I mean, it was cool to see a ShadowClan cat's POV, but why did the Erins kill off Flametail? Littlecloud was getting old and he needed Flametail. Jayfeather lost his job because of Flametail's death, and Flametail acted all bitter and vengeful about it. I don't like Flametail, but I think he would have been an okay medicine cat for ShadowClan.

They needed more plot in OOTS. Though I wish that plot was filled by making the final battle better.
Plus, it also dooms ShadowClan making them easier to fall in AVOS. I'm sure he would have been a fine medicine cat, but we haven't seen a clan deal with the loss of both its medicine cats yet and that would actually be interesting to read.

As Umbra has pointed out. It makes sense to have killed him off, even though he seemed like a pretty cool character (even though I thought he was kind of a jerk).

I don't understand Flametail's death either. It seems like they couldn't think of a plot for the book, so they killed him for extra drama

His death stirred up a lot of drama so I'd see why they went that route. He also served as a small red-herring for that whole fire omen in TLH.

It seemed weird to me that they even had a POV for him. I just reread the books and it's still sort of hard to see the point of him. I thought he'd be the fourth cat, but nope

I don't even understand why they gave him a point of view in the first place. I liked Flametail, but it didn't really do anything for the plot.
His death was for the sole purpose of torturing readers.

They needed to advance the plot. The medicine cats wouldn't have regrouped and brought Starclan together to fight the darkforest. One change can alter all of the events. Who knows? What if the clans lost the battle because Starclan and the medicine cats didn't makeup.

Flametail's purpose was solely to cause emotion between Dawnpelt and ThunderClan, make Jayfeather lose his duties, and for extra drama. At this point in the series, the Erins cared more about drama and tension than logic and sensible plot.
