Akubasically, it seems transphobic mostly to me bc by assuming gender roles ur also assuming that ur kid 100% feels cis. it's also like "you're expected to be this way and you can't be anything else" or whatever that's the best i can come to explaining my thought process abt it idk it's complicated. i don't want to go into a huge long detailed paragraph abt how i feel bc someone's bound to jump on my case and i dont feel like debating atm

LET ME TELL YOU A STORY ABT TOYS.
so when i came out as trans, one of the first things that my mom said to me as she was trying to get through her crisis of having a trans child was "but you never wanted to play with boy toys like cars and trucks growing up." and first of all it doesn't matter because toys are not what defines your gender. you wanna know why i didn't play with cars and trucks ???? because i was dfab and my parents would never buy me cars/trucks???? kids aren't born w/ an automatic liking of cars/trucks if they're boys and dolls when they're girls ?? and i have 2 older sisters. so you wanna know what toys we ALREADY had in the house because i already had 2 older sisters?? you guessed right "girl" toys! and you wanna know what i played with?? their toys.
i mean i never did like playing with dolls that much (they freaked me out my sister would get like realistic bby dolls ugh) and i would mostly play with stuffed animals/plastic animal toys. also i had a lot of littlest pet shop toys to play with. which lps are usually marketed towards girls.
but either way playing with "girl" toys doesn't mean im any less of a boy now ??? it literally doesn't make any difference. and even if i was cis, i'd still be dating girls because i don't like boys, so did playing with "girl" toys make me gay ???
side note: my oldest sister was really into legos and played with lego sets (which are typically sold towards boys) and she is straight and cis so obviously it makes no difference LOL

I find it kind of weird that toys are gendered, to be honest. I mean, I guess there are some things that tend to appeal to boys more than girls or vice versa, but I don't think that, for example, toy cars are inherently masculine or whatever. Kids should be allowed to play with what they want.
I don't understand the stigma around boys playing with Barbie dolls and such. I mean, if you look at Action Man figures, which are considered boys' toys, they're essentially dolls too.
Anecdotally, when I was a kid I hated baby dolls with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, usually played with toy dinosaurs, hated dresses and pink, and now I'm actually really girly. My parents just got me the toys I liked most rather than stereotypically "girly" toys, which I think was a good idea.

i feel like i should add on something i have a friend who very much likes 'female orientated stuff' and he's straight as a board so honestly?? Toys do nothing to sexuality or identity. instead, now you get a dude who can sew clothes better than me, a femALE BTW, and look fab while wearing it.
Sadly I wasn't there halloween to see his alice dress, ): damn all i got were pictures He actually feels super self-conscious about it and it really sucks because of the stigma that he can't have interest in feminine things.

oh hell yes. i'm a cis gal, and i played with things like hot wheels (remember those?) and those toy trucks and trains in the backyard when i was a small human.
as said and stated before, it doesn't make a difference. i wish people would abolish gender roles already.

i mean from my experience, kids tend to naturally gravitate towards the toys aimed at their gender. I'm a traditionalist, as y'all know, so I do believe in some degree of gender roles. However I really wouldn't mind if a girl wanted to play with the boy toys, or the boy with girl toys. So I put yes. Although in some cases it depends on the kind of toy/reason why. Like if I had a son and he wanted to play with his sister's dolls, I'd see if he would prefer to play with more masculine dolls like GI Joe or something. If not, oh well. I wouldn't stop him.

as a (cisgender) girl who asked for hot wheels toys as a kid, but also had a fair share of polly pockets... let kids play how they want yknow?
like there's nothing wrong of course with a little girl liking dolls or a little boy liking action figures inherently, it's just when that stuff is forced on people it's yikes.
reminds me of this conversation i overheard in a gift shop once, ugh, it still makes me upset to remember. a little girl and someone who i assume was her mother were looking for something, i assume for her brother or some male relative? and she found, like, a cool necklace or something, and the mom was like "no, sweetie, let's get something made for boys" or smth along those lines. like, not 'he probably wouldn't like that' or anything, but like, explicitly talking abt the gender stuff like yikes wow
honestly my favorite toys as a kid were little animal figurines (mostly dogs and cats) which were awesome

let them play with whatever they want to play with?? it's the playing and the skills that develops that matters. as long as you're not letting your child play with scissors or something like that I honestly don't see the problem. your child will develop the same motor-skills and mental abilities regardless of whether you give them dolls or cars, so you might as well let them pick so they have fun while doing it.

Very Western concept gender = what you identify as This is pretty spot on, except it's not really just a western concept. A lot of people around the world tend to confuse the two as the same thing. Wait, I might be misreading this. Could you explain what you mean by "western concept"

It's not that I didn't know, just that I had no idea why they pointed that out when we weren't even really discussing personal gender identity. In this case, if I were to use either word, it would more or less mean the same thing in the context as we are not particularly discussing gender identity.
