. Cresseida shook her head with a smile. "No, dear, I'm quite alright. You just enjoy the party. When it comes time to clean up, I have three wonderful children to recruit to the task."
Seth flinched slightly. "Uh, actually..." He hung his head in a dramatic show of shame. "You'll only have two. I need to leave soon for a mission. That's... kinda why I came over here. To say goodbye and... head... out." His words trailed off at the end when he caught sight of the expression on his mother's face.
She was looking up at him, hands on her hips, with a look that was indignation, anger, annoyance, exasperation, and worry, all rolled into one. "Are you didn't tell me this sooner because...?"
Seth shrugged one shoulder. "Because... I'm telling you now?"
The hand that flashed out to slap his arm wasn't unexpected — in fact, he'd been waiting for it — but no amount of preparation or skill on his part was enough to dodge a well-deserved smack from his mother.
He flinched and rubbed his arm where the hit had landed. "Ow."
"Don't 'ow' me," Cresseida snapped. "You should have told me you have a mission the minute you got here."
"And ruin your day?" Seth shook his head. "No, Mom, I wasn't about to do that to you. It's bad enough the rest of your day is going to be spent worry needlessly."
Cresseida crossed her arms. "A mother's worry is never needless." There was a pause, then she asked hesitantly, "Is it going to be dangerous?"
Seth was quiet for a time. He sighed. "Depends of your definition of dangerous, I guess."

. At his evasive response, Cresseida closed her eyes and pulled in a deep, steadying breath. Only she didn't seem that much steadier when her eyes opened again. "I don't want to know the details, do I?" she asked in a quiet voice.
Seth's shoulders slumped, just a little. "No," he replied in the same quiet tone. "No, you don't."
Cresseida nodded and turned to the table to needlessly adjust more dishes.
Seth watched her, his expression equal parts frustrated and sad. He hesitated, wavered for an endless minute, then stepped closer to his mother.
"Mom," he said. "You know I do this for a living, right? Its... my job. And I'm good at it." His flinch as he said that was barely perceptible. He continued. "Plus, I've got Stel watching my back. I'll be fine."
She turned and looked up at him. "Can you promise that?"
Seth hesitated. Looked away, then back. "Possibly. Am I promising I'll be fine, or that I won't get hurt at all?"
Cresseida sighed and bowed her head, but the gesture was more exasperated than upset. Marginally.

Anya could tell Cresseida was worried about him. Any mother would be worried when the child they raised was going off on some unknown mission to who knows where. Her mother had fussed over her for weeks before she finally left to come to the Circle. Seth, however, was doing a very poor job in trying to ease those worries. She nudged him with her elbow as discreetly as she could, giving the man a "cut it out" sort of look. His way of talking might work in some situations, but not in this one. Right now, the best thing for him to do, in her opinion that is, was to just speak plainly to Cresseida. She would have told him as much, but she didn't want it to look as if she was telling him what to say or she was forcing him to say anything at all. That would never be the case being that Seth was far to stubborn to let anyone dictate what he should say or do, it would still be better if he promised his safety in the most sincere way possible.

LMAO. He would do it, too. Cheeky bugger. xD Realization dawned. He nodded and turned back to his mother. Shed been standing there patiently, pretending she couldn't see the silent exchange between Seth and Anya. She did a good job hiding her smile, but she couldn't quite disguise the small spark of amusement in her eyes.
"No matter what happens, Mom, I promise I'll be careful." Careful wasn't often something he practiced while in the heat of a mission, but just this one time he figured he could give it a go.
Cresseida sighed, but Seth was grateful to see the amusement didn't fade. "I guess that's the best I'm gonna get out of you."
"Uh..."
She snickered, making Seth's brows shoot up in surprise, and patted his cheek. "How did I end up with such a smartass?"
Seth wasn't sure how to answer that either. He shrugged.
Cresseida smirked. "I guess it's a good thing you have such a thick skull." She bonked him on the side of his head lightly. "Makes breaking it harder."
Seth rolled his eyes. "Thanks, Mom."

Aye. xD With that unpleasantness out of the way, Cresseida turned back to the table, waving Seth off. "Go find your siblings and tell them goodbye before you go. You know you'll never hear the end of it from Cami if you don't."
Seth sighed. "Yeah, I know." He glanced over his shoulder to where he'd last seen his sister and Cal. They were still there, but the people around them had changed. Seth also noticed the crowd had started to thin. Not a lot, but enough for him to notice. At least he wouldn't be the first to ditch the party.
Before heading out to say his goodbyes to his sister — and Cal, by default — Seth turned back to Cresseida. He leaned over and placed a quick kiss on her cheek. "See ya, Mom. I'll come by again as soon as I can so you can se for yourself I survived."
"See that you do." Cresseida narrowed her eyes at him, but it did nothing to hide her love and affection. She couldn't help it. It was a rare thing indeed for Seth to display affection so publicly.
Seth grinned cheekily. "I promise," he replied. And with a little salute, he started toward his sister.
Cresseida caught Anya's hand before the younger girl could follow and pulled her into a hug. "Thank you," she whispered. Whether Anya believed it or not, Cresseida knew the only reason Seth was at the party was because of Anya.

"Please, take a seat," Emma told her as they reached the kitchen and motioned to the plate of food already waiting for her.
When he heard the women approaching, Matthias looked up from where he was preparing two more plates for himself and his wife. "Good morning, Alexa. I hope you've slept well," he greeted.
~*
Charles smiled at the offer. "I'd say that would be delightful," he told her. Any excuse to stay with her a while longer, he would take. But would it be wise? He needed to go. The longer he stayed, the more he could feel his resolve crumbling. It wasn't fair to her, but he just didn't want to leave her. However, if he waited any longer, she might only hate him more. "Before we go, can I, uh, talk with you for a moment?" Alexa followed the woman out to the kitchen and Rocky roamed around sniffing everything happily his tail wagging fast. She looked up to Matthias as she was sitting down where Emma told her to sit and answered, "very well, thank you. How is Dallas doing?" --- Amelia paused, by the sound of his voice, she wasn't quite sure where this was going but it didn't sound so good. What was wrong? She hadn't offended him, had she? She knew she made fun of noble's a fair amount at times but that was all in good humor and just to mess with him. Or was there something else wrong? She shrugged her worries away as she turned to Casper with a smile and asked, "sure, what's up?"

"Sleeping," Matthias replied. While he gave a small chuckle, there was still an echo of the worry from last night. "Stitch patched him up as best as he could, and that's usually pretty good. He'll be fine, I'm sure." As he said this, Emma put a bowl of food and water on the floor for Rocky to have if he was interested.
~*
"I, um, well," Charles started, trying to gather the words he needed, but even they seem to be eluding him. "Amelia, I've had so much fun spending time with you as I have. You don't know how much it has meant to me and how I treasure it so. Even if it started out as a ruse, it's almost become so natural to introduce you as the woman I'm courting." This wasn't how he should be stating it. This sounded like a love confession more than a goodbye, and he was treading ever more into dangerous territory.

"He should be," Alexa agreed, "it didn't look to be too bad of a scratch." She thought it was only bad enough to need stitches to leave a smaller scar. She didn't know how bad or good the wound actually was since she couldn't see it that well last night. Rocky, at the sight and smell of food, instantly padded over to the bowls left out for him. He gave it a good sniff before eating.
---
At first, Amelia thought the worst was coming to pass, that he was giving this up. As he continued, however, her heart started to lighten. Was he feeling the same way about her as she did about him? She knew she shouldn't but she couldn't help the feelings that she had developed for him. She nodded her head as she agreed with him, "it has."

"Maybe this will teach him to stop running in the middle of the night like a crazy person," Emma said, though she knew when Dallas did what he did. The boy had too much restless energy, and the rest of the Pack didn't have the time or energy to match to follow him around everywhere.
~*
Charles swallowed as she thought of what to say next. "We also never really planned on what would happen if we ever wanted the ruse to stop, or if you mother started demanding when our actual proposal was going to be." Or when I am forced to marry another and stop the whole affair altogether. "Amelia, you're such an amazing woman, and you've taught me so much. I don't want to think about something to change that. I don't know what I'd do."
(It looks fine to me!)
Anya, unlike her mentor, chose to wait for the results of her test by sitting, leaning against the exterior of the council chamber. To her, she felt like things could have gone better. She had been incredibly nervous, and she was sure it had affected her performance. How badly it had affected it, though, was what they were waiting on. "Does it usually take this long?" the young woman asked, growing more worried by the minute. The longer it took, was it a good or bad sign?

I don't know what I'd do." Alexa laughed at that, "yeah, running at night is probably not the best idea." It was an easy way to get lost, even if you knew where you were, and you could easily not see something with poor eyesight and all in the dark and either get trapped or trip over something that gives you a bad wound. What if you needed help but it was so dark people wouldn't be able to find you? It wasn't a good idea to run at night. Chances of getting hurt where extremely high. "So, why doesn't he just run before dark or right after the sun comes up?" She thought that was reasonable. --- At this point, Amelia was getting a little lost. What was he trying to do? Was he trying to break things off or propose to court for real? It sounded like it could go either way at this point. "Well, what do you want to do?" She hoped for an answer that probably wasn't possible but it was the best she got.

"We've asked him this, but he's a night owl," Matthias replied. "Claims that's the best time to clear his head. Whatever the reason, he does it, but he normally doesn't head out that far. There's quiet a few things he's going to have to explain when he wakes."
~*
That was a dangerous question. Charles knew exactly want he wanted to do. However, what he wanted and what his mother and the rest of the nobility wanted didn't match. Here was the time to come clean to her, tell her that he was already promised to someone else. He stared into her eyes as he tried to find the courage needed, yet all he found was the need to pull her closer into his arms. Before he knew it, that's exactly what he had done. Moving slow so he wouldn't startle her and give her time to react, the king wrapped one arm around the woman's waist and drew her near. "What I want to do is to go ahead and beg your forgiveness," he muttered before leaning in and gently kissing her. He wanted forgiveness for both kissing her so unexpectedly and without permission, as well as for possibly dragging her further into the mess that revolved around him. This was the last thing he should have done, but if this was to be the last time he saw her, he couldn't leave without knowing what it felt like to express his love to someone he had had the freedom to choose and grow close to on his own accord.

"Maybe he had a good reason?" Alexa softly said in defense of Dallas. Someone should stick up for him since he wasn't here to defend himself. And she knew her excuse for the stranger was lame but she felt the need to do it for some reason.
---
Amelia was started when he pulled her into his arms but she wasn't going to protest, she quite liked it. However, when he continued she started to say, "wha-" before being cut off by his lips. Her heart went wild, he was kissing her! Oh how she had dreamed of this even though she knew she should not dare. She did not try to stop him, instead, she leaned further into him and drew one hand up to his shoulder and the other behind his back. This may have been one of the best moments of her life.

Matthias had to smile at her statement. "Don't worry, many of us here have odd habits and preferences. No one's blaming Dallas for his need to run in the middle of the night. If we did, we would have stopped him long ago," he assured her. "But he's also the youngest, so we have to give him a hard time for scarring us all like he did."
~*
Charles felt an ache in his chest that was both wonderful and retched at the same time. He had managed to find a woman who cared for him, as a person, rather than his stature. Yet he had to have made such a discovery at the time when he had to leave her. Now he couldn't just tell her of his engagement to someone else. He didn't want to. This was such a blessed moment, and he wanted nothing to ruin it. Slowly, he pulled away, looking down into Amelia's eyes, those eyes that had held him captive for the longest time now.
