look, he did attack a whole pack of dogs witch was stupid, but on the other hand he was risking his life to protect his clan from the dog pack. defending his clan like any other brave true clan cat who really cares. you may say he also wanted to be a warrior, and yes he did! but every apprentice does he wanted to prove he was a trust worthy cat, witch he was!

Foolish, honestly. He did it because of rage towards Bluestar's denyial to give him his warrior name, not for being 'brave'. He risked Brightpaw's life and in the end it was an unnecessary death and mutilation. In my opinion, that was a kit behavior, not a warrior's.

He was very foolish, even if his intentions were brave. However he was a young cat, so foolishness comes with being young. I understand why he did what he did, but it doesn't change that both he and Brightpaw made a very foolish and fatal mistake.

I think he was foolish. Swiftpaw sneaked out of camp to find who or what was stealing prey because he wanted to impress Bluestar in order to earn his warrior name, even though by that point Bluestar made it clear she wasn't going to make any cat a warrior unless they gave up on believing in StarClan like she and Cloudtail did.
And Swiftpaw didn't even know about the dogs until he and Brightpaw encountered them. Brightpaw even tried to stop Swiftpaw from going any further, but he didn't listen. In the end, Swiftpaw died and Brightpaw was scarred for life.
Was Swiftpaw brave for fighting the dogs even though they were clearly going to lose? I guess. But it was still foolish and even dangerous of him to sneak out at all.

I think it was foolish, because if a leader isn't giving warrior names, all the apprentices would have to do is wait until the leader dies, and then receive their names.
I'm not sure if renouncing Starclan was the criteria for receiving a warrior name at the time of Swiftpaw's decision, but if it was, he could've also gotten his warrior name by renouncing his faith, but secretly telling everyone that he was still believing in Starclan, then doing so publicly once Bluestar had passed away.
Swiftpaw and Brightpaw could also have led a group of cats who could convince Bluestar to step down, give up her last life and name, have Firestar be the leader, and have things proceed as normal. It shown that leaders are able to retire, and Bluestar would have been the perfect example of someone who could have retired due to no longer being fit to lead...
Not to mention that Brightpaw explains that in Secrets of the Clans that they knew their mentors would be angry with them for leaving camp without permission as apprentices. So if both she and Swiftpaw would have survive their encounter, they would've been punished for breaking the rules, not rewarded. It defeats the entire purpose of going out there in the first place.
Honestly, the whole thing is a case of characters having other options, but choosing to pursue something stupid instead with little or no reasoning behind that decision... Unfortunately, that seems to be a problem in the books...

Both, but more on the foolish side.
He was brave, but was he really doing it for the Clan rather than his personal benefit? He dragged a fellow apprentice into his problems. He got himself killed and Brightpaw scarred for life. I felt like he was doing it more for himself, rather than the Clan. Brightpaw too. He caused his Clanmates much grief.
It was brave to not turn and run when they sghted the dogs, tho.

He was foolish. He didn't know what he was letting himself in for. He was also putting the rest of the clan in danger by trying to be the hero whilst knowing little about the danger and also by leading others e.g. Brightpaw into the danger.
He was angry because he had waited 'too long' to be a warrior and acted in anger and desperation to prove himself. He wasn't thinking of the rest of the clan when he went to follow the pack, just proving himself.

Though he seemed brave, he was a fool.
