Amanda felt that James wasn't next to her anymore, and she started to roll into his spot so she could still feel his warmth.

(Yeah, Thayer loves him, but he spoils both of them just the same.)
Danir stayed with the others while Mei left. He didn't stop her, knowing she had probably had enough of the scene before them for the day. "I guess we've done what we can today," he said. "Tomorrow I'll try to find out more about the body after we talk with the weapon masters."
Thayer, actually, was back in her room. She had taken the luxary of taking another bath, feeling filthy after the days events. By the time her sister joined her, she was lounging on her bed, amusing herself by levitating a small marble in the air.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Haley jumped at the sudden sound of another voice. She turned around, clutching her phone tightly in her hand, as if that would do any good if she was being attacked. Quickly, she took in the sight of the boy jogging to her. He didn't look suspicious, at least in his clothing choice. That didn't mean he didn't have ill intentions. "Yes, I'm alright," she answered, keeping a careful eye on him. "I'm just heading home. It's just right up the street, so I don't have much longer to walk."
~*
Dakota was checking out the damage of her tire. She sighed. She didn't have a spare, in fact, that was her spare. That was just great. The girl had just pulled out her phone to call someone to pick her up when she heard something crashing through the forest. Looking up, she paused, trying to spot what it was coming towards the road, hoping it was just a deer passing through. However, it wasn't a deer, but a person. A person that collapsed on the ground and was bleeding. "Oh my god!" she exclaimed, hurrying over to the fallen boy. "Are you alright?"
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
James noticed her roll over to where he had once been and smiled. Then he went down to greet his mother.

[best uncle 2k16]
Chastmere, while nervous, seemed appeased. "I'll get to that list right away, then. In the meantime, if you need anything, you are more than welcome to knock on my door personally."
"Or mine," Pax volunteered. "The faster we resolve this, the better."
Stopping only to knock and not waiting for an answer, Meira walked in on the marble trick and caught herself grinning before wiping it from her face. Shutting the door behind her and dropping herself on the end of the bed, she launched immediately into the details of Danir's magic and the conclusions they'd drawn, as well as the plan. "It's not safe," she admitted. "Everything about being here is unsafe now."

(It's all good, Soul. I understand.) Kellan took a few steps towards her, still concerned. Had he scared her by running up on her? He hadn't meant to. "Are you okay?" he asked again, seeing how negatively she was reacting. "Here, why don't we go find a place to sit down? You can rest and try to catch your breath." He wanted to place a hand on her shoulder to lead her back the way he had come, back towards the dorms where he knew there were some benches she could sit on, but he didn't know if that would make her condition worse. So he held back from doing so, and settled on waiting for her answer. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Scarlet was walking home from the park, having just finished a game of soccer with her friends. She was dressed in a simple sky blue tank, black sports shorts, and her sneakers, her red hair pulled back into a pony tail. She was ready to get home and relax for a while. Yet as she walked, she spotted a coffee shop on the corner of the street. She had forgotten her water bottle at home, so she hadn't had anything to quench her thirst after the game. Though the girl was not really dressed to stop in anywhere, her need for a drink won out. So, she walked into the coffee shop anyway, getting in line to order. ~* Winter stared out the window of his social worker's car. He watched as the city he grew up in sped by in a blur, taking him to his new prison living arrangement. The boy wasn't excited about this plan. In fact, he had been protesting this judgement for the past three days. He had enough of these so called foster systems. All he wanted was to be left alone. "Are you even listening to me, Jace?" Tim, his social worker, asked, casting a quick glance at the boy. For the past five minutes, the man had been giving the boy a lecture on how to behave at his new "house". Winter had heard it so many times, he didn't bother paying attention to it now. "What do you think?" he muttered in answer, not moving his gaze from the window. Tim sighed, but said no more. He knew by now it was a lost cause trying to get the boy to listen. It didn't matter anyway, since he could see the house Jace would be staying at coming into view. A faint, small smile graced Sage's lips in spite of the situation when she detected the evident concern in his tone, he must be a sweet person, to so kindly deal with her while she acted so outrageously. Listening to his suggestion she gave a slight nod of her head in agreement, her hand finally returning to her side, though slowly with her reluctance. She could feel her control returning and had about calmed herself completely, but she still couldn't bring herself to look at his face, and instead settled her gaze on his chest, an easy feat with her small stature. "I'll be okay, thank you for your concern." Luckily this time she wasn't lying, because the phrase 'I'll be okay' had become the ultimate lie for her after his death. "I-I'll just sit right here." She quickly added in a murmur, gesturing to a little open clearing on the ground right next to the trail, big enough for four people to casually chill. She did just as she said as soon as the words were out of her mouth, crisscrossing her legs which were cladded with PJ sweats, not the most attractive thing but then again, she'd planned for a walk, not a date.

"Thank you," Danir repeated. "Now, we've all had a long day. I suggest we leave for now and get washed up. I'm sure dinner will be ready soon." The elf cast a look to Chastmere, offering the man a chance for him to give the finale orders. It was his castle after all. Danir was just a guest.
"I already promised we weren't splitting up again," Thayer said. She let the marble drop to her hand as she sat up, staring her sister in the eye. "Something doesn't feel right to me either, but I can't just sit by while everyone else is trying to solve it. I will help, but I promise I won't recklessly put myself in danger like I did today."

Kellan nodded, glad that her words weren't stuttered as badly as before. She seemed to be getting better, but he couldn't bring himself to just leave. So he sat down on the ground as while, sitting opposite of the girl. He wasn't exactly date worthy either with his mesh shorts and his sweaty tank top and hair.
"Do you need anything to drink? I have some water you can have," he offered, holding out his water bottle he always brought with him.

Chastmere didn't seem to have much else to add. He simply reiterated the suggestion as a command, shooting Danir a grateful glance as everyone dispersed. Before the elf could leave, though, the baron put a hand on his shoulder. "Redmont is already in your debt," he said softly. "Without your magic, I suspect this would be a much longer investigation. But there are going to be some obstacles. My staff does not begrudge your presence, but some of the town does. If I can ease your passage anywhere at all, please tell me." On that note, he gave a shallow bow and left.
Meira sighed in relief and let herself fall back against the mattress. The covers were cool and silky to the touch, and a flash of guilt ran through her as she realized she hadn't washed since touching the dead man. She was so tired already, though. The day had contained too much excitement for her by far. "I feel like we're going to be here forever," she mumbled.

I honestly couldn't forgive myself if I passed you by and you were hurt. No sir, that would haunt me for the rest of my life." He ended this with a firm nod. "Please, ma'am, let me at least walk you home?" --- Various curses came to Kit's mind, but he gritted his teeth and managed not to say any. Sure, maybe--maybe--the girl actually had some sort of delusion that she could help, but that didn't mean he wanted it. Or all the questions it would inevitably raise. He was too fuzzy to think of a coherent excuse for all the blood. "It's just a scratch," he found himself saying. His words sounded slurred. Were they slurred? He held his head in one hand and willed it to clear.

Dustin relaxed in the coffeeshop, setting down the plastic cup and letting out a soft sigh of contentment. It was a nice summer day, and the 19 year old was relishing every day he was away from college classes and messy roommates. He brushed his hair out of his eyes as he looked about the coffee shop. He came here often in the summer, so he knew most of the regulars. Which was why when an unfamiliar figure broke the sea of faces, he looked twice. Almost immediately, he was taken in by the girl and he let out a low whistle. "Who's this?" He murmured under his breath, intrigued. - The home Winter was being sent to was a bit out of the way, in a somewhat rural but still modern community. It was still certainly a step from the big city. The family was a bit new to the whole foster idea, but was willing to give the boy a try after hearing about his situation. When the house came into view, it was revealed to be a pretty large white two-story farmhouse-esque building. His new family was waiting outside to greet him, having heard that he would be arriving soon. Both parents had warm, welcoming smiles on their faces while their teenage daughter, who looked to be around 15 or 16, looked more curious than anything.

"I appreciate your cooperation in letting me help," was all Danir had time to say as the Baron left. Danir hesitated in following, casting a quick glance back at the body. Under his breath, the elf cast a simple ward that would protect the man from being messed with, just in case someone might try to come and tamper with him. It was a precaution he felt like he needed to take, especially when the life of his family was at stake with this investigation. Once the spell was cast, he turned and left the room as well.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Haley studied the man in front of her. He appeared to be her age, if not a few years older, so it was a bit strange having him call her "ma'am." His words didn't ease the worry in her stomach, but she saw that there was no way she was going to get him to leave. "I-if you insist, fine. My house is just right up the street," she said, holding onto her phone a bit tighter in case she needed it.
~*
"A scratch?" Dakota asked. "A scratch from what? A bear?" She didn't believe the boy when he spoke, and she knelt down beside him. "Hold on, let me call the ambulance."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Scarlet waited her turn in line, and after a few minutes, she walked over to the counter. She ordered a water and a muffin, partly because she had skipped lunch and partly because she felt bad for only buying a water. When she was done, she paid and stepped aside to let the next person have their turn. Waiting for her food, she stood at the edge of the counter, not wanting to find a table only to have to stand up once more.
~*
Winter spotted the family as soon as Tim pulled into their driveway. Already the look of them made him groan internally. They were another family with fake smiles and high hopes that he would crush soon enough. His scowl darkened as he stared at them. Tim parked the car outside the house and shut the car off. Taking his keys with him, he got out of the car and walked over to the family. "Mr. and Mrs. Brookhart," he greeted, smiling and offering his hand out to the couple when he was close enough, "it's good to see you again." He had met them once before to look over the house, just to make sure it would be a suitable place for Jace to stay. Of course, there were no problems with the property, so the move for the boy had been an easy process.

(Sure thing!)
The next morning, Thayer allowed herself to sleep in. On any other day, the young elf would have woken around sunrise to explore the forest around their village. Now, however, she had no forest to enjoy the silence of morning in. So she just stayed asleep. It was maybe two hours after sunrise when she finally blinked her eyes open.

Meira, on the other hand, hardly slept at all. Filled with nervous energy, she woke before sunrise and tried to dismiss the tension with a hot bath. That only gave her time to dwell on what had happened the day before, though, and by the time she finished, she was more anxious than before. No doubt, Danir probably would be on his way with the baron to speak to the weapons masters listed the night before, and until he returned, there would not be quite a lot to do.
She spent about an hour lying in her bed, glowering at the ceiling and trying to go back to sleep. It didn't work.

I'd hate to hurt you, but I'm not exactly against it." --- "I don't know," Kit forced out. He hoped it hadn't been a bear, anyway. "Don't...don't...no ambulance." He knew perfectly well where that would go--bills he couldn't pay, questions he couldn't answer. He'd been avoiding hospitals for too long to stop now.

James glanced at his phone to check the time. "6:23," he answered.

When she finally woke up properly, Thayer dragged herself out of bed. She changed into a clean tunic and pants. She knew today would be a hectic day, so she didn't bother dressing in anything fancy. Once she had brushed her hair and made herself look presentable, she left her room to go to her sister's.
"Mei, you up?" She called, knocking on the door of her room.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The moment she felt the gun against her back, Haley panicked. She couldn't stop herself from trying to run from the boy, even if it wasn't the smartest idea. It was more of a reflex action then a well thought out one.
~*
"Well you can't just stay here," Dakota said. "I'd take you to the hospital myself, but my stupid tire is flat." She thought for a moment, trying to think of what to do. "Let me call my dad. He can come pick us up and get you help."

Dakota quickly dialed her father's number. She had no idea how she was going to explain the bleeding boy, but when her father answered his phone, she somehow managed to explain what was going on. I have some water you can have," he offered, holding out his water bottle he always brought with him. Sage clenched her fingers around the frayed edge of the bottom of her sweatshirt when Kellan settled down opposite of her, she hadn't expected him too, not at all. She'd immediately assumed he'd be on his way, quick to free himself of her crazy reaction to his appearance. But no, he stayed as if he was making sure she was alright. Sage wasn't quite sure how she felt about that, a big part of her was nervous and she focused on fiddling with the material of her sweatshirt, her nimble fingers twisting and tugging at the soft cloth. That big part of her simply wished he'd go away, thus lessening the risk of another panic attack, but a small, more meaningful part of her appreciated his concern.
When he offered her his water bottle, she gratefully accepted with a quiet “Thank you.” and reached out to grasp it, but still refused to raise her gaze higher than his chest. Somehow unscrewing the cap with her hands whose tremors were still dying down, she took a quick swig, relishing the cool refreshing water that spilled down her anxious - parched throat. Quickly returning the little lid, she handed it back to him and resumed her position that kept a few feet distance between them. “You must be new around here, huh?” She inquired, mostly to break the heavy silence that had fallen over them, but if she was honest with herself, she was actually a bit curious. She'd never seen him around before, and it was a small town, so not having caught a glimpse of him previously would have been impossible if he'd lived here long.
