inspired by the age old trend of groups of friends finding themselves in heaps of trouble, the forest centers around a group of highschoolers who slowly discover the truth behind their small town.
firesbrooke community high school has its share of weird. from secret passages, to strange school rituals, most students note that the school is unsettling to say the least. however, in more recent years students have begun to wonder why. case and point, firesbrooke's own cryptid club. the club’s sole purpose is to track down legendary creatures, and with new leadership, the club has taken a direct interest in firesbrooke itself.
this rp focuses on the adventures of the club, twelve students thrust into a hidden world of magic and mystery. each student has a core archetype attached associated with them to help flesh out characters. they are as follows: the dreamer, the realist, the hero, the caregiver, the explorer, the rebel (claimed), the lover (claimed), the creator, the jester, the sage, the magician (claimed), and the ruler (claimed,“Stevie Hackett” 16, f, junior, head of cryptid club). these are more suggestions rather than guidelines, however, so don’t feel like your characters has to fit into their role 100%.
if you are interested, feel free to help! right now i’m currently fleshing out the locations and overall atmosphere of the setting and worlds, so anything you could add to that would be a great help. if you have any questions, feel free to ask them! i have plenty of information that i have yet to put into direct words, so i’ll answer them to the best of my knowledge. if you want to claim a character, i do ask that you actively participate on this thread, even if it’s just to discuss group dynamics and character creation. thank you for your interest!

Great! This sounds exciting. Also for the roles, what would you say the difference is between dreamer and lover? Because I like those roles but I'm also kinda picturing them as very similar/the same unless it's not time to claim roles

Yeah, so the lover is more driven by passion and emotion, while the dreamer is more idealistic and imaginatitive. They're close, but not necessarily the same.

Hmmm the character I have in mind would fit both but maybe the loved? I'm on. College tour right now but I'll be on later

okay here's some hot takes if you want more help deciding cause i'm finally out of class smh
the dreamer v the lover
- major goal is to be happy, and for those around them to be happy
- major goal is to find love, whether it be in a romantic way or a friendship/family way
- usually followers rules/dislikes punishment especially for "doing wrong"
- not necessarily a rule follower, more at the whims of their passion and emotions, doesn't necessarily see black and white issues
- wants to do what they see is "right"
- desires intimacy and relationships over most everything else
- often more bright and bubble, the optimist or heart of the group
- more friendly, people oriented
- biggest words to describe them are naive, innocent, idealistic
- biggest words to describe them are passionate, reckless, amiable
honestly though, these are kinda core archetypes that you could google if you wanted to do more research. i'm sure there's countless other sources that could tell you the direct opposite if you wanted to mold any character into one of them. this is just how i kinda view the two, if that makes sense?

Oooh that's useful. She hits points of both but probably more the lover so I'll take that. I'm just sucky and indecisive.
But I also just got out of my college tour so I'm here if you need help with anything

nice nice
i'm not sure what i need help with the most at this point. i have a list of just bullet pointed ideas if we wanted to work with those to begin with? they are all about the world and such so maybe they'd make a good start? idk, it's really whatever you are in the mood for. i can always work on this behind the scenes.

okay here are my "notes" as of right now.
Okay i need to work out this world so like wowza let me bullet point ideas
- Monsters coming from one world/parallel universes(?) into ours
- Witchcraft and magic from other world
- Maybe like contrast? So our world is like “the realm of light” and they’re “the realm of shadow” so not all evil or malevolent, but more ancient and more powerful
- I kinda want to go old school witchcraft with the magic? So like spellbooks and rituals and charms and curses. Maybe magic is more of a buff than an attack?
- Okay for monsters idk how old school i want to go. Full on cryptids and vampires and such, or more human-eque figures that just inspired those legends
- I think i want most monsters to at least be based around a cryptid or a legend of one, maybe the regular citizens of the realm of shadow are more twisted humans. Maybe more animalistic? To play of the more ancient, but more powerful tone?
- Definitely want these kids to take on the role of the protectors of the realm of light
- maybe lean into a monster hunter type thing along with the mystery?
- Portal or gate between the two realms in giant gnarled oak tree in the forest cause that edgy or something
- small town aesthetic for firesbrook
- firesbrooke needs a better name, like really
- the school itself should have some importance, i really like the idea of having multiple mysteries going on for the group to try and solve (ooc the notes that followed this are secret so shhhh)
- have joiners be able to create side characters from both realms
- ooooo just got an idea, maybe the worlds/realms/whatever layer on top of each other. so like if something big happens in one world their are often ripple effects in the other? and areas (called gates probably) that are set for people to travel between the two.
- maybe have random occurrences in which the barrier is so weak people randomly get transferred from one area to another
- i know i want the realm of shadows to know about the realm of light, but not vice versa? i need a reason for this tho.

Sorry. We stopped for dinner. Hmmm. I'd really be good with anything. Fleshing out the town/school could be interesting if you need it. Otherwise i could help with fleshing out the realm of shadows or any interactions with the normal world. I'm not sure what you still need or what you want to work on yourself

I'd love your help fleshing out the town, and I think that would be a great place to start!
So I definitely want the small town aesthetic for firesbrooke (rip, still really in need of a better name), so I feel a lot of the people know each other and know most of the places. I wanted it to be surrounded by dense forests, but I didn't really have a state/location picked out for sure. I was thinking we could maybe start with that? So like general places/stores/families that are well-known/etc.

Small town aesthetic is the best. Hmmm any idea for state? If not I can do a quick google search for some nice wooded areas. Or climate? Like do you want something warmer or something with harsher winters? And for places do you want just names or like little descriptions?
|
|
|
Post by lazy penguin on Oct 13, 2018 9:58:40 GMT -5
Honestly it is. I didn't have any state in mind, but I definitely wanted one that went through all four seasons, so not a real warm climate, but not a state that's too north either. It's whatever you prefer, I think if you just have names we could work on the descriptions and location in the town together, but if you have a really cool idea for a place feel free to share it as well!

Colorado? Ohio? Oregon? Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin are nice and have a nice balance of seasons but the winters can be a bit harsh. From my research it looked like the ones above had slightly more mild winters so there's just a couple ideas We can definitely work on them together. I used to have a little college rp and had a list of locations for there and can see how many can be adjusted for a small town
Okay so I found the list of places I used. This was for more of a small city/large town but if you like any of the names or general ideas we can change the descriptions to fit a small town
Main Street Coffee Main Street Coffee is one of the biggest coffee shops in the city. They're well known throughout the city and a popular hangout place for teenagers and adults. There's rumors that they're trying to buy Java Drop.
Java Drop Java Drop is a much smaller coffee shop. Their prices are a bit higher than Main Street, but they have a much quieter and more homey environment, making it a popular study place for the university students. The owner, Jill Lewis, has put everything into the coffee shop after her husband died and does her best to know each customer by name.
The Square The Square is a large mall near the center of Orwell Junction. There are many stores here, selling almost anything a young college student would need. The food court is a popular hangout for high school and college students.
Orwell Junction Zoo Orwell Junction has one of the biggest zoos in the state. They have many different animals of different species and often hold special or educational events for the public and local schools. They also hire college students over the summer and have limited internships available.
FLIX Movie Theater FLIX is a local movie theater that tends to have a lot of deals for college students, as well as employing them over the summer and duro the school year. They have cheaper prices than many movie theaters, which makes them a popular choice for all kinds of people.
Orwell Art Museum Mainly, this museum has art from graduates of Red Rock University, while also displaying art from students. They try to hold occasional art fairs and other things to try and get more of the public to come since for the most part, it's just filled with students sent by their professors. It's located near the edge of town and has a beautiful garden surrounding it where some art students like to relax at and paint.
Thomas J. Blackwell Park TJB Park has fun all year round! There's a small pond in the center that can be used for swimming in the summer. There's also a large hill that makes a good place to sit and relax in summer, but is a very popular sledding and snowboarding hill in the winter. There's many little spots (including bathrooms, pavilions, and volleyball nets) to rent out for parties, and many hiking trails winding through the woods.
Red Rock Beach Red Rock Beach sits on the shores of Red Rock Lake, a large lake. Popular activities on/in the lake include swimming, kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, fishing, and boating. For those that prefer to stay dry, there's an ice cream stand and a few little restaurants near the beach. There's also plenty of room for activities such as volleyball, frisbee, football, kite flying, and tanning. In the winter, the lake is a popular place for ice fishing.
Henderson Memorial Hospital Henderson Memorial is a large hospita founded by William F. Henderson. There's a statue of him in front of the hospital and, as a tribute to Mr. Henderson (a former professor at RRU), the hospital works closely with Red Rock students interested in the medical field.
YouFit YouFit is a new gym that opened up only a few miles away from Red Rock University. It has the newest equipment and seems to cater specifically to the young adult age group. There's a total of three pools, four gyms, two tracks (one for running and one for walking), three rooms for classes, a weight room, a cardio space, a dojo, and a cycling studio. I

Nice, I like them a lot! I've been kinda doing some thinking, so I'll add my favorites to the list below in italics so we can edit them later.
- Main Street Coffee (Main Street Coffee is one of the biggest coffee shops in town. They're well known throughout Firesbrooke and a popular hangout place for teenagers and adults. There's rumors that they're trying to buy Java Drop.
- Java Drop (Java Drop is a much smaller coffee shop. Their prices are a bit higher than Main Street, but they have a much quieter and more homey environment, making it a popular study place for students. The owner, ____, has put everything into the coffee shop after her husband died and does her best to know each customer by name.
- FLIX Movie Theater (FLIX is a local movie theater that tends to have a lot of deals for local students, as well as employing them over the summer and during the school year. They have cheaper prices than most movie theaters, making them a popular choice for all kinds of people.)
- Henderson Memorial Hospital (Henderson Memorial is a large hospital founded by William F. Henderson. There's a statue of him in front of the hospital and, as a tribute to Mr. Henderson)
- Minerva's Bookstore (bookstore)
- florist
- bed & breakfast
- general store
- ice cream shop?
- diner
- police station and fire station
- antique store
- town hall
- bank
- cemetery (& church?)
- Firesbrooke Community High School (fbc) (and another school for k-8th graders that needs a name)
- The Orchard (once a pristine private high school, the Orchard was bought by a realtor who turned it into the 'mall' it is now. The Orchard is a collection of small shops, and few big brands (like a pizza hut or something smh), and a small bowling alley/minigolf/arcade popular with students.)
- some parks but i want to hold off until we nail the climate
Notable People/Families (an ongoing list, feel free to add people)
- Garrett Richmond, local mayor
- Joan Hackett, town sheriff
- Darryl Clegg, fire chief
- Dani Hawes, principle of fbc
- Tristan Bird, history teacher at fbc and staff sponsor for the cryptid club
- Minerva Flynn, wealthy librarian/bookstore owner
- Johnny Berger, known handiman, always helping people out
- Fannie Rawlings, runs the local dinner
- Bianka Newman, runs the bed & breakfast
As for ideas for the state, I kinda did Colorado or like, Wisconsin. Idk, if you had a preference I'm down for whatever.

Okay so should we figure out names for the other places before descriptions?
Hmmm. Well I want to go to Colorado but know more about Wisconsin so I'm good with either. With Wisconsin, the winters can get a little rough but not horrible (I'd say the worst we face is like two feet of snow and -20 weather. Sometimes worse but not often)

Honestly I just chose the two I was most familiar with. (side note, are you from wisconsin? cause i'm from north illinois and that's kinda crazy). How about Wisconsin then, since we both have a better guess at the climate there.
Yeah I think that would be a good start, but sometimes having a good description can help with the name? So if you have any cool ideas, I'd love to hear them. If not, let's start on names then!

Okay cool. I'm not familiar with Colorado but I want to go there. Actually I am. Southern Wisconsin. Pretty crazy
Hmmm well for the ice cream shop I thought The Scoop could be a cute name I don't have a name for the diner but an idea of a description

Yeah, one of my mom's friends lives in Denver so I've visited a lot. I think Wisconsin works tho.
The Scoop is really cute, I like it a lot.
What was you're idea?

Ahhh. I keep trying to convince my parents to go to Colorado for a vacation but they won't. So I definitely have more experience with Wisconsin
I don't really have much of an idea for the description, but I love the name
So I was thinking like a really homey old school kinda place. Nothing specific enough to put in a nice little description but like a "home cooked meal" kinda place? Or a western themed thing...
Hey Drea!
