Hello! Welcome to the Chinese Chat Thread, specifically Mandarin Chinese. I noticed there wasn't a Chinese thread created yet, so I decided to create one. My Chinese skills are about the equivalent to a native third-grader though, maybe below since I don't use Chinese enough outside of speaking/listening. I thought maybe chatting here might help. You're welcome to give a few pointers to others here, as long as it's polite and the other person is okay with it. ^_^ Anyhow... chat? 你们好! 我的名字是企饿. 你们?

你好! 我可以问, 为什么可笑吗? Yeah, it can annoying at times, especially when you have to lean in really close to the screen to read a character to see if it's the right one.

你好 Firestone! (I would say more but I'm on a different computer and I can't figure out how you type Chinese on this one) 你好。台灣官方採用中國傳統的繁體字,所以有些字的形狀會和你們學的簡體字不一樣 另外,我們使用的注音輸入法只有台灣在使用,和你們在學的漢語拼音是不同的系統 Hi. Taiwan uses traditional Chinese characters as official language, so some of the characters look different than the simplified Chinese characters you learn.
Also, the typing system Bopomofo we used are exclusive in Taiwan, differ from the system Pinyin you learn.
(Key words can be searched on wiki)

yo, I've always been very curious as to how Chinese and Madarin work as a language-- basically, how they're structured. Would anyone mind giving me a brief explanation? For instance, Latin designates parts of speech by the endings on the nouns, whereas English is a very orderly language (specific word order dictates meaning).

Chinese characters were originated from images, so every individual character has its own meaning(s). Examples: Fish, horse, volume (book) Characters can be constructed to become terms and phrases. Take "warriors" for example. 戰士 → 戰(war) + 士(soldier) Together the term means "warrior" BTW, there's a fun fact here. How "Firestar" is translated into Chinese is breaking the name into 2 vocabularies (since that's how Warriors naming systems work) and translate them individually. Fire is translated into 火 while star is 星, but putting them together 火星 it means Mars. Yes, we call Mars "Firestar" in Chinese because it's a red planet. Although it's not a star in modern astronomy, anything that glows on sky during night is deemed as stars for the ancients.

Thanks for the info. ^_^ I'd also like to add that there's also pinyin, which is kind of like the Chinese alphabet for the pronunciation of characters/words.

Thanks for the info. ^_^ I'd also like to add that there's also pinyin, which is kind of like the Chinese alphabet for the pronunciation of characters/words. I'm from Taiwan and we don't use pinyin system for that. We have our system that you won't find it anywhere except here Here's how Taiwan translate Warriors naming system. ─Kits─Translation method:小 (little) + prefix name Examples: 小鴿 ( Dovekit), 小獅 ( Lionkit), 小藤 (Ivykit) The only exception case:CloudtailDuring his kithood there's another character Littlecloud. Since little is translated to be 小 it's gonna conflict with Cloudkit. So the translator translated Cloudkit's name outside the system. ─Apprentices─Translation method:prefix name + 掌 (paw) Examples: 灰掌 ( Graypaw), 葉掌 ( Leafpaw), 虎掌 ( Tigerpaw) ─Warriors/medicine cats/deputies/elders─Translation method:Split the name into its prefix and suffix, translate individually and put together again Examples: 泥毛 ( Mudfur), 楓影 ( Mapleshade), 鵝羽 ( Goosefeather) ─Clan leader─Translation method:prefix name + 星 (star) Examples: 高星 ( Tallstar), 黑星 ( Blackstar), 一星 ( Onestar) ─Ancients/ancient tribe cats─Translation method:Basically same as warriors/medicine cats/deputies/elders since their names were made of 2 words too.─Modern tribe cats─Translation method:Probably the hardest names for translation. How we do is trying the best to literally translate every individual word. However, to keep the words properly in Chinese grammar, we often add extra Chinese character(s) into the translated names. Examples: 溪兒, 來自小魚游溪 ( Brook Where Small Fish Swim)
─Kittypets─Translation method:Homophonic translation Examples: 史莫奇 ( Smudge), 海蒂 ( Hattie)

It's alright, I just said to Firestone that I'm surprised to find Taiwanese here, and we discussed how slowly the Chinese version of the books are published, that's all I actually thought your Mandarin is good enough, considering my own limited English vocabulary
