Another sunrise.
Another day in hell.
The shrill beeping of the alarm to Thane’s left was intensely annoying, and for the briefest of moments he seriously considering lifting his hand, curling it into a fist, and smashing the damned clock into a million little pieces. The urge passed quickly, though; his father would be infuriated if Thane did not show up to Orientation. As the son of the headmaster, Thane was considered to be a sort of role model for Caligo University – a position that he greatly despised. The alarm’s beeping grew even louder, and Thane groaned, tossing an arm over his eyes. He did his best to ignore the irritating sound, but after a few futile moments, he reached over and smacked the top of the little metal torture box, silencing it for the day. He laid there for a moment, staring at the ceiling, studying the dull, lifeless white paint. He snorted. The paint was a sort of metaphor, he guessed, as his jade eyes scanned the uniform surface. A glittering outside, hiding a bitter, rough and dangerous inside. That’s what Caligo was, after all; an outward appearance carefully constructed to mask its reality. The humans that came to this school were thrown to the wolves, and left to fend for themselves against the monsters that lurked in the dark. Every single human that entered those gates had the same fate: slavery, shackled to a vampire, serving as their source of food and entertainment. He turned his head to the left, and saw the bare, empty bed. A benefit of being the headmaster’s son, he supposed; he had no roommate. Thane curled his lip back in a biting sneer. His father expected him to act as a proper vampire should, and disregard human life. The only look a human was good for, his father had said, was blood and reproduction.
As a rule, vampires had difficulty reproducing amongst themselves. There was a much higher chance of a human becoming impregnated with a vampire’s child than a vampire becoming pregnant. Something to do with genes, or some subject that Thane didn’t really care to study, as he had no interest in carrying on his father’s line. A sickening feeling curdled in his stomach; Thane recognized it well. Hatred, despair, disgust. Thane completely and utterly despised Caligo Univeristy, his father, and everything they stood for. There were other, nonviolent ways of obtaining blood, and Thane had no interesting in twisting the mind of whatever human was assigned to him, and turn her into nothing more than a mindless servant intent on pleasing Thane at every possible opportunity.
Thane shifted, rolling off the uncomfortable lump that served as a mattress in the dorms. His bare feet touched the floor, and he scrubbed at his face for a moment before he stood and lumbered over to the sink. He flipped the light on, even though his superior vampire eyesight meant that he could see everything within the room perfectly, and lifted his gaze, staring into the mirror. His jade eyes reflected the light of the vanity lamp, casting an eerie, white sheen across his gaze. He opened his mouth, watching with abject fascination as his canine teeth elongated, sliding downward into a pair of glistening, pearly white fangs. He truly was a monster, he mused. He retracted his fangs, eyeing the slightly pointed, but otherwise normal looking, canines that were left behind. With a mournful sigh, he lumbered into the bathroom and kicked on the shower, stepping into the stream. The cold water slammed into him and he stiffened instinctively, but otherwise ignored the shock.
Ten minutes later, Thane was cleaned and dressed. He picked up his phone and wallet, sliding both into his pocket. As he moved towards the door and reached for a handle, there was a loud, sharp knock. Thane frowned, and swung the door open. The form of Kane Preston stood in front of him, and he had to resist the urge to sneer at the other vampire. Kane Preston aspired to be everything Thane despised, and for that reason Thane couldn’t stand him. Kane gave Thane a withering smile that spoke volumes about his opinion of Thane.
“Your father wishes to see you before the ceremony,” Kane trilled in a sickly-sweet voice. He paused, and offered Thane a fang-filled grin. “Fresh blood today. I am curious to see who will by my Chosen. I can’t wait to get a taste. What about you, Thane?”
Thane waved him off. “Yes, of course. I’m itching to get my teeth into some pretty young woman.” A lie, of course; he had to keep up appearances. Kane grinned and stepped aside, leaving Thane after an instant. Thane locked his dorm room door and headed towards the headmaster’s mansion, where his father lived.
It was a short walk, but one that Thane tried to drag out as much as possible. He entered his father’s home without much preamble, and then made his way towards the main office. He knocked once and then swung open the door.
The sight that greeting Thane had his stomach turning. His father, Pierre Kingston, had some human woman sitting on his lap. Pierre’s teeth were buried in her throat, left hand cupping the back of the woman’s head, right hand clamped over her mouth. She was squirming, moaning in pleasure. All of her reservations had been destroyed by his father’s teeth, and it was disturbing to watch the human struggle to shift into a more pleasurable position. Pierre’s jade eyes lifted, settling on his son. The two stared at each other for a long moment, as Pierre continued to drain the woman. Her moans and pants became more shallow, movements growing weaker and more sluggish. Thane could hear the woman’s heartbeat slowing, and he clenched his jaw to keep himself from yelling at his father to stop.
Thump-thump. The human’s heartbeat stuttered, and Pierre finally withdrew his fangs and lifted his head, licking the woman’s blood off his teeth. He made no motion to close the woman’s wounds, and Thane watched with horrified fascination as the woman continued to bleed. Her brown eyes grew foggy, and with one last, stuttering beat, her heart gave out. Pierre stood, dropping the human’s lifeless form to the floor in a manner that one would discard off a flea or a fly, and turned to his son.
“Good of you to finally make an appearance.” Pierre Kingston spoke in a lofty voice that made his opinion of his son very clear. Neither were fond of each other, but both seemed to recognize that they were stuck in their current predicament. Pierre snapped his fingers, and another pair of humans stepped into the room. “Discard of this mess,” he ordered as he walked around the human’s discarded corpse and towards his son. Thane resisted the urge to tense as his father grabbed his arm in a vice-like grip and led him in the direction of the front door. “I have personally selected your Chosen from this group of humans,” he said suddenly.
Thane blinked in shock. “Thank you, Father,” he responded, keeping his shock and anger out of his voice. Pierre gave him a strange look but did not comment.
“I expect you to handle her accordingly,” Pierre continued. “It’s about time that you got to producing heirs, and the female I chose for you would make a fine consort.” Thane opened his mouth to speak, but his father cut him off. “You will do as I say, Thane. I’ve tolerated your insubordination for a time. I’ve waited for you to mature and to realize your position in our world, but I’ve been disappointed, to say the least. If you do not produce an heir by the end of the semester, Thane, I will consider it an act of rebellion. My retribution will not be pleasant. Consider my words, son.” Pierre released Thane’s arm and left his son. “The Orientation is in twenty minutes, Thane. Hurry up.”
Mute, Thane followed after his father. He’d expected some sort of scolding, considering that his last Chosen had discovered the nature of the school and had to be axed off for the safety of their kind, but he hadn’t expected that. He closed his eyes for a moment, sending up a silent apology to whoever he’d been paired with. For the good of the rebellion, for the good of his people, Thane would have to embrace the part of his nature that he really, really hated.
Twenty minutes later, Thane found himself staring as his father strode onto the stage. The auditorium was vast, despite the small amount of people within its confines, and the velvety red curtains added an air of elite authority that grated on Thane’s nerves. He pinched the bridge of his nose, dreading what would come next.
Pierre stopped in front of the microphone, casting his emerald gaze across the group of people assembled. Caligo University was tiny, compared to other schools, admitting less than five hundred people a semester. That was fine with him, though; the humans were easier to control in small numbers. He cleared his throat, and spoke:
“I am Pierre Kingston, and it is my great honor to welcome you wonderful students to Caligo University. Each year, we take careful consideration, pouring through the thousands of potential students to select the very best. You are that group; the best of the best. You show the greatest potential, and I am confident that throughout your journey here, at Caligo University, you will discover what it means to be part of our small, unique family. I am confident you will discover the path you are destined to take, and will unlock your full potential as humans.” He paused, waiting for the audience’s clapping to die down. “As Headmaster, I will be here to guide your journey, but I am only one man. I do not have hundreds of arms, unfortunately.” He offered a smile that seemed genuine. “To make sure your transition is painless and flawless, we utilize a practice here at Caligo University. You will be paired with another student or faculty member who will be there to answer questions, assist in your schoolwork, and guide your path here at Caligo. Be proud of what you have accomplished, but remember that your fullest potential has yet to be unlocked. Et fortitudo aeternitatis.”
He unfolded the list before him, settling it on the podium. “Sterling Grace,” he announced, speaking clearly. “Your mentor will be Thane Kingston.” At the sound of his name, Thane stepped onto the stage, revealing himself to the crowd. “Please take this time to become acquainted with your mentor.” Thane cocked his head, scanning the crowd for the female as she stood up at the sound of her name. Thane exited the stage, weaving through the crowd to meet up with her. He extended a hand in greeting.
“Name’s Thane,” he said. Reflexively, he extended his mind outward, quietly slid through Sterling’s mental barriers, and found himself embedded in her psyche. Almost distractedly, he shuffled things around, masking Sterling’s survival instincts that were currently screaming at her about the danger he was. He masked her discomfort, her worry at meeting him, and planted to suggestion that she wanted to get to know him very well. Thane mentally winced and withdrew, soundlessly apologizing to Sterling at the atrocity he had just committed. His father’s voice cut through the din, and he glanced up at the stage as Pierre continued rattling off names.
“Clementine Price, your mentor will be Kane Preston. Jaxxon Carter, your mentor will be Viau de Sauveterre.” As he spoke, the vampires on stage moved to mingle with their Chosens. “Imani Reigns, your mentor will be Samuel Gray. Cassie Reynolds, your mentor will be Kaimeron Eddel. Hugo Morris, your mentor will be Blair Dubois. Alfie Almer, your mentor will be Rebecca Gray. Elijah Rhett, your mentor will be Evangelina Surry. Sidney Springer, your mentor will be Artistide Penbrant.” Pierre paused. “If you have not been assigned a mentor, rest assured that it will be remedied soon. Again, we welcome you to Caligo University, and look forward to seeing your potential as humans blossom here. Et fortitudo aeternitatis. Strength and eternity, my friends. We are all family here.”
Thane resisted the urge to scoff. Caligo University was, never had been, and never would be a family. It was a death trap, and the humans had no damned idea.
They were all doomed.
