That sounds fun! I would totally do that, but I can't paint to save my life lol So instead I just try and take pictures of the birds I see

*no post in months* *makes one post* *all kinds of activity* I AM A GOD yeah, I do pictures too. We're going to visit some colleges during spring break and go to the Sun 'N Fun airshow, in Florida, so I'm hoping to see some stuff we don't have in Kentucky. (Snail kite = totally realistic hope)

lol nice
I'm not going anywhere during spring break, so I'll be seeing more of the same stuff xD I have been seeing quite a lot of hawks in my area recently, haven't gotten a close enough look at them to accurately identify them tho rip
Florida is pretty great for wildlife, I saw so many different shorebirds last time I went... but unfortunately I didn't have my book with me and it was kinda seven years ago so I don't remember them all... ;-;
But I wish you luck with seeing a snail kite, kites are awesome

There's only 1,000 in the U.S, and we're only going to be in the summer part of their range. I've seen either a Cooper's or Harris's hawk. I've declared it to be Harris's because It was kind of in the open, but I wouldn't bet any money on it. They're SO DANG SIMILAR. Also what's probably a broad-winged hawk. My favorite bird I've seen is probably an osprey, or what I thought was a golden eagle at first but turned out to be a dark-morph red-tailed hawk. That's still cool, though. You rarely see the off-color ones.

I used to be really into birding in High School, though I've sorta gotten uninterested in the hobby. I still love birds, and I always have feeders outside my house, but I don't spend hours on end looking through bird books just for the heck of it anymore.
It's still fun seeing new birds though- I've always wanted to see a Cedar Waxwing- they looked beautiful but they never reached as south as me and so I just assumed I would never see one. Then I go up to college in Idaho and boom- I see a huge flock of them foraging in a juniper tree during the winter. It was pretty awesome.

If anybody knows what they're doing, clarification would be nice. It was really big, which is why I thought golden eagle after I realized it wasn't a vulture. (I didn't have my camera, so I had to use my iPhone)

Definitely looks like a young bald eagle Here is a refrence: The mostly yellow beak with a black tip is what confirms it for me the most. I could be wrong though.

YESSSSSSS It was a pretty big for a hawk, and I now realize red-tails beaks are stubbier. Time to go put a check next to "Bald Eagle" in my book!

Oh nice! Bald Eagles are so cool!! I was lucky enough to see a couple in Yellowstone last summer, from really far away tho ;-;
Also no way! Ospreys are my fav too! xD I usually see at least one when I go camping over the summer

Peregrines are my favorite. Never seen one though. We see ospreys once or twice each year when we go to the beach in South Carolina. We see them catch something kind of near the shore a lot. We stay near Myrtle, but it's not crowded.

Peregrines are also awesome, but then I love birds of prey in general xD I've seen quite a few peregrines, where I go camping and then also a couple south of me in San Diego, CA which surprised me
I have also discovered a hawk nest at my school! Now if only I had my binoculars with me so I could get a better view of them ;n;

I'll try and get some pictures!

Just this morning the local Cooper's Hawk once again tried to attack birds at my feeder. It's had about 5-6 attempts so far that I've witnessed. Not sure if it's been successful yet.
It was quite amusing telling my little sister about it. She whined and asked me if we need to take the feeder down- but I gently told her that that's just the downside of feeders- they feed birds, but they also feed all birds, not just the ones that eat seeds.

This is going to sound really mean, but that'd be really cool to see o:
The other day I saw a hawk chasing after some crows, though they flew out of view before anything really happened

Yeah though it would be sad for the bird it would be pretty cool for the hawk. "Fish gotta swim, birds gotta eat".
And that's cool you saw that- I usually see the other way around, with crows constantly mobbing hawks.

Might have been a young red-tail without the red tail yet. It was about that size. I also say some bird with a red head and tan body. Maybe some kind of woodpecker? I was thinking Northern Flicker, but it had too much red, not just a stripe on the back of the head.

well There is a kind of duck called a "Redhead"

Post by Πιghtωιηg on Mar 6, 2017 9:12:58 GMT -5
If that's not it, how much of the head is red and is it a bright red or dull red? Also, if you say what state you live in, that would help.

Any of these? Because if not, that's every bird with a reddish head in the Geese, Swans, and Ducks section of Wikipedia's List of Birds of Alberta and I'm out of ideas.
