Meh, not sure. I personally don't know much on the subject so I'm unsure of what to put, not wanting to judge before I know all the facts first.

I'd say it just depends. It's not outright cruel, since humans race, but there should be strict regulations on training them.

Do they do anything bad to the horses? Are they abused like in greyhound racing?

Yaaaass my favorite subject xD
I'm fine with the actual racing as long as they are not drugged or abused. As stated many times above, I do believe there should be stricter regulations and more drug tests at the races.
Mainly, the only thing that bothers me about the horse racing industry is what happens to the horses that didn't win as much after their racing careers are over. Although many are trying to rescue off track horses and train them for different uses, some are still being sent to slaughter and abandoned. For example, my friend recently rescued an OTTB (Off-Track Thoroughbred) who had been abused, neglected, and abandoned. So just the way some owners treat their horses as disposable items, that's what really gets me angry. However, in general, most trainers and owners love and cherish their horses and many are given good lives. Just like everything, there will always be a few bad apples in the bunch.

As in anything in the world, there are always bad people that will abuse, maim, injure, and cruelly use horses. Banning racing as a sport does one thing and one thing only- destroy a city and state that was built upon the industry (Louisville and Kentucky, respectively, who would not be here and would likely suffer a great deal were racing to be outright banned. I live here, and we're already suffering from the simply decline in racing) as well as push people to abuse, misuse, and be cruel in OTHER aspects of life.
People can be downright awful. There are good people, and bad people. Bad people will always take advantage of the system- including horse racing- and do miserable, pathetic things because they are selfish and sick. For example, drugging horses for one, and to another extreme, ABUSING horses. But people do this in everyday life, and banning racing will only hurt a city, state, industry, and many people and then horses that will have no value- being sent to slaughter as there is no where else to put them- but completely destroy a wonderful breed (the Thoroughbred) that will nearly cease to exist, along with hurt other breeds that participate in racing (Quarter Horses, Arabians, etc.)
Long story short: Racing is not the problem. Bad, evil people are. And they will continue to exist regardless.

There are always people who abuse Anything. Horse racing should not be banned as the sport has been around way longer tan football. The triple crown has literally been around for 145 (or sixth) years. longer than football's superbowl. Horse racing has gotten America through tough times as Seabiscuit helped Americans in the Great depression

Hey, so I did something like this for my project and do you want to use some of my stuff? It's all anonymous, but it has countries, ages and scaled options? (It's about 85 answers, though it did bring about an overall negative view of horse racing.)

I think horse racing is fine, just like any other equestrian sport. I've been involved with horses my entire life, and haven't heard much of an argument against it, so I guess I'm a little biased? If a rider is abusing a horse then the rider should, of course, be banned from competitions and have their horse taken from them. There should be a lot more rules in place to protect the horses.
