Introduction: Music. Dancing. Drawing. Art. All of that was banned after the Event. They say that its safer this way, that it promotes equality and a sense of being. They branded us with codes like tags on sheep and took away our rights to question or explore the world it once was. Some adults supported the idea to spread equality among the remaining population but those who resisted were quickly silenced. A few got away though and word of the resistance started to spread. It started out small, the occasional whisper or a splash of color on grey walls before soon some of the auxiliary bots were reprogrammed or destroyed. Now is our chance. Our chance to regain our individuality! Our music! Our books and our colors back. Are you ready to become the black sheep of the stock? (Intro made by Snowstorm)

Conner Age 15 years old. Dark blue eyes, silver hair. Wears a mask to cover his identity when he's working in the field. All black is his trademark. Is a huge slob at home, but with the base, he's obsessed with cleanliness and hates it when people touch his equipment without asking. (swiftfur)

Alexandrea Age 16 years old. Dark brown eyes, average brown hair. She's rather short and prefers bright colors but sticks to greens and grays due to the system. She wears a black links of London bracelet on her wrist over her barcode. She's a part of the rebellion by gathering important intel such as targets, events, data and just general information. Can easily blend in with a crowd. She is in love with the world's past before the government took over and hopes to restore its previous beauty. Older brother is Darien. (SnowStorm)
Darien Age 24 years old... -Error (5021) Clearance needed to view information. Please provide barcode below to scan. (SnowStorm)

Conner groaned when his alarm clock went off. He got up from his makeshift bed and rubbed his eyes before getting up onto his feet. Rise and shine, Conner. Time to check in. As always, he brushed himself down and marked the date on the calendar that hung against the wall. No windows, no sunlight as usual in this underground cave. But at least the room was brighter than whatever was going on in the city. Conner left his pyjamas on and pulled his bright red robe over his shoulder. On the way to the computer room, he grabbed his earpiece and mic and turned the computer on. "All systems check... Main computer... check... government files... check... personal files," Alex's name popped up on the screen with her barcode number and information. "Check. Communication?" He pressed the call button, hoping that Alexandrea's earpiece was still functioning. "Alex. Can you hear me?"

Alexandrea was eating a bland breakfast with her brother when she heard the small, quiet beep in her ear and then a voice. If she was any other person, she would have jumped at the sudden noise. Due to constantly being on edge, the brunette only closed her eyes for a brief moment. "May I be excused brother? I need to get ready for the day." she asked quietly, waiting for Darien's subtle nod. She pushed in her chair and left the remaining food on the table before heading to her room to respond. "Loud and clear as always Conner. What's the status there?" she asked in a low tone, quickly getting dressed for a dull day above ground. The lack of music and color left her antsy to head back to the base where the government didn't have their claws sunken in.

"I've got an eye in for a random check." He moved another computer and quickly typed in the algorithms to trace the city cameras. "How are things with your brother? Any signs of suspicion?" Even though Conner was rarely on the field, just sitting back and watching always put him on edge. No matter how many times he tells himself that he's seen everything, it's the earth-shattering reality that that always shakes him. What they did was risky and beyond dangerous. "You've got five minutes to get ready for the check-up."

Despite the situation they were in, Alexandrea couldn't help but roll her eyes at Connor's words. "Nothing has changed as far as I can tell. If he was suspicious he wouldn't hesitate to throw me in jail. Besides, he still brings his work home, thank the stars for that!"she complained for a moment as she spent a moment to tidy up her modest bedroom. If Connor's words were right (they were rarely ever wrong) then she had some time to spare before Darien let the auxiliary bots into their home. "Great. Just what we need. A bot in the house. Any other good news?" she asked in a slightly bitter tone, a frown marring her face before she smoothed it back into a neutral look. She wasn't bitter at Conner, goodness no. The boy saved her life many, many times thanks to his technology but she couldn't help but be bitter towards her brother. The fool was a government lackey. A higher up one but a lackey none the less. He was blind in so many ways it was hard to tell that he was her brother at times.

Conner pressed his lips together to hold back his laughter. "Well, it's a Monday. Which means you have school," he snickered. A friendly little jab to lighten up the tense atmosphere. "Do you have a target in mind for today? Anything on the agenda?" He cleared the log files from the cameras and started working on the school firewall. He paused for a moment. "Is... there any chance that you could change your brother's mind? Do your little reverse psychology magic? Or would that be too risky?" Conner bit down on his lower lip. But did he really want to risk his only partner's life? Prison or execution. Either one was bad. "Scrape that idea. I'll be coming up to the surface today... Maybe it'll be a little less risky." he checked the camera again. "They're at the door. Ending transmission. Good luck. See you in school" He hung up and quickly started covering his tracks and erasing their communication transcript from her barcode and anything suspicious and worked on his own barcode as well "Erasing... shutting down..." He closed the window once everything had been completed and threw his head back. "Guess it's time for me to get ready too..."
Daphne was already up and awake and on her shift, jamming the pot of ground coffee into the coffee maker and pressing the brew. She turned around to check on the their "baked goods." if you can even call them "baked goods." Premade, frozen with the same, plain ingredients. Oat cookies. Oat muffins. Not even raisin oatmeal. Just oat. All stocked up. She held back a sigh and waved down the next customer.

Connor's words wreaked havoc in her brain as the sound of her brother calling for her echoed down the hall followed by the sound of a beep. Alexandrea couldn't help but groan quietly, her eyes closed as she took a deep breath to sooth her mask back into place. "Work my magic huh..? I've tried that for years. Maybe I'd break through to him soon enough..but not today." she mumbled to herself as she headed down the hall to meet the bot. It was a grotesque looking thing in her mind, all silver and rounded edges. Technology has gone far since the government took over but that was only for the lackeys. Sure the common folk had similar technology but it was a cheaper model made to look like the real deal. Equality was never the same, its been that way for years. As she presented her wrist to scan, she couldn't help but worry her bracelet in her opposite hand. Thank the stars for Conner and his technology. If he wasn't a wizard (How cool is that word? Off topic brain!) at what he does, I'd have died by now. By my brother's hand or my own insanity. she thought to herself as she slipped out the door, bracelet and bag in tow.
Darien watched his little sister head to school before giving the auxiliary bot his own wrist. A beep and a small hiss later, a compartment opened up and he deposited his previous paperwork before withdrawing a flash drive. It contained all his work for the day and information that his little sister swipes nightly, not that he ever notices. "Thank you. Is that all?" he asked the bot. An affirmative beep later, the government lackey walked out the door and closed it with a click. "Maybe I'll get some coffee today. Yes.. That seems like a good idea. Maybe I'd see Miss Daphne today as well." he mused quietly to himself, setting a course to the coffee shop. He did like oats after all.

Conner took a deep breath and started getting himself ready. He pulled his hoodie over his head and the mask over his face. Black cargos, check. He brought his earpiece with him and the portable radio. He clipped that onto his pants and headed for the door. The hideout was located deep within a cave, guarded by a heavy osmium door just in the woods a little ways out of the city. Right next to the high concrete walls that surrounded it. He had his sources, and no one ever questioned him. After locking up, Conner did a quick perimeter check and glanced at his watch. Random check should be over by now. Conner opened the communication radio and whispered into as he ran through the trees, breath heavy and silently praying that there were no police around to check. "Alex. Do you read? Random Check go alright? I'm out on the surface," Conner panted.
Daphne set up another cup of coffee with the typical bored expression on her face. She served the last round of coffee before shoving another pot into the machine. From her peripheral, she could see the auxiliary bots enter through the door. A couple of them split up and checked on the customers in her store. A typical morning for a random check. Daphne rolled her sleeves up and quickly showed her barcode. A quick check of approval. Clean. Always clean. Comfortable, too.

Alexandrea didn't pause when Connor dialed in and she felt a slight tension drain from her shoulders at his voice before tensing back up. "Reading five by five Connor. The check went well as usual. How's the surface treating you?" she asked in a normal tone of voice. She learned the hard way that people tend to take notice when a tone of voice changes pitch in conversation. She picked up a habit of talking to herself just so that her conversations with Connor could be dismissed as her usual rambles. "At least the random checks aren't so random when you're on the lookout. Excited for school?" she asked with a slight smirk, knowing that school would be dreadfully boring for the both of them.
Darien opened the door to the coffee shop with a small smile of content, eyeing the auxiliary bots with subtle approval. When he first learned of the government transition (AKA Hostile Takeover) he was naught but a young teen then and they had used human enforcers for the random checks. That didn't go over so well at first, a few casualties here and there. Soon, the auxiliary bots came into effect and so many lives went smoother after that. He gave a hum of approval before approaching the counter only to see Miss Daphne there and he smiled slightly. "Good morning Miss Daphne. I trust your day is going well?"

"So far so good, Alex. No bloodhounds or police in sight." Conner reached into his pocket and took out a supplement. Something he came up with to hide his silver hair and blue eyes while he was up on the surface for a long enough time. He pulled his mask down momentarily to take it before pulling it back up. He scoffed breathlessly and grunted, "Yeah, I'm so ready for another day of mindless brainwashing." Everytime he went to the surface for school, it took every fiber of his being not to trash the whole place. "I'm just glad I'm out of the city the majority of the time." Though he was very young, it's been five years since he created and took over this rebellion. The last thing he remembered was the image of his mother and father being taken away for violation of section 2b: anyone who speaks their mind against another person or the government, displays the act of treason. (I don't like how I worded this.) Which led to the public execution that took place in town square. Conner was angry. Humiliated. And that was the day he vowed to take back the voices that were stolen from the government. He cleared his throat when he realized that he had been radio silent. "I'm reaching the main road... how much time do you think I have before the bell rings?"
Daphne nodded, "Yes, sir. Things are going very well." She poured him a cup of coffee and handed it to Darien. "Everything in it's place as always. Muffin or cookie?" She walked to the pastry display. There wasn't much to say about Darien. An interesting fellow, very... robotic would you say? Everyone here was robotic. Everyone was the same. Equal talent, equal talent, equal ranks. No one person was better than the other at anything.

Alex couldn't help but snort in agreement on his words as she continued to the only high school in the area. The rest of the schools were shut down early on in the government transition to promote unity and equality. More like they promote brainwashing. It was way too easy for them to capitalize on what should be taught. The school doesn't teach music or art anymore! she ranted to herself before hearing Connor's next question. "You have about five minutes till bell rings, wizard. Do your magic and get here on time for once, will ya?" she teased lightly, glancing at her watch before stepping into the large school. She hoped that Connor would get here on time, she doesn't want another 'tardy' on his profile. Who knows what the teachers would do this time. Maybe I would have to resort to another diversion..
Darien smiled as the aroma of coffee drifted up to tease his senses and relaxed slightly. "I think I would have a muffin today. I might be spoiling myself if I take another cookie. Thank you Miss Daphne." he said, taking a sip of his bland but strong coffee. "Mmm, very good as always. Say, haven't you thought of working for the office? We could always use more workers. "

Conner rolled his eyes at the nickname. As if he didn't hear it enough times already. "I don't have a magic broom or carpet..." he reached behind him into the small compartment he sewed into the back padding of his backpack. "Buuut I do have a board. I'll be there on time. Promise." He threw the flat onto the road and it unfolded in front of him, the jets of the hoverboard formed and Conner immediatly hopped on and drove towards the city in high speed. "Terminating communication. I'll see you in five, Alex. Don't forget bag checks. Put the ear piece into the little secret compartment that I sewed in the bottom of your bag. They shouldn't be able to be detected in the x-rays." He pushed the button on his ear piece and slipped it into his compartment. That back padding compartment really came in handy. Especially for rioting purposes if they were carry anything heavier than a board. He reached the city and hid in an alley to hop of and slide the board back into his backpack. "Two minutes...." he muttered to himself and started running for the school.
Daphne raised an eyebrow. She never thought of working in the office before. Or anything other than the cafe. "What kind or do you see me potentially doing?" She asked, popping an oat muffin into a paper bag and handing it to Darien. Daphne frowned and cast her eyes onto the counter. "You can't be serious. All I do is brew coffee and make muffins all day. I don't think I'd be any good(keyword) at it anyways. I think I'll pass," she reached the back of his neck, scratching it nervously. There was no way he could be serious. Her? The cafe girl? Doing an office job? No way.

Alex snickered at Connor's words and could just see the eye roll the silver haired teen would give her. She didn't get a chance to respond before he cut communication and sighed, deftly removing the communication piece while making it look like she was just tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. "Honestly. I was kind of hoping to cause more mayhem today." she muttered to herself, pouting lightly. She had just the right items too. Slipping the piece into her bag's pocket she fingered the firecrackers lightly before zipping it shut. "Time to get this over with I suppose.." she said to her self, stepping up to hand her bag to security. She was never worried about exposure, Conner always did a good job on making the equipment. Her heart stopped in her chest for a second though when she heard one of them exclaim before a tussle broke out. "Tch! Stupid idiots!" she hissed, snatching her now searched bag to head to homeroom. "What are they thinking? Brawling over candy? Though I do have to wonder where he found that particular brand.."
Darien tisked gently at her words and gave her a smile before replying. "Miss Daphne. What ever do you mean? We are all equal now, are we not? No one is better than the other and we all do a good job at whatever we may decide to do. I dare say you are just as qualified to work at the office as I am. I do hope you reconsider." He took another sip of his coffee before reaching into his wallet to pay for his things. "Here's my card, my number and office number is on there. Give me a call when you'd like to transfer jobs and I'll make it happen. Good day Miss Daphne!"

The tablet he swallowed earlier had set in and now his hair was completely covered with brown to the root. He sighed, already missing his silver hair as he entered the school gates and ran through the doors. Homeroom 205. There. He made a sprint for it just in time when the bell rang. Everyone was already in their chairs when Conner took his seat to the back row and plopped down, exhausted. The teacher eyed at him suspiciously as he tried his best to keep his breathing even and steady.
"Oh... okay." She looked down at the card that was put in her hands before she could say anything. Another job, hmm? It could be interesting. She always was curious as to how this whole system worked. How everything was so... organized. It was, in a way, comforting knowing that someone was out there, watching over the city.

Alex couldn't help but snicker into her hand as half the class swiveled into their seats to eye Connor and she couldn't help but smirk at him in amusement. All his work to change his hair color and he still stands out in class. She knew that it was a pill but she couldn't wrap her mind around how that was even possible. Shaking her head slightly to clear her thoughts, the brunette faced the front of the class to pay attention. She was already bored for the day. "Attention class. We have a speaker coming in today directly from the government. He's here for the career subjects that you've been focusing on for the upcoming career fair that we've been working to obtain." the teacher spoke but Alexandrea drowned out her words. A career representative from the government eh? It looks like she found her next target. She might choose a few more in the other fields just to throw off her trail but how to make them connected? She sat back with a small hum, already plotting their demise. In another life, Alexandrea may have been horrified at her line of thought but in this one, she was all too use to it. How else were they going to continue their revolution?
Darien headed to his office with coffee and muffin in tow, checking his watch occasionally. He was on time but who knew when his boss would be of need of him? Working as the secretary for the BIS made his job incredibly important but he was careful to remember that each person was equal now. He could be replaced at any moment and that thought motivated him to take on all the most important paperwork in vain hope that he would be indispensable to the team. Over the years, he had helped retain the government's policy and reinforced those rules himself. He knew that there was a rebellion brewing once more out there and that thought alone angered him. "I swear, when I find those rebels I would put a stop to all that nonsense once and for all." he muttered to himself, taking a seat at his desk with a dark glower.

Conner took a deep breath and settled down in his seat, trying his best to act as normal as he could. Though sitting almost completely still with his back straight in this boring, uncomfortable uniform was extremely hard. He had barely just started school and Conner was already missing his all-black attire. Not to mention, the June heat was already radiating and close to unbearable. It had been a couple of weeks since he last roamed the surface. Hopefully, he wasn't too out of practice to be suspicious. He tried to hold back his expression and not perk up at the mention of a government official. Maybe they could catch their attention somehow. Maybe another target. Conner preferred a less violent option unless direct violence was completely necessary.
Daphne tucked the card into her pocket. Maybe she could reconsider getting another job. Escape this boring hole of a cafe where all they served was instant coffee and stale oat muffins. Or maybe it was the change of pace. Daphne couldn't exactly pinpoint what it was. But something felt like it was missing. She shook the thought away. There was nothing that needed to be changed, was there? Everything and everyone had their place here. It was peaceful. Other than the leaked rumour of a rebellion taking place in their own city. The thought made the hair on the back of her neck prickle. Why would anyone want to change? Daphne shook her head. Those were just rumours. No one has evidence that there really was a rebellion group.

The morning passed quickly for Alexandrea and before she knew it, it was already lunch time. Slinging her book bag over her shoulder, the tiny brunette weaved through the crowd towards the rooftop. It was off limits per usual but when did she ever obey the rules? To her, the rules were just guidelines that were optional. She needed more in her life than the dull colors and monotone life style. She needed music, art, excitement and change for her to truly be happy. That was how Connor got her to join the rebellion after all. "Maybe we should try something different today. Something that would cause a stir.." she mumbled to herself, deftly picking the door lock to the rooftop access before slipping up the stairs.

Relieved by the ring of the lunch bell, Conner slouched his shoulders and got up, stretching himself out. Before he got a chance to leave the classroom, the teacher walked towards him with a strained-looking smile on her face. Her lips looked so far pulled back when she smiled. As if the corner of her lips had been tied back with strings. "How are you doing Conner?" She asked, clutching her books. Conner wasn't sure if she was genuinely worried, or if she just wanted to get him alone so she could whack him over the head. Even if she wanted to, there were cameras everywhere inside the school. Teachers who mistreated students get... 'special treatment' of their own. In some ways, the system worked beautifully. And he took advantage of it. "I'm doing a-alright." He said in the lowest voice possible. In his papers, he was documented as "mentally ill, Post Traumatic Stress after parents' attempt to brainwash." Ironic. It meant that he could show up to school whenever he felt like it, getting the same education and the same fair treatment as anyone else. Technically, he wasn't lying. The only thing that he would be lying about, was the reason. "I-I've been c-catching up with homework... and stuff..." "Don't worry your pretty little head about it too much, Conner. I'll see to it that you're all caught up with homework." The teacher sending him homework everyday was probably the reason why her smile was so wide. Conner lifted his chin and mustered up a smile of his own. "Yes, miss. I'll do my best." And then she left. When the classroom door closed behind her, Conner let out a huge sigh of relief. Now. To sneak around and find Alex. He stepped out of the hall and walked around the school as casually as he could until he found the security camera's blind spot

Alex settled against a rail with a sigh, pulling out a tablet from the hidden compartment of her bag along with her ear piece. Equipping her gear, the rebel turned on the device to scroll through yesterday's reports that her brother was given. "So.. The new guy is Lt. Sabbath from the early days of the takeover eh? So called war veteran due to an honorable discharge. What did he get discharged for now.. Family matters and a gun wound that healed badly to the leg. The family matters seem interesting.. Oh? What's this? Well well well. Things just got interesting." she mumbled to herself, clicking on multiple files that she copied from her brother. "I'm glad that brother dearest is so high up. I get all this juicy info." All there was to do now was talk it over with the wizard himself, she didn't want to interrupt any plans that he himself had made.

Conner slid against the walls, taking the route that was less crowded so he could discreetly make his way to his and Alex's meeting spot on the roof. He slipped his fingers up into a component that held his lock picks and unlocked the door to the roof. "Ahhh, there you are." He let his face and shoulders relax into a smile as he walked up to his comrade. "Long time no see, friend." He sat down in front of her and tilted his head. "You found something?"

Alexandrea glanced up with a blank look before realizing who he was and a grin crossed her face. "You bet I did! So our special speaker for the Career Fair? His name is Lt. Sabbath. He was apart of the government takeover in the early days. He had an honorable discharge a few years after it was started. Gun wound to the leg that didn't heal. I thought that it sounded too plain so I did some digging. Turns out that our lieutenant's family were like us. He was the one who found them and the government didn't want him on their team anymore so he was discharged because of his family. I was just about to look them up to see what happened." she explained, turning around her tablet to show the teen her findings. She looked like the cat who found the cream with that mischievous grin on her face.

Conner shuffled around until he was sitting next to his partner and stared at the screen. "Ohhh... Let's see what kind of trouble we're cooking up here. On an unrelated note, I have a few supplies for tonight's anonymous protest. Maybe I can get a rise out of your brother," he rubbed his palms together. He still remembered the last time he pulled a stunt on the surface. It was beautiful. The mural on the school wall was a nice touch and it got that government lanky all red in the face. The most emotion he could get out of that man. Priceless. "Maybe I can do something... bigger..." It was a little risque since he'd already almost got caught once and didn't enter the surface again for weeks because of it. But if Conner was going down, he was going down with a bang.

Alexandrea snickered at Connor's words and she couldn't help but remember the last time she saw her brother all worked up. That was a good day, a risky but a good day for them. "Did you want any help on that? My dear brother needs to show more emotion and it's about time for another stunt. I do believe his head is swelling to a large degree." She mused, scrolling through the information her brother unknowingly provided for her. "Huh.. The government is ruthless. Mass execution in the home. Seems like the only reason it wasn't public is because he was a supporter.."

Conner shuddered at the article. "Imagine just... one day disappearing and no one knowing about it until weeks later." He didn't know what was worse, public execution or that. Conner took a deep breath to calm his nerves. People got arrested and or killed for simply expressing and displaying the extent of what humans can do. No one was better than anyone. Every just had different strengths. He clenched his fists until they shook. "I'm thinking of doing something to the school." He drawled out lowly. Public property was one thing; paint spraying walls, destroying mail boxes, even hanging out colourful clothes on telephone wire was already risky enough. But the school was government-owned. It had the tightest security and the highest firewalls. It would take maybe days or weeks to break through, but it was doable. His eyes stared at the article displayed on the webpage and it set something in him on fire. He'd do it for himself and for anyone that risked their lives in this dump of a city. Even if it meant getting himself killed.

Alexandrea blinked at his words and turned her attention to her silver haired friend in disguise. "To the school? Are you sure about that?" She asked the teen, trying not to frown at his words. That was risky, really really risky. She knew that her brother kept a close tab on the school due to the fact that she was still of age and she was a tad concerned. Once she said that his determination for the school suddenly clicked with her. "You're doing this because of the speaker?" she asked after a moment, closing out of her tabs. She had gotten what she wanted from the files in the end.

Conner blinked rapidly when the tabs had closed. He adjusted his eyes to the natural light and nodded, the fire burning from his chest. There was no going back on his word. It could either go really well, or horribly wrong. Conner had basically bet his life down the momeny the leadership of the resistance was passed down to him. But this was beyond just betting his life. It was downright reckless. And he was all for it. Conner licked his lips and grinned. "We can arrange some preparations tonight. I'll tell you the details when I get home. In the meantime, we should also look for some recruits while the both of us are here." He got up and checked his watch. "Looks like lunch break is almost over. What do you have next?"

"Algebra." Alex groaned out, her head tilting backwards to hit the wall behind her. "Why couldn't that have died out with the take over? I swear its useless in this day and age." she complained, automatically moving to put away her tablet safely in the hidden compartment of her bag. "You better let me know before you do anything stupid Connor. That's my job." she said, rising to her feet to dust off her school skirt. "Why do we have uniforms again? They're so drab." she muttered as she moved to the door, dreading her next period. Math was her second worst subject, history being the first. She couldn't stand what they were trying to pass off as the past now. "Who do you have in mind as far as recruits Connor?"

"I've got Biology." He replied and got up from his seat, brushing his pants off. "Well, I can't make any promises, Alex." He smirked, "but you don't have to worry about me, babe. I've got technology on my side." He chuckled and took his backpack up the minute the five-minute warning bell rang. He opened the roof door and led Alex down the stairs. "I have someone in mind," he cleared his throat and glanced the other way, "but I haven't confirmed yet. I'll confirm with you when I've got a better look. Same goes for you." The tip of his ears and his neck turned a little pink. He turned on his heels and started walking down the hall like they didn't just have a meeting up on the roof of the school. He switched his tone a little, remaining as monotonous as he could. "I'll see you after class, Alexandrea."
(I'm tempted to have his plan almost fail.)

It would speed things up lol add tension and the like. On the other hand, Darien would have a conniption which would be hilarious )
Alexandrea watched Connor walk away with a blank look on her face, standing in the hallway near her classroom. "Did.. Did he just call me babe? What in the-" she muttered to her self, well aware that the halls echoed. She was glad that Connor already walked away and she felt her cheeks heat up slightly. "Alexandrea! Hurry up!" a student called, startling the teen into action. She raced into the classroom as the last bell rang and sat down with a huff, a scowl on her face. "Dummy better not do anything stupid.." she muttered, digging in her bag as class started for her notebook. She paused for a moment as she brushed a lock of hair behind her ear and scowled again. "Acting like a school girl over a word. How stupid.." she muttered, ignoring the fact that she was technically still a school girl in her teens. Words were words, regardless of who said them and she was not as immune to them as she wanted to believe.
