I was always told by family that whatever native americans didn't decide to run casinos or high end business lived in poor slummy reservations with little to no education other than tribe elders.
I never thought that could have been anything close to the truth but I also neglected to ever consider finding out myself, despite that i am part cherokee. I never looked into that side of my family history much. Though now this thread has piqued my interest.
I was also told that if a native american decided to not be a part of the traditions of the tribe they were thrown out and shunned in the community as white-sympathizers. Something I also have a hard time believing.

would you say that, overall, the customs and world outlook of your tribe/community has changed over the past few generations? if so, how, and how much?

Oh dear. It's actually literally terrifying to know that's not far from true. I never liked how we (as in just this civilization in general) pushed you out of lands and into that kind of situation. But I thought they would have at least made things tolerable. I'm not sure what else to say. But something needs to desperately change.

So are Native American tribes similar to Amish or do you guys use all regular technology? How do your tribes work exactly, like do you guys live in the same area/house/etc or just meet once in a while?
I'm partially Native American myself, not exactly sure which tribe, just know that I have Native ancestry.

whoa, i didn't know about most of that; i remember when i was younger i found native american culture & history to be interesting, but they never went into detail about it in school, as we only learned about it fully once.
it's amazing how you answer all of these questions so easily ~

I have another question but it's not as relevant to the subject. It's more so related to not being a white person in general rather than being Native American
It's important to me though

IM RESURRECTING THIS THREAD AFTER A YEAR
@victorious
three types of racism that I've personally experienced -well intentioned -ignorant but not mean -ignorant and mean
the well intentioned are the white moms that come up to me after a piano performance, in complete amazement. completely baffled by the idea of an indian playing piano. to the point where she feels the need to look me in the face and say, completely genuine: "omgg youre doing so well for your people! a! native?!? playing piano!?! astounding" i hold very little resentment towards the well intentioned, they got the spirit, they're just a little confused and i relate to that.
second are the ignorant but not mean. these are the ones that ask me if i can talk to seals and bears. again, not mean, not rude, just a lil ignorant. but willing to learn and that counts for so many points. and they will get a very sincere, thorough explanation out of me. and they should count themselves lucky that they asked me and not a more touchy brown person who is tired enough of these questions to give them an earful. because i've noticed that seriously deters people from asking questions which is bad.
and finally. the rude ones. in this category, we've got two subcategories. the immature ones and the straight up malicious ones. the immature ones are the ones i go to high school with. these are the ones that are insecure in the fact that they've got some serious white privilege and are still failing so they lash out and call the brown ones 'rez rats'. they just need to grow up. but the really frustrating ones are the old white men that sit in coffee shops in little groups and just rant about indians. 'oh they're so lazy, dirty alcoholics on welfare, they must be so stupid to let themselves fall into gang life!' they clutch onto these stereotypes because they know they have material. they know they can call on the percentage of natives vs white people in Canada's prisons, they know they can talk about how many indigenous people have had serious run-ins with alcohol in their lives, and as far as they're concerned, that's all they need. they don't consider how these stereotypes came to be in the first place. they're one hundred percent ready to jump into the story of how their scottish relative from way back when jumped off the boat onto the coast of canada with nothing. made a life for himself and 'never asked for any money from the dang government!' but they don't consider that. white people didn't need a permit to leave town. did not need explicit government permission to run a farm (even though the land chosen for reservations is impossible to use anyway). was allowed to move. wasn't banned from certain areas. acted freely without the watchful eye of indian officers. it's just easier for them to assume the playing field was leveled. my father has taught me that to reason with those people is fruitless. they're set in their ways. i have not challenged that rule yet but i'll let you know if i do.

I'm not sure if we ever talked, but stil, welcome back to the forums, Ace. I've always been fascinated by Native culture in general and have even considered writing a story inspired by Native America, so I think you can imagine the amount of research I've been trying to do for this. Sorry for the rambling. ^^" Anyway, what tribe are you descended from?

been fantastic. just finished rearranging my entire house over the past two weeks so i feel very clean : ) also got accepted into UWC. one of the only fifty students they accept from canada. OOC That’s awesome Ace, congratulations! My sister got married a month ago, and we’ve been redoing the basement. But other than that things have been pretty calm for me. I’ve been putting a lot of effort into my writing and art lately. I’m actually working on a story that I want to try and publish later this year.

ahhh i'm proud of you!!! how far into the story are you?? OOC Heh...not as far as I’d like. I mean, I’m a decent chunk in, but there’s still a lot to go. I’ve been bad and busied myself with a roleplay instead.

I HAVEN'T SEEN YOU IN SO LONG I MISSED YOU. (was Leapkit, deleted for dramatic reasons, came back because i'm a sore loser who can't leave this place lmao) Oddly, I was thinking abt this thread a few days ago so it's kinda weird i see it again now. And its kinda cool honestly because now i'm a lot more knowledgeable about some things and slightly more in touch with my cherokee side of the family, but.... growing up being essentially white by both skin tone and culture, that hardly means a damn thing. So I'm still super curious about quite a few things.

Just read through all your other responses and I'm absolutely in awe. History books really, in fact, do no justice. Thanks for enlightening us.
I have a couple questions myself, they're all kinda similar I guess but different in certain ways
1. What are the relationships between different groups of Native Americans that you know of? Do they still hold onto old rivalries or have they put them aside for the greater good of all natives? Or is it sort of both, but generational? 2. Do you think Native American people are starting to integrate more into the culture around them, do you think they are starting to look back to their roots and go back to the culture, or are things staying mostly the same or stagnant in that topic? 3. What is this nation that you described as being in/going to be in hopefully now and in the future for Native Americans? Is it more of a metaphorical one where you're sort of "in the world but not of the world", where you're technically still in "white society" but have the freedom/more freedom to live how you want in certain areas, or is it a literal one where you hope Native Americans can have their own literal nation with its own government and borders?
