The cat didn't like the idea of having the human hold him for much longer, but he figured he could tolerate for now. He was just grateful he was getting adopted today. He waited patiently as the human signed the papers, eager to go "home" so he could plot his escape.
(I feel bad for Julian. He just wants a friend but "Snowball" be playin lol)

(heheheheh he's looking for an anxiety-therapy cat. this is just an anxiety-giving cat)
The woman looked over everything briefly before passing Julian the cat carrier. Julian gave the cat a soft pat on the back before holding it over the box and carefully lowering it inside. He mumbled "sorry" a few more times as the woman closed up the box. With everything settled, Julian picked up the box, trying to hold it as steadily as he could. He headed out of the shelter, occasionally trying to look into the holes in the box to be sure the cat didn't seem nervous. He returned to the bus station and waited a short while for the vehicle to come around.
Admittedly, when the bus rolled to a stop, he still had some trouble convincing himself to get on the bus. Finally, he got himself on the first step and then he continued forward, placing the coins in the pay-box and taking a seat. The bus began to move again, and he grabbed the seat handle with one free hand, holding tightly.

Inside the box, "Snowball" was not having a good time. He didn't like the way the box shook when the human moved, and he definitely didn't like how it shook when the bus moved. It was too much like his trip to the shelter. He took a deep breath, crouching at the bottom and steadying himself with his flanks pressed into a corner and his claws digging, as much as they could, into the bottom of the box. He could see shadows flashing past the holes in the side as the bus passed trees and buildings, and he hoped the trip wouldn't be long.

It was almost a thirty minute bus ride before the vehicle stopped a fair distance from the apartment building. Julian released the seat handle and resumed his hold on the box. He moved quickly to get off the bus, though as soon as he was on the sidewalk again, he moved more carefully to keep the cat from being tossed around. He continued down the path for another few minutes before he came to the apartment building. He walked up the outdoor stairs and headed up to his home on the second floor. He had to set the carrier down to get his keys and unlock the door. Again, he picked up the box and moved the cat inside. Once he was in the house, he closed the door and made sure all the things he'd bought for the cat were set up right before carefully opening the box and stepping back to let the cat investigate.
The apartment was small, with a kitchen right next to the door, leading into the living room. There wasn't much for furniture, it was just a couch, coffee table, bookshelf, and a small tv. There were a few photo frames on the bookshelf, but the photos had been removed recently. The door to the bathroom and his room were both left closed.

When the box was set down outside, the cat started to paw at the top, hoping it would open and he could get free then and there, but there was no luck. He lashed his tail with annoyance as the box was picked up again and moved inside. He paced in circles now, waiting for the box to open, and after a few minutes it did. He crouched at the bottom for a moment before slowly sitting up and looking around the room. The human stood a few feet away, watching him. The cat took a moment to take it all in. Then, he jumped out of the box and ran. Where he was running to, he wasn't sure- he just hoped there would be somewhere in the apartment that would let him get out. He shot through the kitchen and jumped up on the first window he found, but it was closed, so he slid back down and continued, circling the entire house before he slowed down and began pawing at the doors, lashing his tail.

Well, he defiantly seemed familiar with being inside of a house. He didn't seem too shy about exploring and he didn't seem to be trying to hide... They might be right about the cat having lived with people before.
Julian watched the cat paw at the door a moment before he walked over and started to open the door. "Oh, wait..." He mumble outloud, scooping up the cat and moving him out of the way of the door. He closed himself inside the room and quickly checked he hadn't left anything out that the cat could choke on or get into. Once he was certain that the room was perfectly cat-safe, he opened the door again. He moved on to the bathroom door, checking the toilet lid was down so the cat couldn't fall in (or drink from it if cats did that), and he made sure all the soaps and cleaning things were tucked away safely.

The cat entered the bedroom, looking around for any method of escape, but there predictably was none. Next was the bathroom, with the same result. Well, that was disappointing, but to be expected. Still, maybe the human would be kind enough to just let him out? He went to the front door, sniffing along the bottom of the door for fresh air to make sure that was in fact the exit from the apartment, then looked at the human pleadingly and let out a sad meow.

Julian frowned a bit as the cat went for the front door. Was he used to being an outdoor cat? Either way, that didn't sound safe. He hadn't bought a collar or tags, and the city was full of things that could hurt the cat, and places the cat could get trapped. He gave a small shake of his head, though he didn't expect the cat to understand. "No, kitty." He said quietly, walking over and scooping up the cat carefully. He was still getting used to holding it. He walked back over to the living room and set it down on the couch, sort of hoping it found something comfortable about it and sat down. He took a seat on the cushion next to it, resting his head against the back cushion. Admittedly, the bus ride had made him nervous enough that he felt a bit tired already.

"Snowball" struggled a bit when the human tried to pick him up, but relented after a moment and allowed himself to be carried to the couch, giving up his attempt for freedom for the time being. After all, he figured he could just change forms and open the door when the human was asleep, since it seemed that he lived alone and the bakeneko therefore wouldn't have to worry about being caught in his human form. He just hoped the human wouldn't stay up too late; he wanted to be out of here as quickly as he could. With that plan in mind, he allowed himself to relax for the moment, jumping up on the back of the couch. He stretched, digging his claws into the fabric and arching his back, and then laid down with his front paws stretched out in front of him, one leg folded under him, and the other hanging off the back of the couch.

Julian looked over at the cat briefly when he felt it move around. Seeing it had made itself comfy he reached over and scratched it's head a few times. He seemed mellow enough. Or maybe he was just worn out from the journey home too. He wouldn't be able to stay awake more than a few hours from now... Would the cat be alright by itself? It seemed entirely possible he could have missed something obviously hazardous and the cat might eat something it shouldn't or get hurt on something... Maybe it would be best to set up the kennel... just for tonight. That way he could double check the house tomorrow with a clear head.

(lol I'm just imagining, like, "Snowball" is sitting here daydreaming his escape and Julian gets up to go to bed and he's like yes finally and then Julian's just like "into the carrier you go" and the cat's just like *angry Pepe meme*)
The cat purred as his head was scratched, legitimately enjoying the sensation. There were times when being pet by humans was nice, and now that he had a plan for how to get out of here, he could relax for a little while and enjoy the few perks of being with humans. Those mostly being getting petted and having a soft place to doze.

(hehehehhehehehehe sorry kitty)
Julian's phone buzzed briefly and he looked at it briefly. A message from the one of the friends he knew. He replied briefly, and then the phone began to buzz much more. After a moment of this. Julian sighed and turned the phone toward the cat. He snapped a quick picture and sent it out. The phone was quiet for a bit, then not only did that one friend reply, but he must have told the others about it and now they were all asking about the cat. What was his name? How old was he? What breed? Was he friendly? More pictures!!
Julian sighed and turned his phone off without answering any of them. He was tired, and they were asking too many questions at once. He'd answer later when he was more awake.

(lol an accurate depiction of having friends and pets)
The cat flicked his notched ears in annoyance at the buzzing of the phone, eyeing it suspiciously. It sounded like an insect and he wasn't sure why the human kept tapping it. Maybe that made it be quiet? Humans did some very strange things. He was glad when the buzzing finally stopped and the screen went dark for good.
After a bit, the cat's stomach growled, and he realized he would need to eat at some point. He got to his paws and jumped off the couch, padding through the house and sniffing at the air in search of prey. But it only smelled like human, and all of the weird artificial scents that went with them. Finally, he stopped by the food dish and sniffed at that, wrinkling his nose in distaste. He snapped up a few pieces, but he didn't find them at all appealing, and so he went back into the living. That's when the glass tank caught his sight and he narrowed his eyes, looking through the glass. Were those... fish? Why did the human keep them in that tank? Maybe to keep them fresh. The cat padded over, staring at them, and then jumped up on the lid to the tank. He paced back and forth on top of it, trying to figure out how to get it open so that he could eat.

Julian heard the soft padding of cat toes on a plastic lid. He frowned a bit then looked over. Seeing the cat standing on top of the fist tank, he jumped to is feet and darted over to the tank, lifting the cat off. "No no no no no...." He mumbled, his expression creasing again. "You're going to fall in. Or break the lid." He didn't care to have to replace part of the tank, or to have to clean up after the cat fell in and dragged water all around the house in a retreat like he'd seen with others before. He gently set the cat on the floor by his feet, looking back at the tank. Because he was next to it, the fish inside gathered up near the top of the water, looking for food that they expected to have been dropped in. Finding none, they scattered again.

The cat let out an annoyed mew when he was picked up, lashing his tail as he was moved to floor. He glared at the human as if to demand why he was being kept from his meal, before stalking back to the couch. He hopped up onto the couch and curled up, casting another glowering glance at the human as his belly rumbled. Still, he didn't want to give in and eat the disgusting pellets he'd been provided- he would be free to hunt as much as he wanted by moonhigh, if everything went according to plan.

Julian sighed a bit, looking into the tank for a moment. He'd already fed the fish before he'd left. He'd probably have to clean the tank tomorrow... He could probably put the cat in the other room for that. Still, the little creatures inside didn't seem to have any idea about the new presence in the house, or that it was very interested in them. He double-checked the lid was still closed before he went back over to the cat, resting his weight again the back of the sofa. He still had no idea what to name it... He was too tired tonight. He pet it lightly on the back before heading over to the cat crate he'd bought. He made sure that it was lined with a soft towel and he set the crate in his room. Just in case the crate wasn't very good and the cat was able to get out, he didn't want it getting into the living room and bothering the fish. He didn't like the idea of shoving the cat right back into a box after getting home, but he was tired and even if it wasn't late yet, he wanted to sleep. He returned to the living room and quietly mumbled.
"Bed time, kitty. You can look around more tomorrow." He said, picking up the cat and going into the bedroom.

The cat wiggled a little, not sure why he was being picked up. Maybe he just wanted to keep him in the room so that he couldn't get to the fish? He wasn't sure why the human was so protective of them... maybe he was saving them for something special. Either way, the bakeneko would be able to open the door to the room just the same as the front door, so he allowed the human to carry him into the other room.

Julian pet the cat's head as he walked, closing the bedroom door behind him. With another tired sigh, he crouched down and placed the cat inside of the kennel. "Sorry, kitty, but it's just for tonight." He promised quietly as he closed the door on the little crate. He headed back out to the living room briefly to check the front door was locked, then he returned to the bedroom. He didn't bother to change his clothes for sleep, only removing his sweater before turning off the lights and lying down on the bed.

When the cat realized what was happening, he began to struggle, growling as he tried to escape the human's grip, but the human was strong. The cat made an attempt to claw at him, but he couldn't quite reach, and was reduced to desperately try to squeeze out of the opening before he was shut in, which he failed to do. He let out a loud, frustrated meow, pacing in circles around the small interior of the crate and lashing his tail in annoyance. This isn't at ALL how it was supposed to go! he thought, growling to himself out loud. How am I supposed to escape now? The carrier was far too small to change shape in, and as he looked at the handle, he knew he wouldn't be able to get it open with his paws.

Julian heard the cat's complaints and frowned quietly. "I'm sorry..." He mumbled again. He knew the animal didn't understand, but it didn't feel right to just ignore him. "It won't be like this tomorrow night." He promised agin, pulling a blanket over himself and lying his head on one of the pillows. He closed his eyes and tried to fall asleep. He didn't have to try very hard, since he was asleep within a few minutes.

The cat continued to pace for a while, growling to himself. He too concerned with trying to figure out an alternative escape to listen to the human, and missed the comment that the next night wouldn't be the same. Instead, he was forming another plan. I'll just have to be an inconvenience enough for him to want to get rid of me, the cat finally decided, calming down and settling into the back of the carrier to wait out the night. He could tell that the human was already asleep now, and his tail-tip twitched in annoyance at the knowledge that, if not for the plastic prison around him, he could already be on his way to freedom. But he had to continue to be patient for now. The cat sighed, resting his head on his paws and allowing himself to drift to sleep for the time being.

(so my theory is that after like two or three days of this, he starts to get used to the apartment despite himself and lets his guard down, which ends up being problematic because it's when he gets comfortable that he starts to sleep well and that's when he starts accidentally shifting. So he like falls asleep on the couch or something and then later Julian is just like wtf who are you and what are you doing in my house and the cat is just like "dammit not again")

Julian was quiet for several hours. He woke with a start before the sun came up, looking around quickly. He could feel his hands shaking, and he gripped the blanket to try to settle it. He could feel sweat between his fingers, and as the shaking stopped he wiped his hands dry. He looked over at the cat kennel, that being the only shape in the room he didn't immediately recognize. He sighed a bit, seeing the cat instep inside. He sort of understood why it had been recommended... He wanted to pet it and try to calm himself down... but he didn't want to wake it up. After a few minutes, he lied back down, trying to relax himself to sleep. Unfortunately, he couldn't get himself back to sleep.

The cat had slept lightly, and he awoken when he heard the human begin to stir. He raised his head, blinking open his eyes and letting out a wide yawn as he looked around the room. The sun wouldn't be up for a while yet, so he thought it was odd for a human to waking up at this time. Still, he wasn't one to question it. He just hoped that he would be let out when the human got up, so he stood and circled the carrier a couple of times, waiting for the human to get out of bed and release him.
(lol new theory: Julian does let the cat out of the crate for the anxiety thing and the cat is like "I could totally leave now" but he feels bad for Julian so he stays and then of course everything goes downhill from there. It could go either way I guess.)
(Edit: just saw your second post. My new concept works better for that yeah lol.)

(X3)
Julian heard the cat moving around and looked over again. He must have woken up right after he'd looked away. Well, he clearly wanted out of the crate... Julian sat up slowly and moved over to the other side of the bed where he could reach the cat crate. He opened the crate and lifted the cat out with one hand, carefully moving it up onto the bed next to him. He pet its head a few times, though he resisted pulling it to him. He didn't want to trap the animal in a hug since that seemed the fastest way to get scratched by any cat. He sighed again and rested his back against the headboard of the bed. He knew he probably wouldn't get back to sleep tonight. At least the cat could be out of the little cage.

The cat couldn't help but purr as he was removed from the crate, pleased to be free, but he was surprised when he was moved to the bed and the human laid back down. Was he intending to go back to sleep? Perhaps this would work after all, though why the human would let him out halfway through the night was beyond him. But then, he didn't really understand anything humans did.
He crouched on the bed for a moment, enjoying the petting, and finally settled down. He would be stuck here at least until the human went back to sleep, so he may as well enjoy it while it lasted. Then he could be on his way.

Julian remained very still aside from quietly petting the cat. He was glad the cat happened to be very accepting of petting and didn't try to run off or turn on him after too many strokes and claw up his hand. He was able to relax a bit, but his eyes stayed opened. He wasn't going to get back to sleep tonight. Watching the cat in his little loaf-position and repeatedly running his hand down the cat's back ended up more soothing than he thought it would be. Admittedly, he hadn't been keen on keeping animals. Just having the fish had taken a fair amount of convincing. It just wasn't something he saw as sanitary or necessary. But it was nice.

(if neither of them are going back to sleep and they're just gonna chill here for a while you wanna skip ahead a bit until something else interesting happens? Lol)
The cat slowly started to relax more, enjoying being petted like this. It was nicer than he had thought it would be, and before long he had even begun to doze. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to stick around for another day, besides the horrible pellet food. After all, it didn't seem like there were any children in this house, and the human seemed to be quiet and gentle enough that the cat could at least tolerate him, and even enjoy his company to a degree. And to be honest, it had been a long time since the bakeneko had really had any company. Seasons in fact, more than he could count- and not just because he didn't know numbers.
