I just got back from Hawaii. I've rarely left the western U.S., let alone North America, so it was definitely a shock seeing all the birds there. I saw my first Common Myna. I was like ahhhhhh exotic bird it sounds so exotic and looks so pretty eeek. I treated it like the most unique bird in the world and I was so exited. Then after a while I realized there were a lot of them. Like, everywhere. On the island I was on- Maui - you can't go anywhere without seeing one. So I looked the bird up and saw this: ... and I'm like, oh, I just stumbled upon the equivalent of the European starling in the south pacific xP but hey, it all depends on your perspective, right? To me it was a brand new and exciting bird, but to natives it was a pest. Yet if the natives were to visit Kansas and saw the European Starling, they'd be pretty excited. Which is kinda funny. I did see some actually native and exotic birds there though. I saw a lot of Zebra Doves, which were really small and cute and I couldn't get enough of them. Pacific Plovers were pretty common as well as the less common Spotted Dove, which was larger and plainer. I saw 1 Nene, which was exciting cause I've heard a lot about them and how they saved from extinction. And plenty of others. I even saw a really cool Crested Cardinal. I felt the same way about the White Ibis. Then I looked through my pictures and realized that the "wood storks" where giant flocks of those. That's pretty cool! Most of what I saw was pretty common, I think. I don't really know how common lots of birds are, though, so if I saw anything really rare for the area I was in (hour north of Daytona), can somebody tell me?

One of my friends likes birds, and he was super jealous of the fact that I was literally hanging out with some cranes.

TWENTY In taxonomic order: Blue-Winged Teal Wood Stork Double-Crested Cormorant Anhinga Little Blue Heron Tricolored Heron Cattle Egret White Ibis Glossy Ibis Sandhill Crane Black-Necked Stilt Willet Sanderling Royal Tern Eurasian Collared-Dove Red-Bellied Woodpecker Pileated Woodpecker Fish Crow Northern Mockingbird Eastern Towhee The towhee and mockingbird were in Atlanta; everything else was Florida, near Daytona. The cranes were my favorite. I got within 5 feet of the three of them. They were the most majestic thing I'd ever seen. I'll post pictures once I work my way through them. Ahhh that's so cool, so jealous right now xD

British Columbia? What cool stuff do they have there that you didn't get to see? It seems like they'd have a lot of exotic stuff.

Sorry for my disappearance >_< I've been seeing robins at school lately! I also went down to the harbor a couple days ago, saw a bunch of gulls (not sure which species because they all look SO SIMILAR), and a cormorant

well I only knew they were snow geese because there were black birds and white birds that were approximately duck-shaped and on the water, and no other bird fits that description where I live other than migrating snow geese. Didn't actually see much of them at all, I was driving past them.

Oh lol
The closest I've come to seeing a snow goose was a Ross's Goose that stayed at the park near me for a few days. I was really surprised to see it, since I'm all the way down in Southern California by the beach and it was all by itself... I thought it had gotten lost or something xD

Holy crap I love birds. I used to watch and study birds a lot as a kid, when I lived in New Brunswick.
The greatest day of my young life was when a few ceder waxwings were in our yard. I lived in the forest on the Bay of Fundy, so I saw a bunch of cool birds. Woodpeckers, hummingbirds, chickadees, doves, cardinals, orioles, jays, nuthatches, etc.
My grandpa built a birdhouse with a glass side covered by a flap, so you could peek at the chickadee nest inside. He love birds so much, except for grackles and blue jays lol.
Where I live now, in Alberta, all I see are magpies (which are cool too). A family friend has tons of purple martins that nest in their yard though, as they made a special house for them.
