I'm rereading Yellowfang's Secret and Sagewhisker says that she's been given this power to feel other cats' pain for a reason, and that is to be a medicine cat. But is this true? Because the topic was dropped after Yellowfang learned how to control it. Sagewhisker talked about this power before to control it, so why couldn't she have just remained as a warrior? She also sounded forceful when Yellowfang didn't want to be a medicine cat. I understand that there were no apprentices or kits interested into becoming a medicine cat, but the way how Sagewhisker dealt with this issue is odd to me, especially since she used the "You were given this power to become a medicine cat" excuse.

I agree. It seemed as if this power actually didn't remain once Yellowfang was into her medicine cat training...

Sagewhisker could have just been desperate for an apprentice and knew that she was getting old. She also had a point, if you think about it. Her powers would have been a hindrance in battle and they did help with recognizing what ails her patients. I guess there was just no need to bring up her powers once she learned to control them. Sagewhisker got the apprentice she needed and Yellowfang's powers were no longer the main issue.

The Erin Hunter team needed an excuse for Yellowfang to turn from a warrior to a medicine cat.

No it was just trickery. But I dont blame Sagewhisker for what she did. She was grwoing old and SC had so much battles without a medicine cat they would all have died from infection or blood loss.
Im not trying to say what Sagewhisker did is right but what she did is exuceable as she did it for the will of Shadowclan. She was wrong to did what she did but can we imagine SC without a medicine cat at the rein of Raggedstar and Brokenstar. It would be tragic and as I said they would all die soon enough
Luckily Yellowfang was befooled and trained Runningnose.

I think in story, Sagewhisker was desperate for an apprentice due to her age and she saw the opportunity to snatch up an apprentice in Yellowfang with her powers that seems to hinder her warrior duties. In reality, the Erin's were lost and needed an excuse for her to go warrior to medicine cat by giving her powers. I mean, this was released in 2012, where the last hope was released and powers would've been fresh on the writers minds, so I would've seemed like a good idea.

Well, I can certainly understand Sagewhisker's decision to trick Yellowfang into becoming her apprentice. Whether it was really the reason she had received her power or not, the fact is that it is a useful power to have as a medicine cat. So it makes sense Sagewhisker would want her to become one. Plus, even after learning how to control it, it could still be potentially dangerous for her to be a warrior. Controlling her power around one or two cats in pain is one thing, but controlling it in the midst of battle, being bombarded by pain from cats- ally and enemy- all around her? That must take great concentration and effort which would leave her vulnerable to an attack.

I really doubt Yellowfang could've been an effective warrior with her powers. Yeah, she can control it in a peaceful medicine den, with only the pain of one or two cats, but on a hectic battlefield with dozens of intense injuries, not so much. She ended up being a pretty effective medicine cat anyways, and she would've been even better if she hadn't hooked up with Raggedstar.

True, one does have to wonder though... If Yellowfang remained a warrior would someone (Sagewhisker or otherwise) and teach her to control it enough so that she could fight reliably? It would take some great effort, but turning off powers is possible (as demonstrated near the end of The Last Hope)... Maybe she could have figured out how to turn her power off for a while...
Interestingly, I read a fan fiction where Yellowfang refuses Sagewhisker, staying a warrior. However, the power isn't really brought up all that much, and it focuses on what Brokentail becomes, and his struggles.
I always thought the rules of the power was that they could only be controlled if the user was surrounded or actively into healing. Sagewhisker probably knew this, but Yellowfang probably wouldn't believe her if she told her flat out, so she waits until she can't function as a warrior and understands it's going on...

The reason I hate Sagewhisker
I still wish Yellowfang would have become a medicine cat of her own free will AFTER Sage died without having an apprentice because Yellowfang had interest in herbs and devotion to her clan enough to sacrifice her warrior life for the benefit of her clan. Instead we got a medicine cat with a horrible personality and a pretty lame excuse for Yellowfang to become a medicine cat :/

When I saw Sagepaw I was like " Oh shes cool " then early Sagewhisker was also cool. But then she turned into a butt because she never found an apprentice lol.
