise to people. She was a very maternal girl, and loved to care for the younger students, but her brother especially. She didn’t like him going out and putting himself in danger. She was barely coping with him being in the day-to-day dangers that came with the apocalypse.
He only hoped she’d figure out how to relax when it came to her brother. Simon was getting older all of the time and he just didn’t want Iris hanging over him all of the time, he was almost grown up now and definitely capable enough of helping out around here.
“We aren’t getting anywhere with the cure, either,” the boy admitted “I’ve been helping Icarus whenever I can but there’s something stopping us from having a breakthrough.”

Cameron 'Cam' Holling "for a true hero is not measured by their size or their strength, but by the strength of their heart."
Cam nodded along, biting his tongue when Simon mentioned his sister not wanting him to help with the supply run, because she didn't like him leaving. Cam understood that only too well, but from the opposite side to Simon. He was the one fretting over Lexa and constantly wanting to know her whereabouts in this dangerous world. After sixteen years of being the one to watch her back, and be the voice of reason when she tried to take things a little too far, seeing her actually have the chance to do all of the daring things she had wanted was hard for Cam. He wanted her safe and sound right beside him. Another part of him, however, wanted to be just as brave and fearless as her. "Let me know if you do. I might come along." Cameron forced the words out before he could change his mind. He didn't actually like the idea of going out into zombie territory, but he also wanted to do his part, and if there was no supplies to be divided and stored, then there wasn't anything for him to do. He may as well go out and help find the things he normally sorted and served. A heaviness made Cam's shoulders droop slightly as he heard that they were no closer to a cure. He had never had the sort of logical mind to find himself in the science labs with those working on the cure, but had been happy enough to fetch them anything they needed. "Maybe you just need a fresh set of eyes." He suggested with a shrug, as Simon mentioned something stopping them from their breakthrough. "I heard it works most of the time." He added on quietly after a seconds pause. He shrugged. He didn't really know much about that side of things, but figured putting the suggestion out there was worth a try - they had probably already done it, but hey, you never knew.

Icarus had been up for a while mixing a bunch of things together. At one point he accidentally mixed liquid nitrogen and helium. That did not end so well. He kept thinking it may be best to sleep but then again maybe he could get away with a few more hours....more like days awake trying hard to find a cure. Maybe if he added some garlic? Wait garlic? He jumped as his stomach growled at the idea of garlic bread.
"Food can wait." He told himself as he continued mixing a bunch of stuff. He knew he was torturing himself by not eating, sleeping, drinking or going to the bathroom but all that could wait. He had a job to do and he was not screwing up by messing around like that. "It can wait...." He whispered to himself again.

“That would be nice, if you did,” Simon nodded “but I understood if you don’t want to.”
It was terrible out there, and Simon would not blame anyone for not wanting to leave this place. As long as they were doing their part in other ways it didn’t really matter. Simon kind of understood why his sister didn’t want him out there.
“I think I’m going to go, if Icarus can spare me and Iris doesn’t freak out.”
Icarus was essentially their lead scientist. the one leading the search for the cure. Simon often pulled all-nighters with him in the lab, and had felt bad leaving for even a few hours sleep as he did last night. He knew the other boy wasn’t eating either recently, and so he had grabbed some extra food to deliver to the other student to make sure he got at least some food in him.
“You’re right. We need to look at it differently, come at it from a different angle. I had an idea a while ago but the formula just wouldn’t balance, something about it wasn’t right. I might bring it up down at the labs today, maybe we can figure something out.”
His ideas weren’t as elegant as some of the older students, but the science was always sound and with their help he might be able to come up with a solution. Maybe not. But he wanted to believe that they would figure it out eventually.

{{ I'll let Simon go Semper, so Apollo can rp too (: }}Cameron 'Cam' Holling "for a true hero is not measured by their size or their strength, but by the strength of their heart."
Cameron nodded silently, trying not to think too hard about the prospect of going out there, away from the relative safety of the school and potentially having to fight off a horde of zombies. Simon had added on that he understood if he didn't want - everyone would. They were all still so young and no one really wanted to risk their lives out there. But it was something that had to be done as Lexa would say. It was time for Cam to get out of his comfort zone he thought, and that way he would be able to keep a better eye on Lexa, who was bound to volunteer for the trip with or without him. "I'll be there." He muttered determinedly. "I don't know enough about that stuff to help, sorry - but it certainly sounds like you do. Bring it up when you go down - revisiting the idea wouldn't hurt, at this point something is better than nothing." He said, finally dropping his spoon and pushing the bowl away. He knew he would be hungry later, but he just didn't have the stomach for the warm mush right now. "You probably need to get down to the lab, hey. Don't let me hold you up, I should probably go find Lexa anyway, make sure she's not getting herself into trouble." He said the words with a soft smile at the mention of his twin, eyes flicking around the gym once more, making sure she wasn't with the group of people who were already up and working out, sparring together.

(Okay cool!)
Simon nodded when the other boy said that he probably needed to head to the lab. He did, and he didn’t want to leave Icarus on his own without someone to work alongside him. It could get lonely in those labs.
“Alright,, well good luck with that,” Simon smiles as he watched the other boy leave.
The fifteen-year-old has finished his food and so he cleared everything up, taking with him only the food he had set aside to bring to Icarus. He left the gym, heading through all of the hallways. The different classrooms flashed by him as he tried to remember what class was taught in each one. It was how he kept some normalcy, reminded himself that the world had once been different and could be again,
After a little while of walking, however, he finally arrived at the labs. Giving a soft knock to alert Icarus to his prescence, the boy entered the lab, and could see that the older boy was (as always) hard at work.
“Hey, I brought you some food,” Simon said as he put it to one side so Icarus could grab it if he wanted to “you really should eat, I can do that if you want.”
Simon was already putting a lab coat on, slipping on some safety glasses. He was going to be working in here anyway, whether he took over what Icarus was doing right now do he could eat, or whether he just did his own thing.

The teen was obviously exhausted, dark circles were under his eyes and eyes were also bloodshot from being awake for so long working. Actually it seemed as though he was ready to collapse, he was swaying as he worked. "It can wait...." He muttered while trying to get this cure done. Maybe a little sleep...no! "Could you get me...get me..." He swayed before promptly collapsing. He pushed himself too far.

Simon has seen what was about to happen moments before it did as the boy started to sway and so he was just able to catch the older boy, not able to hold his weight properly. He had to bend his knees slowly to lay the other male on the ground and putting him in the recovery position.
When Icarus started to stir, Simon was beside him. After a moment, once the other boy was properly awake, Simon moved to help him stand up once again.
“This needs to stop, Icarus. You’re going to work yourself to death and then you can’t help anyone. You have to let me help you a little bit here.” Simon said concernedly
He just wanted to help this boy, and he knew he was set on his goal of developing a cure. He knew, however, that a cure would never be found if Icarus made himself ill by working himself too hard
“You just need to eat something, I promise it will help. And if you decide you want to go and get some sleep I can manage here on my own. The cure will still be there waiting to be found.”
