I just read this yesterday~~~
also I was prepared for some hardcore Silmarillion stuff sigh LET'S SEE WHAT I CAN REMEMBER
laurië-- that's gold, I'm fairly sure this has something to do with "golden leaves" but I may be mixing that up with Galadriel's farewell to Lorien song
"Vardo" is the line one of the lines relating to Varda
"Sí man i yulma nin enquantuva?" -- who now shall refill the cup for me?
The next line mentions Varda, star-kindler, on the Holy Mountain "Oiolossëo"
Elentári is another name for Varda, star-kindler, a lot of this poem relates to her
The Calacirya (Calaciryo) is the pass through the Pelori mountains (excuse the lack of accents I can't remember them)
"Now lost, lost to those in the East is Valimar!
Farewell! Maybe you shall find Valimar. Maybe even you shall find it. Farewell!"
... going to check to see how much of that I got right AHH sorry I am in an Elvish Mood

This is one of the poems I am at a moderate level of familiarity with. I know all of Finrod's battle with Sauron-- because I'm a horrible elvish trash nerd -- and I know a few verses of "Eärendil" by heart. I also think I know all of Galadriel's farewell song but I haven't tested that.

Okay I messed up a little bit: "now lost, lost to those from the East is Valimar" instead of "in the East," I called the Mountain the Holy Mountain when it's Mount Everwhite in the translation, and instead of "you shall" it is "thou shalt" in the last few lines.
But I mean. I think I win? I am taking this far too seriously I am sorry I can never stop with Tolkien but I hope you started this thread in the hopes of meeting a nerd so

U win XD U get.... My respect! (Ok this might not seem like anything to you but it's the most I can do right now ;v;)
Yes I was attempting to attract nerds XD
This was the full translation Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind, long years numberless as the wings of trees! The years have passed like swift draughts of the sweet mead in lofty halls beyond the West, beneath the blue vaults of Varda wherein the stars tremble in the song of her voice, holy and queenly.
Who now shall refill the cup for me?
For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the Stars, from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds, and all paths are drowned deep in shadow; and out of a grey country darkness lies on the foaming waves between us, and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever. Now lost, lost to those from the East is Valimar!
Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar. Maybe even thou shalt find it. Farewell!
Anyways you did a good job xD

Haha thank you!! I love Tolkien a lot. I am (slowly, because school) rereading the Lord of the Rings now and am almost done Fellowship. Now that I've read the Silmarillion I have a much higher understanding of all of the hidden lore (Eärendil! The Phial of Galadriel! Beren and Lúthien! Celebrimbor! Every mention of Fëanor, what a disaster he was) and it makes it a lot more fun. I can also relate to Sam a little too much ("we're going to see the elves! *bursts into tears* " ... same)
aah oh no I want to keep reading but I have to leave for exam prep and I need to dedicate at least an hour of my time to reading those chapters.
edit: and how could I forget Galadriel, queen of my heart, you look at her so differently when you figure out she actively participated in Elves Rebel From Paradise And End Up Causing The Sinking Of An Entire Continent (and I am wholeheartedly rejecting the versions where she just ~happened~ to be part of the rebellion accidentally because... wow this "desiring lands and kingdoms for her own" REALLY makes her refusal of the Ring much more interesting)

Fëanor tho
And I whole heartedly agree =v= Sometimes it seems LOR is just the tip of the iceberg and Silmarilliom is the 2/3rds under the surface. Completely marvelous and rich in the history of middle earth ;v;

Fëanor is such a disaster, I love him so much.
I definitely agree! It makes the entire experience of Lord of the Rings much more enjoyable once you know the backstory behind it. (And that conversation between Elrond and Gimli? "yet let him not vow to walk in the dark, he who has not seen the nightfall" "yet sworn word may strengthen quaking heart" "or break it" oww) I personally find the Silmarillion a lot more interesting, probably because I love tragic disaster characters who tried but made all the wrong choices? Hence my love for the Fëanorions. I wish Tolkien had the opportunity to explore it further. I would have loved even more details on all of them, especially with the huge gaps of decades where nothing notable happens besides a bunch of men being born during the Long Peace.
