Previously...
You wake up early one morning to find a strange text from your friend telling you that there's been an outbreak of a strange disease and that he's been evacuated to some quarantine zone. He tells you the name of the zone, Spaga Falls, and asks you to come, warning you of the imminent danger. You go to reply, only to see that you have another text from a different friend. This friend tells you of the same outbreak, and asks you to join them in the Rapid Springs quarantine zone, which is where they were evacuated to. You decide to investigate this situation before you respond to either of them. You peek out your window. Everything seems fine.
Getting out of bed, you wander downstairs. Your significant other is not home; after seeing that it is after six, you realize that they must have left for work. You decide to turn on the news, only to see a special report about the aforementioned outbreak. The news reporter looks to be in extreme distress as she reports that thousands of people across the United States have shown symptoms of the disease; the number of infected individuals has quadrupled overnight, transforming the situation into a full-scale outbreak. You turn off the news, wondering why you weren't evacuated as your friends were. Maybe because they are both in the city, whilst you are in a rural area?
It doesn't matter, you decide. What matters most now is deciding what to do next. Your significant other works in the city, so there's a chance that they may have been escorted to the Spaga Falls or Rapid Springs quarantine zones. There's also the possibility that they evaded the escort and are trying to find their way out of the city and through the chaos. After grabbing a backpack and filling it with some supplies - including a butcher knife for defense -, you decide on what to do.
Now...
Having come to the conclusion that you should head to the city, you write a quick note to your s/o in case they should return. Then, you leave your home and get into your car. Pulling out of your driveway, you head into the city.
On your way there, you see for yourself the carnage that resulted from the outbreak. Wrecked cars are piled everywhere, some with dead people still inside. The ashes of what could have once been a building still smoldering. Strange, sickly-looking people wandering around aimlessly. You try to ignore it, pushing down the nervous butterflies in your stomach.
The wreckage gets more frequent as you get closer and closer to the city. By the time you arrive, there's so much debris that you're restricted to one lane. Eventually, as you get within three blocks of your s/o's workplace, you come across a roadblock. Several cars are piled up in the middle of an intersection, making it so your car can't get past. Frustrated, you get out and continue on foot.
After a bit of walking, you come across your s/o's office building. As you prepare to enter, someone calls out to you.
You turn. A man hobbles toward you, his leg bleeding profusely. There is a pained, distressed look in his eyes. He rambles to you in an almost incoherent way. All you can make of his near-gibberish is that he and his family were in a car wreck, and need help.
You now have another choice to make.
