yo so i heard about the Ohio State Fair accident and so i looked up the video and legitimately cringed. okay, so i am a ride operator at an amusement park and as the operator i am always listening for weird noises. some rides i am not even allowed to open without specific safety checks (for example, the drop tower i have to run 3 cycles and ensure that the ride does not start with lap bars and seat belts unlocked or unbuckled).
so it's truly scary. the ride that broke in Ohio isn't like any rides we have, but we do have a ride that does the same thing but instead of a bar holding it up, it runs on a track (i had a nightmare once all the lap bars fell and people fell off and then the tire melted and the ride fell off the track...) and people were scared to ride it all day i hear.
anyways. amusement park rides are a hundred times more sturdy but like, as the operator please know that i worry about my rides 60% of the time (some rides i have more confidence then others) and i will emergency stop it at a moments notice if need or call maintenance at the slightest weird noise. also some rides have an contigency like if a malfunction happens, the ride shuts down and it's inconvent if it's like the drop tower at 90 feet up but hey, you'll be okay at least.
that is all.

I saw the same video, I think. The first time I tried looking I had to cover my eyes because it was just so horrible. Not going to lie, I was at a county fair last night and was riding MANY rides with a theme similar to the Fireball, and it just kind of shakes you up, ya know? Like, no offense to you at all, but people that get on these rides (including me) put an immense amount of faith into the people that run them, which sometimes amazes me that I do because you don't know who set it up or how they did their job, what they might have done wrong. It's not something you can predict you just have blind faith in. You have to wonder how something, such a freak accident happens, and if it could happen again. Like, the rides I'm on always make noises, at least when they're starting up/shutting down and I try to shrug it off mainly, because they do that every time and it still works. But it doesn't take away from the fear factor now, and even though I still want to ride the Cobra and the Round Up at my county fair this year, I'm still scared to just do it. Idk what to think. What happened was horrifying.

Where did you see this? Not to be a nosybody at the expense of others' suffering, but... the only news site I saw it posted on just showed a video of the ride a few seconds before it actually happened.

I never go on amusement park rides out of being a coward (and they trigger my headaches) but my desire to go on them has decreased dramatically

It's not the ride operator's fault for what happened. That's why the ride was being banned across the board. But, It's shocking when you see what happened and the videos people took to recording moments after the viral video ended. I watched eyewitness accounts and it's sickening. It could have been any of them. And i think that's whats the most scariest thing about this tragedy. One small difference and it could have been you, your friend.. Mother, ect.
I will still go on rides and check out amusement parks. But probably never any that aren't already grounded. An example of that would be Disneyland.

just google ohio state fair video and hit the video tab on google, it pulls it right up.
That was a ride I would never go on anyway, it looks scary enough to me I wouldnt ride it. I cant even imagine being their and watchcing it fall apart in the air like that.

Made me think of the Schlitterbahn incident with the 10 year old kid who got decapitated by the huge water slide or whatever... eek.

from what ive seen, people are seeming to believe that the metal was under a lot of stress and broke... whats even more startling about the ride breaking is that it passed the three safety checks... i believe four rides failed the inspection
on another hand, i didnt realize you were a ride operator!!! thats hella awesome omg

This made the news in Australia, so yeah, I've seen it, and didn't have any warning beforehand. It was just 'hey heres the footage laying while we talk about it'. Something like this is literally my worst nightmare, and I actually struggle to ride some portable rides because of it. The last time I went to a fair, which was earlier this year, there was an identical ride to that one that broke, and my friend tried to get me to ride it with her, but I managed to talk her out of it (I'm a little scared of heights) and now its all I can think about.
I am extremely thankful that the ride didn't break when it was higher up. While what happened was terrible, it looked like they were fairly close to the ground.
Thank you, Australian news program, for feeding my irrational fear of amusement park rides.
